It was an honor to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the 48th Annual Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Memorial Breakfast with Governor-Elect Moore and County Executive Ball. It is a privilege to continue his legacy, building an equitable community for all!
Thank you Howard County Office of Human Rights and Equity for inviting me to your annual, "Living the Dream" awards ceremony. Congratulations to the recipients of this prestigious annual award. I am thankful for your continued committment to our communities.
On Saturday, January 21st, I had the pleasure of joining County Executive Ball, members from the State Delegation, and my Council colleagues at the Lunar New Year celebration.

Sewells Orchard Pond Repair Project Public Meeting

Howard County Rec & Parks Headquarters 

The Howard County Stormwater Management Division is working on a capital project to repair the outlet structure for the eastern of the three ponds in the Sewells Orchard development. This repair is required due to the poor condition of the existing metal outlet structure.

Applications Now Being Accepted for MIHU January Open Enrollment Period
 
The Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) is now accepting applications for its Moderate Income Housing Unit (MIHU) program January open enrollment period. Held quarterly, DHCD’s MIHU is an inclusionary zoning program that offers quality new homes at reduced sale prices and rents to income eligible families.
 
To purchase an MIHU home, individuals must apply to DHCD during an open enrollment period to be placed in the database. More details regarding our MIHU homeownership program are available here or contact DHCD at (410) 313-6318 (select option two) or email [email protected].
 
To rent an MIHU unit, a qualified applicant’s household income may not exceed 60 percent of the Howard County median income (example: maximum $52,098 for a one-person household and $74,425 for a four-person household). Visit DHCD’s MIHU rental website for more information.
 
MIHU homeownership applications are now available online and completed applications can be either submitted online, mailed to 9820 Patuxent Woods Drive, Suite 224, Columbia, MD, 21046, or dropped off at DHCD’s Patuxent Woods Drive office by appointment only. Applications are being accepted through 4 PM, Tuesday, January 31st.

Landlord-Tenant Law: Know Your Rights and Responsibilities
 
As part of Maryland Libraries Together's Career Success Month, the Howard County Library System (HCLS) will host our Department of Community Resources and Services’ (DCRS) Office of Consumer Protection for a series of virtual and in-person workshops this about tenant rights and responsibilities.

Participants will learn: how to shop for a rental; get an understanding of leases, application fees and security deposits and how rent increases should be communicated; what you should do if you have a dispute with your landlord or face early termination and eviction; how to avoid rental scams; and much more.

Human trafficking is a crime that requires more than just good effort and intention to combat. In order for Howard County to be the best county for all, we cannot let our most vulnerable residents slip through the cracks.


Did you know residents 60 years of age and older or persons with a disability can take the Regional Transportation Agency of Central Maryland’s (RTA) fixed route service for free? Individuals just need to complete a RTA Certified FREE Ride Card Application and submit it either via email or mailed or dropped off in person at the RTA’s Administrative Office. Once received, applications will be reviewed within 48 hours and the applicant will be contacted to have their picture taken for their RTA Certified Bus Rider ID, completed weekdays, Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM. The ID can be processed in five minutes while rider waits in the lobby or it can be mailed.

Need Assistance Finding and Paying for Child Care?

LOCATE: Child Care is a free personalized service that helps parents find child care. The service provides referrals and counseling to help parents choose high quality child care to meet their needs. LOCATE: Child Care also offers an Enhanced Service for parents of children with special needs and those who need to speak with a Referral Specialist in Spanish.

Another available resource for families, is the Child Care Scholarship Program. If you’re working, in school or participating in an approved job training program you may be eligible for the Child Care Scholarship Program. The Child Care Scholarship Program (formerly known as the child care subsidy program) provides financial assistance with child care costs to eligible working families.

Early Childhood Education
CAC’s Early Childhood Education program will open Head Start and Prekindergarten slots for the 2023-24 school year on March 1, 2023. Children must be three-to-five years old to enter the program. All Program services are free to enrolled eligible families.

Rental Assistance
CAC provides housing assistance and eviction prevention to Howard County residents who have fallen behind in their rent but are not yet facing eviction. Renters should contact CAC immediately when they are first unable to pay their rent rather than waiting for an eviction.

Residents may apply via the CAC website, GET HELP – Community Action Council of Howard County (cac-hc.org), by emailing [email protected], or by calling 410-313-6440. They may also visit CAC’s Howard County Food Bank and or the Multiservice Center located at the North Laurel Community Center to meet with a CAC Community Worker.
Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland 
Meals on Wheels provides nutritious meals once a week for seniors, as well as support and safety-net services.

Receive FREE support while recovering from a health crisis (weekly calls, wellness checks, connection to community resources, and more). To qualify, you must be 18 years or older and live or worship in Howard County.

The ECHO Project

HCPSM collection of instruments: Howard County Parents for School Music (HCPSM) is collecting unused instruments on Jan 29th at Long Reach HS.

This drive, named Every Child Has Opportunities (ECHO) Project, often provides instruments to students who lack the resources to rent or purchase their own.

Thanks to Music & Arts these instruments are professionally cleaned, and minor repairs are made before being distributed. In prior years they were happy to take unusual instruments such as accordions.

The 2023 Summer Programs Preview, which contains descriptions of HCPSS’ four summer programs and enrollment information, is available to view and download from the Summer Programs.

  • Gifted and Talented Summer Institutes for Talent Development (Entering Grades 1-8)

Election plans are underway for the annual Oakland Mills Elections. In order for the elections to run efficiently, resident volunteers are needed for the Oakland Mills Election Monitor Committee.

Committee members meet once prior to the election and assist with various aspects of elections which include serving as "poll workers" on election day on April 22, 2023, counting ballots, and ensuring that the election runs according to Oakland Mills election guidelines and legal documents.

Eagles, Owls & the Bird Atlas
February 16th, 2023 at 7 PM

Did you know that Howard County has at least 6 breeding pairs of bald eagles?

Eagles and owls are the first birds of the nesting season and in this talk you will learn their calls and how to find them. You will also learn how to identify, support, and protect many of the other birds in your own backyard.

The Maryland/DC Breeding Bird Atlas is a citizen science project mapping the distribution of breeding birds every 10-square miles. Sue Muller, Howard County Co-Coordinator, gives an overview of the project and will show you how easy it is to help collect and contribute data as we enter the fourth year of a five-year study in 2023.

Howard County’s Roving Radish promotes healthy eating habits through meal kits comprised of locally and regionally grown foods straight from the farm to your table.

Meal Kits will resume for pickup starting April 17th, 2023 - Week 1. Online ordering opens March 1st, 2023.

The meal kits are available to anyone who works, plays or lives in Howard County and are offered at a discounted price to those in need.

Join for an informative discussion about rearing a successful veggie garden!

Kent Phillips will share his insight and expertise on the ways to cultivate a beautiful vegetable garden. The presentation focuses on soil testing, pest prevention, and disease prevention. Kent will discuss how to conduct a soil test, where to send the sample for analysis, and how to interpret the results. The presentation also contains information on using integrated pest management (IPM) to reduce bad insects in the vegetable garden.

Maryland Winds is an ensemble of professional musicians in the greater Baltimore–Washington, DC, area. Most are current or past performers with the premier military bands, in major symphony orchestras, or as freelancers. Many are also active music educators in schools and private studios.

Seven award-winning local photographers will be featured at the Bernice Kish Gallery. This historic exhibit is led by Charles Levie, photographer and teacher who developed his ability to capture unique perspectives of every-day scenes while teaching all over the world. Levie states that, “recording the wonders of Asia, Europe, Australia, and Africa has been both a joy and a challenge.”

All events will take place at the Bernice Kish Gallery at Slayton House – 10400 Cross Fox Lane. Gallery hours are M-F 9 AM – 4:30 PM. Visit wildelake.org for details.
