In-Person Absentee Voting

Begins Tuesday, February 7, 2023:

In-person absentee voting for the February 21, 2023 primary election will occur on weekdays from Tuesday, February 7, 2023, to Friday, February 17, 2023, during Village Hall regular business hours (and until 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 16 and Friday, February 17, 2023).

In-person absentee voting will be done on ExpressVote machines. The ExpressVote ballot-marking device provides voters with the familiarity of a touchscreen combined with the security of a paper ballot. Voters will navigate the ballot and make selections using a touchscreen. The ExpressVote machine prevents unclear marks and under/overvoting for candidates. After verifying selections, voters will print their paper ballot. Voters will then have the opportunity to review the paper ballot prior to the ballot being placed in an absentee envelope to be counted on Election Day.

Come check out the ExpressVote machines during in-person absentee voting. Here's what you can expect:

1.   Voters will check in with Voting staff.

2.   A poll worker will assist in setting up the ExpressVote for the correct ward.

3.   ExpressVote provides voter with races they are eligible to vote in.

4.   Voter makes selections and receives a printed ballot.

5.   Ballot will be placed in an absentee envelope to be counted on Election Day.

The ExpressVote machine does NOT CAST or COUNT the votes or transmit any vote totals.

The Primary Election will be held on Tuesday, February 21, 2023.

You may review what's on the ballot, request an absentee ballot be mailed to you and track your requested absentee ballot by visiting: https://myvote.wi.gov/en-us/

Time to Renew Dog

and Cat Licenses for 2023:

Your annual dog and cat licenses expire every December 31. Licensing is often overlooked until your best friend ends up at your friendly, local animal control! Unlicensed animals cost more to reclaim and it is harder to reunite animals without tags, such as a license. Licensing your pet is required by state law and there are great reasons to keep it updated each year:

  1. Keeps you compliant with state and local laws and ensures all residents and their beloved pets are protected from rabies.
  2. If your pet is wearing a license when it is found as a stray, MADACC gives them ONE FREE RIDE HOME each calendar year on the day of capture only. This saves you money and prevents a stressful visit to MADACC when we can reach you immediately.
  3. Current licenses are a great way for Good Samaritans who may find your dog/cat to call and find out where they belong, again, saving your animal some stress and saving you some money.
  4. Licenses are only $12 for all spayed and neutered pets, and $24 if they are intact—a great value and the funds go to support animal welfare in your community.

Get your license at Village Hall, or at MADACC (3839 W. Burnham Street, W. Milwaukee), where we do low cost rabies vaccines. If applying for a license at Village Hall, please make checks out to the Village of Whitefish Bay. You can also go online to www.madacc.org and renew or apply for a new license from the comfort of your home.

Update from the Department of Public Works:

Whitefish Bay Receives

WDNR Urban Forestry Grant:

Last week, Village staff met with Kim Sebastian, Wisconsin DNR Urban Forestry Coordinator, to kick off the recently awarded 2023 Urban Forestry Grant Program. The program helps fund projects consistent with state and national goals for increasing the urban forest canopy.

The Village will match $21,250 in grant funding in order to hire Wachtel Tree Science, to perform an inventory update of public trees contained in our geographic information system (GIS) database. The information gained from the inventory update will be invaluable in providing data for formulating staffing and budget requirements in defending our urban tree canopy from the onslaught of Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) and other pests.

Keep an eye out for two Certified Arborists from Wachtel Tree Science who will begin roaming the Village sidewalks and parks taking a current inventory starting in late April.

NSHD Healthy Highlight 2/1/2023: National Children’s Dental Health Month

Importance of Good Dental and Oral Hygiene

Oral health is essential to overall health and well-being as it affects our abilities to speak, eat, and show emotions. Additionally, oral health also impacts one’s self esteem and school or work performance.

Oral diseases—which range from cavities and gum disease to oral cancer—cause pain and disability for millions of Americans and cost taxpayers billions of dollars each year.

In Fact

  • By age 8, over half of children (52%) have had a cavity in their primary (baby) teeth.
  • More than half of children aged 6 to 8 have had a cavity in at least one of their baby (primary) teeth.
  • More than half of adolescents aged 12 to 19 have had a cavity in at least one of their permanent teeth.

How to Keep Good Dental Hygiene

For Children:

  • Brush their teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Help your child brush their teeth until they have good brushing skills.
  • If your child is younger than 6, watch them brush. Make sure they use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste and always spit it out rather than swallow.
  • Ask your child’s dentist to apply dental sealants when appropriate.
  • Drink tap water that contains fluoride

Because of these dental hygiene practices, there have been overall declines in childhood dental problems. Specifically, since 1999-2004, the prevalence of untreated tooth decay in primary teeth of children aged 2-5 years has dropped by half.

With proper preventive care, such as regular dental check-ups, brushing, flossing, fluoridation, and dental sealants, the risk of dental disease can greatly be reduced.
