A MESSAGE FROM REVEREND TINA
The baby is born. The wise men are almost here. Already a new year has begun. How will you enter it?

A small group of us shared two poems with very different approaches to setting out into newness when we gathered for Centering Prayer last week. I offer them to you again here so you can be comforted, or strengthened, or encouraged, or accompanied, or propelled on your way.

God bless you and keep you in 2022.
Tina xoxo
Companion of the Way,
you know the place where I have come from,
those I have loved and left.
You know those things
I have longed to bid farewell to.
Accompany my quivering hands
as they grapple with unfamiliar things.
Accompany my memory as I absorb new information.
Accompany my wandering legs
when I get lost and disorientated.
Accompany my heart
that I may be open to new possibilities of friendship.
Accompany me
when I tarnish the new place with my old mistakes.
Take my brave face in your hands
and my fears in your love.
Take the strain of being a beginner
and not yet competent.
Take the exhausting alertness of being unknown
And not yet loved.
Until I can return to those who love me
and tell them my story this day.
Accompany me as I enter this chapter on my own,
dear Companion of my way.

--- Tess Ward.
From Pocket Prayers for Pilgrims
Away O Soul, hoist instantly the anchor!
Cut the hawsers – haul out – shake out every sail!
Sail forth – steer for the deep waters only;
Reckless O Soul, exploring,
I with thee and thou with me,
for we are bound where mariner
has not yet dared to go,
and we will risk the ship, ourselves and all.
O my brave Soul.
O farther, father sail!
O daring joy, but safe!
Are they not all the seas of God?
O farther, farther sail!

--- Walt Whitman.

Oppose Christian Nationalism
and Mark the Anniversary of Last Year’s
Raid on the Capitol on January 6th
The following is a quote from a position statement written by Christians Against Christian Nationalism:
“As Christians, our faith teaches us everyone is created in God’s image and commands us to love one another. As Americans, we value our system of government and the good that can be accomplished in our constitutional democracy. Today, we are concerned about a persistent threat to both our religious communities and our democracy — Christian nationalism.

Christian nationalism seeks to merge Christian and American identities, distorting both the Christian faith and America’s constitutional democracy. Christian nationalism demands Christianity be privileged by the State and implies that to be a good American, one must be Christian. It often overlaps with and provides cover for white supremacy and racial subjugation. We reject this damaging political ideology and invite our Christian brothers and sisters to join us in opposing this threat to our faith and to our nation. “

On Thursday, January 6th, the First Congregational Church in Williamstown and St. John’s Episcopal Church will both mark the anniversary of the political disturbance that happened in our nation’s capital in 2021. There will be a public protest gathering at 12:00 noon in Williamstown and a service at St. John’s at 1:00 p.m. You are invited to participate in either or both of these.

If you are not able to attend, you may want to take a moment between noon and 1:00 p.m. on Thursday to pray in communion with the groups gathered in Williamstown, and around the country.

For more information, please contact Sarah Sieber.

Location TBD
First Sunday after
the Epiphany
Luke 3:15-17, 21-22

As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, "I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire."

Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, "You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased."

Our New Prayer Basket

We welcome you to use our new prayer basket.
On Sundays you will find a basket near the welcome table, with slips of paper available for you to write down prayer requests. You can ask for prayers for those who are ill, or in need of healing or encouragement of any kind, prayers for intentions, journeys, or projects, the birth or adoption of children, and prayers of thanksgiving for anything that needs celebrating. In other words, please ask for any prayers that are important to you and those you love. You may identify yourself and those for whom prayers are needed, but names are not necessary or required. These requests will be prayed for by our healing ministers both during the service and during the week for a period of one month. Keep an eye out for the basket!!
Healing Prayers

If you would like to receive healing prayers from
The Rev. Ted Cobden, Pennie Curry, or Sue Gore,

WHAT ARE YOU
GRATEFUL FOR?
In this time of fear and anxiety, it can be easy to miss the daily blessings that are right in front of us. Being grateful is not just for good times. Being grateful is even more important when fear sets a place at your table and heartbreak seems to be in your every breath. Because by being grateful we become aware of all the ways God is working in us. Being grateful is a part of our healing and our deliverance. Being grateful is where our best selves reside.
SHINE YOUR LIGHT
