Why Can't We All Be More "Cooperative"?

For years I thought, "Why doesn't someone create a 'hub' for nonprofits---a marketplace of sorts---where all of their business needs can be met through partnering with various vetted practitioners who want to work with these nonprofits? Marketing, IT, fundraising, website design, and more---all represented? Essentially, one hand washing the other?"

Well, Danette O'Connell, a successful serial entrepreneur, did it, and I applaud and admire her! Her venture, The Nonprofit Cooperative, is a dedicated nonprofit organization itself, committed to supporting and strengthening nonprofit organizations across the United States. The Cooperative provides FREE access for nonprofits (called "associates") to valuable resources, information, and training, so nonprofits can remain focused on their core missions. Danette's team pre-screens and vets any of these for-profits that want to serve her associates, and those for-profits are called "members."

By serving as a bridge between associates and members, The Nonprofit Cooperative aims to strengthen the nonprofit sector, foster collaboration, and facilitate the achievement of community-centric goals.

As we start the new year, The Nonprofit Cooperative is having a Nonprofit Fundraising Summit starting in January. Read all about it here: The Nonprofit Cooperative. The idea behind the Summit is to have nonprofits think outside the box, beyond galas and year-end appeals, giving them ideas on how to fundraise all year long.

A Tip for Nonprofits: Don't forget to put sample bequest intention language on your website! Attorneys and potential donors will often quietly visit your site (before contacting you) to grab sample language to work with. (In fact, they may never contact you at all!) So, if you don't have that language easy to access, the bequests coming in may not be very streamlined, and may even name the wrong org (see more down below in the Professional Advisors section)! Make it easy for donors to name you in their estate plans. Dartmouth College has some terrific examples of how to illustration sample language...click here: Sample Bequest Language | Gift Planning (dartmouth.edu)

A Tip for Donors: Giving Circles are a common way for "newer" donors to band together with a cohort of like-minded people, vet organizations that interest them, and decide on a large gift together (after pooling their money). A terrific leader in the world of Giving Circles is Grapevine. Click here for more information: Grapevine Giving Circles Network | Grapevine

A Tip for Professional Advisors: When helping a client with a bequest intention for a non-profit, listing the name of the non-profit in the governing document might not be enough. A better idea is to include the Employer Identification Number (EIN) as well, for good measure. Here is a great database from the IRS as you need it: Tax Exempt Organization Search | Internal Revenue Service (irs.gov)
