You can subscribe to receive City news and updates at GarlandTX.gov. If you have not yet set up an account, there is a "Create an Account" link at the very top of the page, above the navigation bar. Click that to create your account. Click on the green "Notify Me" button to get the subscription page. You have several subscription options.

Be Prepared to Report Power Outages  

As a GP&L customer, you can report power outages by calling 972-205-3000 or texting OUT to 972-205-4000. If you report by text, reply STATUS to the confirmation message to check the status of the outage.

If you don’t have a cell phone associated with your utility account, text the account number (including the dash) for the location experiencing the outage. To find out more, including how to associate a cell phone with your account, visit gpltexas.org/outage-center/outage-text-reporting
Be Prepared with an Emergency Plan & Kit

Make sure your family is prepared for emergencies by making a plan and preparing an emergency kit. Visit GarlandTX.gov/258/Make-a-Plan for help in making your emergency plan and GarlandTX.gov/259/Build-a-Kit for suggestions on what should be included in your emergency kit.

English Conversation Class at the Library
This weekly interactive conversation group for new English speakers and other patrons is geared toward improving every day skills in a casual setting.

The program will allow participants to improve their conversational skills in a friendly environment as well as build vocabulary and confidence.

Classes will take place at 6 p.m. Mondays starting Jan. 10 at the Central Library, 625 Austin St., and at 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays starting Jan. 11 at the South Garland Branch Library, 4845 Broadway Blvd.

Tree Disposal for Garland Residents
Garland residents can help free up space in the landfill by dropping off trees at no cost at the Wood Recycling Facility, 3175 Elm Grove Road, during normal business hours.

You can also place your undecorated, live tree on the curb for brush and bulky pickup.

Not sure what to do with wrapping paper, ribbons and other trimmings? Use the Waste Wizard to make sure you’re recycling right!

COVID-19 Vaccines, Boosters Available at Garland's Public Health Clinic

You can get the COVID-19 vaccine without an appointment at our Public Health Clinic, 206 Carver St., between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Public Health Clinic is providing initial doses for adults and children, as well as booster doses of Moderna, Pfizer and Janssen vaccines based on CDC guidance. Pfizer recently expanded booster eligibility to adolescents 16 and 17 years of age.

Flu Shots Available at Garland's Public Health Clinic

Flu shots are available at the Garland Public Health Clinic, 206 Carver St., from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays for adults, children and seniors who are insured. Low-cost flu vaccines for uninsured children and adults are also available.

City Council Meetings
Jan. 3 and 4
The Garland City Council Work Session will begin at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 3. Regular Meeting will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, at City Hall, 200 N. Fifth St.

Boards & Commissions Meetings
All upcoming Boards & Commissions meetings can be found on the Public Meetings calendar at GarlandTX.gov.

In-person meetings have resumed, but you can continue to watch the meetings online. The virtual meeting link will be included in the individual meeting agenda. You may participate by telephone. Dial-in numbers will be posted with the virtual meeting information.

Candidate Packets Available
Jan. 4
The City of Garland will hold a May 7 general election to elect council members for Districts 1, 2, 4 and 5. A candidate package will be available on the City Secretary’s webpage under “Elections” beginning Tuesday, Jan. 4. There will be a new candidate orientation to provide assistance in navigating the application process at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11. Learn more at GarlandTX.gov.
COVID-19 Updates
As of Monday, Dec. 27, the Garland Health Department has received reports of 742 active cases out of 41,095 confirmed cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) in Garland residents since the beginning of the pandemic, as well as 627 deaths. The City updates its posted case numbers each Monday.

The City of Garland and its community partners are facilitating access to recovery programs for Garland residents who have been impacted by COVID-19. Assistance is available for a variety of services, including financial assistance for housing, utilities, food and medical expenses, as well as workforce training and job placement services, and counseling and emergency shelter assistance.
