Current SSPC 135 Happenings from
SSPC 135 Chair
Coleman Brumley
ANSI/ASHRAE 135.1-2023 – Method of Test for Conformance to BACnet was released for publication and is now available for order from the ASHRAE bookstore.
This publication is a joint effort between the ASHRAE SSPC 135 and the BACnet International BACnet Testing Laboratory Working Group (BTL-WG).
Per bacnetinternational.org, the BTL-WG “is responsible for the technical aspects of the of BACnet International’s testing and listing activities, the central goal of which is the improve BACnet interoperability between building automation products.” Historically, part of this responsibility has been the creation of so called “BTL Specified Tests”, which are either newly created test concepts and steps or modified tests from the 135.1 standard. This is done to expedite the testing of devices that are introduced to the testing labs that implement functionality that does not yet have tests available. Or, on the other hand, an implementation undergoes testing that uncovers a deficiency in an existing test.
This approach has the benefit of speed. A focused group of technical experts can turn around modifications – often in days or weeks. The SSPC is much slower, and the turnaround is often months.
However, an unfortunate side effect of this approach is that, unless properly maintained, it can lead to separation from standardized tests. This can lead to perception of two standards, one maintained by the SSPC (135.1) and another maintained by BACnet International (BTL-WG Specified Tests, specifically Test Package 23.2).
I’m happy to say that, as of the publication of Addendum 135.1-2019s, this situation is resolved. This addendum integrates the changes created by the BTL-WG into the published standard. Thus, the publication of ANSI/ASHRAE 135.1-2023 also includes these changes.

Tips for a Successful BTL Testing Experience
Understand the importance of pre-testing your BACnet products before the testing process.
Many manufacturers and end-users are aware of the numerous benefits the BACnet Testing Laboratories (BTL) Testing and Certification programs offers. Products that are BTL Certified provide users with the confidence that a product has passed the industry standard BACnet conformance tests conducted by a Recognized BACnet Testing Organization (RBTO). The advantages of BTL Certification can include lower integration cost, less integration risk, improved product quality and performance, and greater buyer confidence and opportunity to bid. Currently, there are over 1,300 BTL Listed products that have successfully completed testing and received a BTL certification. These products can be found in the online BTL Listing of Test Products Database: https://www.bacnetinternational.net/btl/
Before a BACnet product can successfully receive BTL Certification and gain the right to use the BTL Mark, it has to pass compliance testing against the appropriate test package developed by the BTL Working Group. While getting a product tested is a worthwhile investment for manufacturers, time and cost are certainly factors that must be taken under consideration.
BTL Testing is designated for compliance rather than development. When development errors are discovered during testing, the process can be delayed, resulting in the device spending additional costly hours in the RBTOs lab. To potentially save time and money during testing, BTL strongly encourages manufacturers to take advantage of the wide-range of pre-testing tools that focus on the development of BACnet products. “It has been found that when the manufacturer performs pre-testing prior to submitting their device for BTL Testing, the issues that are found are limited, thus saving testing cost and expediting testing time,” states Rich Ruel, Testing Services Manager for the BTL Lab. Additionally, the BTL Test Package, used by all RBTOs for BTL Testing, is available to developers for their own internal pre-testing.
“Besides saving time and money during conformance testing, manufacturers are required to extensively pre-test their products prior to submission to an RBTO. The RBTO is not a quality assurance lab. Products need to be ready for market when submitted,” states Emily Hayes, BTL Manager.
A list of third-party pre-testing tools can be found at btl.org/pre-testing-tools. The types of pre-testing tools include Test Frameworks, BACnet Client Software, BACnet Protocol Analyzers, BACnet Device Simulators, General Tools, Reference BACnet Routers and Reference BACnet MS/TP Masters. These lists are provided as a convenience only. They represent a sampling of available resources and are not intended to be complete. No recommendation, endorsement or any form of warranty is implied or provided by BTL or BACnet International for any of the items in these lists.

Automated Logic Launches Powerful New Integration and Sensing Solutions
CHICAGO, Jan. 22, 2023 — Automated Logic introduced its latest innovation in integration and sensing solutions for the WebCTRL® building automation system during AHR Expo® in Chicago. These new solutions offer building operators enhanced options for integrating building systems and sensing environmental conditions, helping improve operational efficiencies and the occupant experience. Automated Logic, a leading provider of innovative building management solutions, is a part of Carrier Global Corporation (NYSE: CARR), global leader in intelligent climate and energy solutions.
“Our new solutions reinforce our commitment to helping customers operate their buildings more efficiently while protecting the health of those inside,” said Axel Reichert, President, Automated Logic. “They also help operators digitally enable their operations for a more sustainable future.”
The latest integration solutions are part of Automated Logic’s OptiFlex™ line of building controls built on the sophisticated fifth generation (Gen5) firmware platform, which unlocks more flexibility, scalability and security. With the new firmware, OptiFlex hardware integrators are more modular, while supporting Automated Logic’s commitment to open standards. OptiFlex integrators are also fully programmable, provide stand-alone routing capabilities between BACnet®/IP, BACnet Ethernet, BACnet/ARCNET and BACnet MS/TP networks, and offer native support for BACnet/IPv6 and BACnet /SC. They also help customers on their digital transformation journey by providing:
- Remote, graphical diagnostics capabilities that display the controller’s CPU and memory usage;
- Staged download process that allows new controller firmware to be applied while controller is still operating and when the operator chooses;
- Pluggable protocols that can be installed on the fly, including BACnet, Modbus®, N2 Open, SNMP™ and KNX®, allowing the WebCTRL system to be the single pane of glass for managing these building systems;
- Advanced, flexible point packs that allow operators to install the number of integration points needed today while easily adding more points in the future; and
- Innovative control program engine that allows operators to prioritize the order that control programs run, while defining execution rates.
Automated Logic’s new ZS2 multi-IAQ room sensors connect via the Rnet port on OptiFlex controllers, minimizing wiring and eliminating the need to use the controller’s physical I/O to manage the sensor. They measure room temperature, relative humidity, motion, carbon dioxide, volatile organic compounds and particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and smaller.
Multiple studies1 suggest that indoor environments can impact the health and decision-making performance of building occupants. These sensors help building operators keep their building environments within healthy thresholds. They are available in Standard and Plus models to address specific ventilation strategies and control requirements.
