We're issuing our Weekly Resource earlier than usual this week to make sure you are aware of two events of interest. The first is the premier of "The Price of Silence: The Forgotten Story of New Jersey's Enslaved People," which airs on NJ PBS on June 22. This documentary on New Jersey's history of enslavement features Sankofa Collaborative partners Dr. Linda Caldwell Epps, Elaine Buck, and Beverly Mills. We've included a link to the trailer. On July 19 at 6:30 p.m., Ridgeley Hutchinson, CEO of Truehart Productions, will give a Zoom talk about the film for another Sankofa Collaborative partner, the 1719 William Trent House Museum. The second is "Beneath the Floorboards: Whispers of the Enslaved at Marlpit Hall," a June 25 event celebrating an exhibition that tells the stories of the enslaved African Americans who once resided at Marlpit Hall. This event will expand upon the exhibition’s narrative exploring the lives and experiences of enslaved people in Monmouth County and New Jersey at large, with curator-led tours of the exhibit, a panel of speakers, and cultural programming. The exhibition features sewing and quilting by local sewing and quilting collectives. Light refreshments will be provided.

Sankofa, a word from the Twi language of Ghana, translates to "go back and get it." It is often depicted by a bird with its body facing forward and its head turned back, holding a precious egg. This and other Sankofa symbols remind us of the importance of learning from the past. |
