Kate Masters is a Saugerties resident, and has lived in the towns along the Hudson River and in the Hudson Valley for all of her life. Her work includes both abstract compositions as well as landscapes inspired by local settings.

Marbletown Community Center
Our partnership with Town of Marbletown Parks and Rec. Dept. will continue in 2024 with continued free Wednesday yoga classes. Classes will be held at the Marbletown Community Center. All classes will be taught by Laura Brown and we are grateful to be working with her and the Parks and Rec. Dept. to bring these classes to our community.
Participants must register for each class. To register click on the links below:
Laura loves bringing yoga into people’s lives, encouraging her students to welcome space, breath, and movement to reset their bodies and minds. These classes are perfect class for the absolute beginner, the curious, the seasoned yogi and everybody in-between! All are encouraged to move at their own pace in this hour-long class.
Please be sure to bring your yoga mat and any blocks or straps if you use them. The library will have extra mats and blocks if needed. As with any exercise class, be sure to check with your doctor before starting.

*Due to the popularity of this program we are thrilled to offer a second session of Mindful Aging with Stephanie Speer. This is not a follow up session but a second session offering to those who were waitlisted.*
May I meet this moment fully. May I meet it as a friend. This is an opportunity for women over 55 years of age to come together for contemplation and connection to use the tools of mindfulness to meet the joys, sorrows, fears, pleasures and challenges of aging with greater ease, balance, and control. Our time together will include conversation, information, and participation in simple mindfulness meditation practices provided in a safe and supportive environment.

As an instructor of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), Stephanie Speer has been teaching mindfulness practices to individuals and groups for over 30 years. She received her Masters in Humanistic Education from Goddard College and completed her MBSR professional training from Jon Kabat-Zinn and Saki Santorelli of the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. Her professional work and personal life has been informed by 35 years of meditation practice and Buddhist studies. As a long term resident of Ulster County, she continues to enjoy the beauty, serenity, and simplicity of living in this rural area which has helped to sustain her meditation practice and enabled her to enter the busyness of the world with greater calm and ease.

The book for January is The Wager by David Grann
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty's Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as "the prize of all the oceans," it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia. The men, after being marooned for months and facing starvation, built the flimsy craft and sailed for more than a hundred days, traversing nearly 3,000 miles of storm-wracked seas. They were greeted as heroes. But then, six months later, another, even more decrepit craft landed on the coast of Chile. This boat contained just three castaways, and they told a very different story. The thirty sailors who landed in Brazil were not heroes - they were mutineers. The first group responded with countercharges of their own, of a tyrannical and murderous senior officer and his henchmen. It became clear that while stranded on the island the crew had fallen into anarchy, with warring factions fighting for dominion over the barren wilderness. As accusations of treachery and murder flew, the Admiralty convened a court martial to determine who was telling the truth. January is a perfect time for soups and stews to stave off winter's chill. This month our group will be keeping it cozy by cooking a favorite soup or stew or a bread to go with those cozy dishes.
The Cooks & Books group is a cookbook group. We meet the 3rd Friday of each month and take turns choosing a cookbook or theme to cook from. Each member then makes a chosen dish to bring to the meeting where we feast and discuss the cookbook and recipes. It’s a whole lot of fun and great food.

Claudine is a native French speaker, born in Paris and raised in Europe; following a 30 year Government career abroad, she chose Stone Ridge to retire in.
