Opportunity Drives Well-Being

A recent report released by the Educational Testing Service Center for Research on Human Capital and Education, Opportunity Across the States, details how important human and social capital are to well-being. Inequities can prevent particular populations from building the human and social capital they need to thrive. Human capital (the skills, knowledge, and education a person has) and social capital (the network connections with others) are key factors in how effectively people can function in school and in the workplace. Without opportunity to build these factors, underserved and minoritized individuals may lack health and comfort and struggle to reach their potential.

  • Coaching can be a force for positive change in helping students gather what they need to thrive and to move confidently into the workplace.

  • Coaches connect students with faculty and staff who can increase their networks and potentially build their knowledge and experience.

  • Coaching builds the self-knowledge that shows students how they need to develop, and the agency to find people and resources who can help.

Ask your students:

  • Who can you meet with to learn more about what they do?

  • In what type of work would you like to gain experience?

  • What group, club, or organization would you be willing to join to grow your network of contacts?
