Design For Manufacturing and Assembly
Jason Chiu | Jason.chiu@ubc.ca
Overview
Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) is a design approach that focuses on ease of manufacturing and efficiency of assembly. In North America, due to the fragmented nature of construction whereby the designers, engineers, manufacturer, and contractors all work independently, bridging this knowledge gap will help improve the success rate of projects. DFMA will improve projects by reducing time, waste, cost and labour, while increasing quality and efficiency.
3–Day Workshop
This 3-day hands-on workshop will be held in a lecture-design-build format. It will be led by faculty and staff at the UBC Centre for Advanced Wood Processing (CAWP) and the UBC School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (SALA).
The expertise from industry leaders in design, engineering, fabrication, and installation will also be called upon to discuss lessons learned in mass timber construction. Participants will be guided through the process of designing mass-timber projects with the consideration of manufacturing technologies.
The use of digital technology in design and manufacturing are aiding the realization of mass-timber projects. The participants will be supported through a design-build exercise utilizing Computer Aided Design (CAD) software for design and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software for manufacturing of components. The project will culminate with the fabrication of components and the assembly of a mass-timber structure.
Who should attend?
This workshop is geared towards architects, engineers, and construction professionals interested in participating in a hands-on, design-build challenge with the goal to gain a better understanding of the processes required to efficiently design mass-timber structures.
Fees
$695.00/person (Registration is limited due to the hands-on nature of this course)
Date/Location: February 9-11, 2023 at UBC CAWP

Opportunities in Japan’s Commercial Building Sector
Jim Ivanoff | ivanoff@bcwood.jp
With Japan finally shedding COVID restrictions on business, the economy is expected to grow significantly in 2023. This particularly looms large for the commercial building and hospitality sectors. Once the borders reopened in October, inbound travelers came roaring back. Now that China will also allow cross-border travel, Japan’s inbound tourism is expected to make a full recovery soon.
Combined with the projected demand from the Osaka Expo in 2025, there is a rush to restart stalled hotel and resort projects. The opening of the border was also a signal to Japanese consumers that it was ok to go out to enjoy activities such as dining and leisure shopping again, so commercial facilities in urban cores are seeing a return of traffic. Designers and architects who specialize in these projects are finally being contracted again. As a result, we see great opportunities for members in these recently dormant sectors.
With the borders open, the BC Wood Japan Office is also welcoming members back to in-person events. The 2023 Nikkei Architectural and Construction Materials Show, which will be held from February 28 to March 1, is a great option to get back in front of Japanese customers. This is the biggest construction industry trade show in Japan, covering everything from lumber to finished products. Nikkei attracts large numbers of architects and designers working on commercial projects, so it is the perfect event to promote high value wood products and finishing materials to this sector that is ready to expand again.

Are We Approaching the Golden Age of CLT?
Patrizia
CLT holds several advantages over traditional construction materials. It has a shorter construction period (by six months on average), is cheaper to manufacture due to its prefabricated method, is lighter and more durable than concrete and has a better thermal performance.
Its strong sustainability credentials – lower CO2 emissions and energy usage than traditional construction materials – are particularly appealing. 1m3 spruce wood absorbs 622kg CO2 whereas 1m3 concrete emits 300kg CO2.

Why More Schools Should be Built With Wood
REMI Network
Today’s modern light-frame wood and mass timber buildings have a proven fire safety record and are suitable for meeting the stringent safety guidelines for schools. Wood buildings, particularly those using engineered wood products, are well suited to withstand and remain resilient against lateral seismic forces.
Along with environmental and safety benefits, the report says prefabricated light-frame and mass timber schools can potentially be built better and faster. Manufactured off-site and quickly assembled on-site, these building systems can shorten the construction timeline—by months in some cases.
