Dear Fellow OA Member:
Together We Can...
The day I walked through the doors of Overeaters Anonymous more than 26 years ago, I felt great comfort in OA Founder Rozanne's words, "... together we can do what we could never do alone." There I was -- home at last with fellow compulsive overeaters who told me I didn't have to do this alone, in fact they would help me. That has proven true many times over: when I developed (and might I add, redeveloped) an individual food plan; when I did and continue to do my written step work; and even when I wasn't able to lead that meeting I signed up for and someone else stepped in. I don't do any of this alone.
In that spirit, as well as Tradition 1 and its spiritual principle of unity, Libby H. and I have volunteered to work together as a team to produce the monthly newsletter. Not wanting this important means of communication to cease, both of us threw our hats into the ring when Kara M. announced she was graciously moving on. Thank you Kara, for the personal touches and professionalism you gave the newsletter for a year and a half. You will be missed in this role.
In December, Libby and I met to discuss our vision for the monthly newsletter. We didn't know each other, but it quickly became apparent we were on the same page when we shared our thoughts with each other. In our professional lives, we are both involved in marketing. As for program, I am a relapse survivor and Libby has been in OA a little less than a year. Hopefully, our experiences, old and new, will be of benefit to this service. We trust that with God as our editor-in-chief, the Ocean & Bay newsletter will continue to be a valuable service to Ocean & Bay Intergroup members and beyond. Also, we hope you like the new name -- "Waves of Hope."
One more thing -- "together" includes you! We need your contributions, announcements, and feedback, which you can send to [email protected]. After all, "I put my hand in yours, and together we can do what we could never do alone."
Happy New Years One Day At A Time!
My hand in yours,
Leslie A., Co-editor

Q: WHAT IS CROSS TALK?
Are all responses and comments to another person at a meeting cross talk? Is thanking someone for something he or she shared cross talk? Or is it cross talk only if the comments are negative?
A:
OA literature does not specifically define cross talk. The Suggested Meeting Format states: "As you share your experience and strength in OA, please also share your hope. Please confine your sharing to your experience with the disease of compulsive eating, the solution offered by OA and your own recovery from the disease, rather than just the events of the day or week. If you are having difficulties, share how you use the program to deal with them. If you need to talk more about your difficulties and seek solutions, we suggest you speak to your sponsor and other members after the meeting." OA World Service

Newcomer Corner
As I write this, I am still amazed and ever so grateful that I found such an incredible fellowship that understands and shares the same struggles as I do and promotes a sense of unity, honesty and acceptance.
About nine months ago, I learned about OA through a friend who wanted to check it out and didn't want to go alone. So, I went to support her not knowing that it was I who needed you the most. That first night, I instantly knew I was exactly where I was supposed to be. I cried tears of joy because for the first time in my life, I felt no judgement, but instead accepted and heard. My HP led me to all of you, to this program, to this new freedom.
I still consider myself a newcomer, so I thought it would be a good idea to give three monthly tips for the newcomer who might feel a little apprehensive at first.
TIP 1: HAVE AN OPEN MIND
When I first came to OA, I had some doubts and fears about it all. "Why are there prayers? Do I have to speak? I hate talking about myself..." But, I just I told myself to have an open mind, listen, and give it a shot.
TIP 2: ASK QUESTIONS
It was somewhat overwhelming trying to learn about all the literature, tools, promises, steps, and everything else in my early days. I had so many questions, but fortunately I never felt judged when I asked them. I tell other newcomers like me not to be afraid to ask anything that comes to mind.
TIP 3: TAKE NUMBERS
I thank all the individuals that reached out that first meeting to welcome me and offer to connect over the telephone to ease any concerns I had about the program and to share their experiences. They showed me genuine friendship and concern, and asked nothing in return. I told myself if this is what OA is, I want to be a part of it.
Sincerely Grateful,
Libby H., Co-editor

UPCOMING ISSUES...
- Look for a new mobile-friendly format
- More newcomer tips and twelve step within suggestions
- How to navigate the World Service Convention
- Spotlight on program in Rhode Island and SE Mass
Please note that every effort has been made to adhere to OA's policy for newsletter publications. However, opinions and experiences expressed within are those of the individual writer and not OA as a whole. We welcome your experience, too!
