Project Update: Providing Stormwater Leadership in the Delaware River Watershed
The Center for Watershed Protection (CWP) recently wrapped up a seven-year stretch as a Technical Field Liaison for the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF)’s Delaware River Restoration Fund. The Fund was launched in late 2013 with major funding from the William Penn Foundation to help community-based nonprofits to clean up and restore polluted waters and improve habitat for target species across the four-state Delaware River basin.
CWPA Member Spotlight: Aqualis Case Studies
Seattle, Wash. Lift Station Rehabilitation

Overview:
During the retrofit process on this commercial property, the client and their previously hired engineering firm noted an expected increase in their waste stream. AQUALIS regularly maintained the lift station on the property and was the first choice for the two entities to advise and redesign the current lift station.
Salisbury, Md. Bioretention Remediation

Overview:
Commercial property received Notice of Violation (NOV) requiring remediation of two bioretention cells on site.
Guest Blog: Understanding the MS4 Permit
“I still have to do my M-S4,” is a statement often heard at multiple stages of a project. However, this is not a one-and-done simple task.

A stormwater permit for a municipal separate storm sewer system (M-S4) is issued by a state agency on behalf of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The M-S4 permit requires permittees to continue to work on meeting the intent of the Clean Water Act. So, the system is in place to protect the environment and protect the health and safety of the community.

2024 National Watershed & Stormwater Conference Kansas City Field Trips Announced!
Conference attendees are strongly encouraged to sign up for one of our field trips. We are planning possible trips that provide a variety of experiences all focused on the Kansas City area and efforts to protect and preserve natural resources and water quality.

2024 National Watershed & Stormwater Conference Kansas City Pre-Conference Workshop Announced!
This pre-conference workshop will explore the basic principles of stormwater design and project implementation. We will discuss the impacts of urbanization including an understanding of the hydrologic, physical, water quality, and biologic impacts of urbanization on watersheds.

Become a Clean Water Certificate Instructor at CWP! Next class in February 2024
Apply to become an Instructor for the Clean Water Certificate Training Program (CWC Program)! The CWC Program for workforce development is an ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) accredited certificate program that promotes job growth in the stormwater industry and delivers hands-on, classroom, and field-based learning on industry-specific skills and knowledge.

Upcoming Events
Lunch and Learn Series (CWPA MEMBERS ONLY): Craig Shultz from American Excelsior Company presents "Erosion and Sediment Control Products, Materials, Applications, and Installation"
February 8th, 2024, 1:00 - 2:00 PM EST
Description: American Excelsior will discuss the difference in the types of fibers used in erosion and sediment control products and how that impacts application and performance. We will discuss how some sediment control products are designed to dam water, while others are designed to filter water and what that looks like in the field. We will discuss Turf Reinforcement Mats (TRMs), how their fiber type impacts performance and how they offer an environmentally friendly solution for areas of concentrated flow and high shear stress. We will also review basic installation methods for all erosion control blankets

2024 Webcast 2: Stormwater Funding
February 21st, 2024, 1:00 - 2:30 PM EST
Description: This webcast will highlight the main water infrastructure funding sources in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. This webcast will also explore a variety of federal, state, local and private funding sources that have been deployed in greenprint, floodprint, urban stream restoration, and other green infrastructure projects.

Speakers: Stacey Isaac Berahzer from IB Environmental & Charles Flink from NC State University

Clean Water Certificate Training Program: Instructor Preparation Program
February 26 – March 1, 2024, 1-3pm EST each day
Description: Apply to become an Instructor for the Clean Water Certificate Training Program (CWC Program)! The CWC Program for workforce development is an ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) accredited certificate program that promotes job growth in the stormwater industry and delivers hands-on, classroom, and field-based learning on industry-specific skills and knowledge. Successful completion of the Instructor Preparation Program (IPP) will permit qualified candidates to continuously administer the CWC Program, no continued education units required

Lunch and Learn Series (CWPA MEMBERS ONLY): Scott Iwamoto from Craftwater

2024 Webcast 3: New Tools for Stormwater Management
March 20th, 2024, 1:00 - 2:30 PM EST
Description: In the City of Boston, storm sewer systems typically collect rainfall runoff and discharge by gravity into a receiving waterbody. If the sea level is sufficiently high, discharge by gravity is limited or no longer possible, which can lead to surcharging and interior flooding during intense rain events. During extreme storm events, the combined effect of sea level rise (SLR) and storm surge could restrict or prevent stormwater discharge in many locations, leading to widespread flooding throughout the City. This can occur even if the shoreline is protected from the direct impact of storm surge by measures such as shoreline elevation.

Speakers: Tom Jacobs from Mid-America Regional Council and Charlie Jewell from Boston Water & Sewer Commission
