February 9, 2023
Greetings Tiger Students and Families,
Second semester is off to a successful start. All students are engaged in their classes and excited for the new and continued learning that will occur in their classes, and our teachers are excited to see all of their students continue to show growth and mastery of the content. We are currently working with our current ninth through eleventh graders on their registration for the 23-24 school year. Our assistant principal, Mrs. Meyer, will also work with our feeder middle school and other future students on the registration process this week and into next week if needed. If you have any questions regarding your student’s registration information or status, please contact Mrs. Meyer. She is a rock star and always happy to help.
As we get the second half of the year up and running, there are several practices and expectations that we revisit with students. We use our Advisory program, which occurs every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, as our method to revisit and reteach students our schoolwide behavior and academic expectations. Our Student Services Team will include this information within our newsletter. The safety and security of every student and staff member is my top priority, and I take this responsibility very seriously.
Please be sure to read all parts of our newsletter, so you do not miss out on any important information that is provided. We want to showcase the many amazing things that are taking place at LC and how students and families can take part in these activities and opportunities. Therefore, if you have any question or concerns, please email me at ivanc@spokaneschools.org or call me at (509) 354-6888.
Thanks for your partnership,
Mr. Ivan Corley
Principal

Welcome to Semester 2 at LC. The start of the semester is a time to reset or refresh your goals and expectations for the remainder of the school year. For Seniors it may be something as simple as finishing your high school career strong, attending classes, and joining that activity you may have avoided in the past (it is never too late to get involved). For Juniors it may be the anticipation and planning for a phenomenal last year rapidly approaching. For Sophomores and Freshman, it may be looking towards building a more positive LC or joining an activity or club now that you have the hang of being a high schooler.
Connection is an important component to academic success and a positive high school experience. If you are struggling academically and don’t feel you have time to join an extracurricular program, the Homework Center is available for all students seeking additional academic support or as structured time to complete work before leaving school. Plus, we have snacks. 😉
Semester Reset/Refresh Reminders:
-
10s: Students may not be out in the hallways the first 10 minutes of class OR the last 10 minutes of class, please plan accordingly.
-
Cell Phones: Currently our cell phone policy is a per classroom policy. That means if your teacher doesn’t allow cell phones to be out...PUT IT AWAY. Please adhere to your teacher’s classroom policy.
-
STUDENT IDs/ENTRY POINTS: Any student arriving after the start of the school day (8:00 AM) will be required to present their student ID upon arrival to enter the school. ID replacements can be obtained in the student office (there may be a charge applied). TWO Points of Entry ONLY: the main front entrance and the commons entrance (ADA compliant entrance) both located on 4th Ave. DO NOT OPEN DOORS FOR ANYONE to include your friends or individuals you know are students. Rather direct them to one of the approved entrances. All visitors MUST report to the public office to check in and obtain a pass.
-
SAFETY PROCEDURES: this week we reviewed a lesson plan on lockdowns and gave students the opportunity to practice on Thursday. To review:
-
GET OUT -get to a safe location ONLY if you are safely able to.
-
HIDE OUT- SILENCE is key. Get behind a locked door. Stay silent not quiet (only text if needed). Do not group together, spread out and hide.
-
TAKE OUT- ONLY as a last resort, for example, throw objects, and cause as much distraction and disorientation as possible.
-
Lewis and Clark High School Emergency Drills Student Instructions - YouTube
-
Vape Detectors ONLINE AND FUNCTIONING: We would like to remind students of behavioral expectations in the restroom. Vape detectors are connected to our camera system. Should a detector be activated, the camera system will record anyone leaving the restroom after the activation. Students found during activation of an alarm or on video are subjected to a search. Students found with prohibited items will undergo disciplinary measures and may be sent home.
-
Attendance and Tardies: Students missing school due to a family trip, or any known extended absences must have a pre-arranged absence form on file that can be obtained in the attendance office. Parents may not PRQ their student for any reason other than the district approved excused absences/tardies. If your student is absent, please call on the same day or send your student with their valid excuse to be submitted to the office upon return to school. If an absence needs to be excused, please do so through our attendance office 509-354-6968. TARDIES: if you are late to 2 or more classes or have 3+ tardies in the same class, you will be issued Lunch Detention. Failure to appear to lunch detention will result in further disciplinary actions. 3122 Excused and Unexcused Absences (spokaneschools.org)

LC Tiger Fund Scholarship
The Lewis & Clark Tiger Fund Scholarship was started by the Class of 1966 in 2006 in order to recognize an LC senior who has overcome personal and/or life difficulties and has made a commitment to furthering his/her education after graduation from Lewis & Clark High School. We know that there are many students who have potential for college success but often get overlooked for scholarship assistance because their G.P.A. did not exceed a 3.5 minimum required for scholarship consideration. We also know that character and desire to improve play a large part in future success in school and life. Two scholarships will be awarded in 2023 - one for $2,500 and one for $2,000. Download the application here.
Applicant Qualifications:
- Applicants must be a LC Senior graduating in 2023.
- Must have a verifiable financial need that would make it difficult to pursue a college or university education without monetary assistance.
- Must have had a personal life challenge/difficulty that they have overcome.
- Must have a cumulative grade point average between 2.5 and 3.49.

Graduation Honors
At graduation, all Spokane Public Schools use the Latin Honors system to honor our top graduates. We will identify our Latin Honors students at the end of 1st semester.
How will the Latin Honors system work? This system recognizes the top students using weighted grade point averages. Students have the ability to get three different levels of recognition: Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, and Cum Laude. These are the same designations that colleges across the nation use to recognize top students. These designations would honor approximately 3% (Summa), 5% (Magna) and 12% (Cum Laude) of our current senior class for each category.
How are grades weighted? Weighted grades are calculated by providing higher points for grades earned in Honors courses and still higher points for grades earned in AP courses:
- Unweighted Courses: A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0
- Honors Courses: A=4.5, B=3.5, C=2.5, D=1.5, F=0
- AP Courses A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, F=0
- Because SPS uses a +/- grading scale, the above table is only a sampling of options. The easiest way for students to calculate the weighted grade point average is to add .5 to the GPA for honors classes and a 1.0 for Advanced Placement classes.

Student Parking: LC students can park in the two freeway lots (in front of the Field House and in front of the church to the east). Be sure to display your student parking permit to avoid getting a ticket in the student lots. Student parking permits can be purchased in the Business Office for $5.
