LSPA

Another snowstorm is predicted Tuesday into Wednesday and will be followed by rain, increasing the likelihood of flooding, erosion and washouts on roads. To minimize these issues please remember to keep storm drains and pipes on your property free of debris (leaves, sticks, snow piles, etc..).

Winter rains can cause even more damage than summer rains because frozen soils are unable to soak up rainwater and plants are absorbing less water from the ground, leading to more runoff. Aging infrastructure and undersized culverts have also exacerbated the impacts of these storms.

Stormwater runoff can erode soils and carry nutrients and pollutants that harm water quality and can lead to cyanobacteria blooms. Have you noticed problems with stormwater on your property? LSPA offers free advice to landowners through our Watershed Wise program.

What if you'd made a different choice? What if you'd said the thing that popped into your head just after you walked away? Nick Payne’s Olivier Award-winning modern romance Constellations follows Roland, a beekeeper, and Marianne, a scientist, from their first meeting through a multitude of possible futures, from marriage to heartbreak, through sickness and health, and back again, in a play that reveals the vast universe of possibilities in our lives.

Winter Films at the HOP (per Artful)

The Hop’s film series, titled “It’s Complicated,” is a wide-ranging feast to nourish your soul through January and February. It begins on January 5 with Priscilla, a Sofia Coppola film about the young bride of Elvis Presley, followed quickly by Taylor Swift/The Eras Tour (self-explanatory). There are the recent and current heavy hitters like Oppenheimer, the award-winning Killers of the Flower Moon, the musical version of The Color Purple, the some-like-it-some-don’t Poor Things with Emma Stone, described as a “feminist twist in the Frankenstein story.” And a biographical take, Rustin, about Bayard Rustin, the “unsung civil rights firebrand.”

Love to see some old classics in the mix: Vertigo and The Philadelphia Story.

Perhaps one of the most gorgeously filmed movies about art, eroticism, love, heartbreak: Portrait of a Lady on Fire.

Of course this isn’t even close to a complete list. For that, with dates and times, click here. Happy viewing, and the happiest of new years. I wish you light.

How to Self-Publish Your Book. This fun presentation will briefly work through the checklist of items and the associated costs before your creative plot, dazzling photographs, delicious recipes, or expository masterpiece can find its way to a bookstore shelf or a stranger’s coffee table. Writing a book is generally easier and more enjoyable than self-publishing the manuscript. Holding that final product in your hands and noting the first sale is wonderfully gratifying and well worth the effort. Seating is limited, please make a reservation by emailing info@cfanh.org.

RESOLUTION FOR 2024

Remember that New Year’s resolution, earnestly made, but soon forgotten?

Perhaps the better pledge would be: “Instead of a resolution to make big changes… how about a focus on the beauty of the everyday.”  Simon Pearce
