Food for Our Souls:
Opportunity for Good
There are a few ways you can support the victims and families of Monday's tragic shooting. Coastside Hope is collecting money to go directly to individuals and families affected from the shooting, for funeral expenses, lost wages and other support they may need. ALAS Half Moon Bay Strong Fund will directly support the farmworker community as well as the families of those who have lost their lives. Both Coastside Hope and ALAS are accepting gift cards to pass out to those effected. You can mail or drop off your contribution at Coastside Hope at 99 Ave Alhambra #1089, El Granada, CA 94018 and/or at the ALAS office, 646 Purissima St., Half Moon Bay, CA 94019.

In Memoriam: Marciano Martinez Jimenez, 50; Jose Romero Perez; Aixiang Zhang, 74; Zhishen Liu, 73; Qizhong Cheng, 66; Jingzhi Lu, 64; Yetao Bing, 43.
Victim Remembrance Events This Week in HMB
A candlelight vigil to honor, remember, and pay tribute to the victims of last Monday's mass shooting incident takes place this Friday, January 27th, 5pm, at Mac Dutra Plaza on Main Street in Half Moon Bay. The event’s program includes songs and prayers. Spanish, Mandarin, and ASL interpretation is to be provided.

Then on Tuesday, January 31st, 4pm, a memorial service will be held at the Boys & Girls Club Event Center at 530 Kelly Ave. The service includes prayer and healing words from interfaith leaders. Immediately following the memorial service is a candlelight processional walk starting on Kelly Avenue, past the Mac Dutra Plaza memorial, down Main Street to the I.D.E.S. Hall.

The City, County, and Chamber of Commerce is hosting a free dinner for the community at the I.D.E.S. Hall on January 31st, 6pm, to explore how to move forward as a community. Pre-registration is mandatory, so please register here so that everyone can be hosted appropriately.

We also want to draw attention to UUCC's recent service on grief and remembrance. On November 6th, 11am, Ron Ahnen, PhD, explored the emotional and spiritual connections we share with our loved ones and ancestors in a service entitled Embracing Grief and Joy in Remembrance.Ron speaks on how he worked many years to overcome his grief on losing his 8yo sister to homicide.
UUCC Tea by the Sea, Sunday, January 29th, 3:30pm
We want to offer the opportunity for our community to process together the troubling times we've experienced lately at the next UUCC Tea by the Sea this Sunday, January 29th, 3:30pm: the rains, floods, electrical outages, sinkholes, now capped off by the worst mass shooting in San Mateo County's history. RSVPs are appreciated and sharing a dish is encouraged. The potluck is be held in the Heavlin's backyard in El Granada at 850 Francisco Street.
UUCC First Sunday In-Person Service, February 5th
The Touchstones Theme for February is Resilience. On February 5th, Noreen Cooper Heavlin delivers a sermon entitled "A Thing or Two About Resilience." This service takes place at Odd Fellows Hall at 11am, with a Zoom option also likely (Zoom link).

Noreen has been the Chair of the UUCC Planning Committee for nearly 8 years—which qualifies her for this talk (mic drop). She also overcame a difficult childhood and recovered from some serious health challenges. Come and hear how living with hope, staying present, relinquishing resentments, and reducing anxiety have helped Noreen stay resilient throughout her lifetime.

We will have a wonderful new pianist join us for this service, Diedrik Edholm, accompanied by his father, Kaj Edholm, on violin.

This live in-person service takes place at Odd Fellows Hall, 526 Main Street, Half Moon Bay, CA, 94019. Out of an abundance of caution, we require mask wearing for churchgoers throughout the service—with the exception of those actively speaking at the front of the room. Odd Fellows Hall has quite new high-circulation air ventilation system. And since May 2022, with our mask protocols in place, no one attending our in-person services at Odd Fellows Hall has caught COVID. The link to join us over Zoom will be included in the next newsletter.
Zoom Gallery View Sunday, February 19th, 11am
Please join us on February 19th as Diana Luykx, MSW, continues to explore the Touchstone Theme for February, Resilience. Diana presents a sermon entitled "Resilience in Social Justice Work: Avoiding Burnout and Refilling Your Cup." Diana shares insights gleaned from her conversations with UUs engaged in social justice: how they keep going and how they are guided by our Sources and Principles.

Diana is a lifelong Unitarian Universalist and an original member of UUCC. Her mother, Nancy Palmer, is a founding member of UUCC. Diana is a medical social worker and lives in El Granada.

Gallery View Sundays offer a shorter homily and more active discussions from attendees. Looking forward to your participation.

Please join us at 11:00 am Pacific, 2pm Eastern.
