BUMC Moves to Unobserved COVID Testing 

On Thursday, Jan. 27, the Medical Campus transitioned to unobserved COVID testing for all students, staff and faculty. Testing becomes fully unobserved on Thursday, Feb. 3.

Please note the following: 

• Appointments are still required for unobserved drop-off. The same scheduling mechanisms will be in place as for observed testing along with the same hours. 
• You will receive an unobserved kit (swab, tube, and plastic bag) when you arrive for your observed test during the transition period (thru Feb. 2) and then receive a new kit when you drop off your unobserved kit. 
• Only one kit is provided to each person. Lost or damaged kits will be replaced, but please try to avoid that from happening. 
• It is critical that the test is performed no more than 24 hours in advance of the drop-off to ensure the validity of the sample. 

Instructional (L) Building Fire Alarm Test

Boston Fire will be conducting a test of the fire alarm in the Instructional (L) Building on Thursday, Feb. 3, at 5 p.m. It will last approximately 20-30 minutes. Building evacuation will not be necessary. Occupants in the Housman (R) Building may also hear the test.

Introducing MedEvent

The BUSM chapter of AOA and BUMC IT have collaborated to create a website that allows BUSM faculty, MD residents, and MD and PA students to easily view and attend online Medical Campus events, including the recently introduced faculty office hours and departmental grand rounds.

The new website MedEvent provides a concise calendar format of events identified by type. The site is easy to use and includes features that allow users to expand event details and “follow” events of interest by adding them to a personal “My Events” calendar.

The intended goals of MedEvent include:

• Increase student access to educational conferences.
• Create opportunities for students to attend clinical and basic science conferences.
• Increase faculty-student interaction through remote “office hour” events (faculty in medical and surgical specialties will be available for office hours).
• Improve student access to faculty to discuss sub-specialty practice and career development.
• Consolidate events for BUSM faculty, MD residents, MD and PA students.

MedEvent is available now, and requires BU authentication. 

Art Days 2022

Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to submit artwork of any medium to the 32nd annual BUMC Gallery for the Arts, sponsored by the Provost's Office. Art Days was started by Dean Emeritis Aram Chobanian to foster the support and growth of the creative arts at BUMC. The exhibition is mounted by the Creative Arts Society. Artwork (paintings, photos, poetry, sculpture, needlework, etc.) will be collected on Friday, Feb. 18. Pieces should be framed if possible. Security will be provided. Work will be returned Thursday, Feb. 24. Specific instructions will be sent at a later date to those who respond to this announcement.

Toby Chai, MD, Honored by American Urological Association

The professor and chair of Urology will receive the 2022 Distinguished Service Award from the AUA for exemplary contributions to the science of urology and advocacy for urological research. 

Sage E. Hawn, PhD, Receives Early Career Investigator Award

The second-year T32 postdoctoral fellow at the National Center for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and BUSM’s department of psychiatry is the recipient of the 2022 Donald F. Klein Early Career Investigator Award from the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA).

BUSM faculty must RSVP for the 2022 commencement ceremony and order their regalia by Friday, Feb. 11, to meet the university’s deadline.

Zoom Purge Protection: How to Save Zoom Recordings from Deletion

Starting March 13, Zoom Cloud Recordings that are at least 180 days will be automatically deleted. Sign up for EdMedia Office Hours to learn how to download Zoom recordings, archive on OneDrive, and upload to Kaltura MyMedia.

Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Solomon Carter Fuller, MD

Please join us for a virtual celebration honoring the life and legacy Solomon Carter Fuller, MD, who graduated from BUSM in 1897. The first Black psychiatrist in the country and a renowned neurologist, pathologist and educator, he worked with Dr. Alois Alzheimer and practiced in the Boston area before joining the BUSM faculty in 1919. Upon his retirement from academic medicine in 1933, he was appointed Emeritus Professor of Neurology, and continued in private practice for many years.  

The daylong event is sponsored by the BUSM Departments of Neurology, Psychiatry, Pathology & Laboratory Medicine; Diversity & Inclusion and Alumni Association Offices; and the BU Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center.
