Peter Paul eNews - November 2022

Dear Michelle,

We hope those who celebrate had a wonderful Thanksgiving with friends and family! We have a lot to share with you this month as we celebrate a time of gratitude and the upcoming holiday season. The Holiday Angel initiative will kick off soon, and we'll share more information about that program in future communications.

Giving Tuesday is also happening tomorrow, Nov. 29th. Please join us in this global generosity movement, unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world. Check out our social media tomorrow to learn more on how to get involved!

Don't forget to connect with us on FacebookInstagram, and Twitter for all of the latest announcements, and thank you for your continued passion for Peter Paul and our purpose to Educate the Child, Engage the Family, and Empower the Community.

NAP Credits

Peter Paul is an approved organization under the Virginia Department of Education’s Neighborhood Assistance Program (NAP). We have a limited number of NAP Tax Credits available for this fiscal year (July 1, 2022 - June 30, 2023), and therefore will make them available to donors who give $500 - $125,000 on a first come, first served basis. The credits will be given to donors as the forms (with donation) are received, until there are no credits remaining. Please note that with the limited number of credits that Peter Paul has available, they won’t last!

NAP Program Highlights:

  • The NAP Tax Credit = 65% of the value of the donation.
  • For individuals, acceptable forms of donations are cash (check or credit card), or marketable securities.
  • There is a five-year carry forward for NAP Tax Credits. (To note, the tax credit for the current year is utilized first prior to using the credit that has been carried forward from a preceding taxable year.)

How do NAP (Neighborhood Assistance Program) Tax Credits Work?

  • The NAP Tax Credits are used on Virginia State Income Taxes.
  • Donations can be made by individuals, businesses, or trusts as long as the donation is for the educational services that Peter Paul provides.
  • Please return the Tax Credit Request Form (make sure you sign it!) with your donation to Peter Paul within 40 days of the date of the donation.

Call or email the philanthropy office at ahurt@peterpaulrva.org or (804) 780-1195 to learn about this 65% state tax credit

A Season Of Gratitude

A huge thank you to all who donated to this year's Thanksgiving Box Program! With the support of our community, we were able to provide 188 boxes to Peter Paul families and East End neighbors. Whether you donated as an individual or through your organization, we greatly appreciate your support!

Last week, our Education Team recently hosted a Thanksgiving dinner and showcase of student art! They also honored Ms. La’Angela Wood for 3 years of service as a Peter Paul teacher and shared reflections on what they were grateful for. Dinner was prepared by Chef Keonne Lomax!

Staying Connected

Check out these pics of previous staff members, board members, and longtime volunteers who support our students through class sponsorships! Our sponsors have completed several hands-on activities with our students since the beginning of the academic year.

They plan to return in December to provide and help our students build gingerbread houses to celebrate the holidays. Thank you for staying connected and for all you do!

Garden Club

This past Thursday, our garden club, led by Mr. Harvey, harvested vegetables from our children’s garden! The students had a chance to taste and take home vegetables to cook with their families!

Our garden program has been a pillar of our after-school program, and we are so thankful to our volunteers who have supported and help maintain the garden over the years.

Anti-Bully Pledge

In honor of Anti-Bullying awareness month, Peter Paul teacher, Mr. Fred, leads our students in a deep conversation about bullying and how they can serve as advocates in identifying and preventing bullying in the various aspects of their lives. Each student read and signed an anti-bullying pledge located in our education wing and looks forward to continuing conversations on a topic that heavily influences the lives of our youth.

Thank You, Capital One

Capital One will be hosting the Capital One Coders program with our students this upcoming month, where they will be facilitating a condensed Web Development curriculum. During the program, technologists will introduce two coding languages used frequently in web development. Students will learn about HTML, the skeleton of a website, and CSS, the code that makes a website look great. Thank you, Capital One!

We will miss you, Joy!

This week we're saying "see you later" to our Philanthropy Coordinator, Joy Gilchrist, who will be transitioning from her role at Peter Paul. Joy has done a fantastic job leading our volunteer program and will surely be missed. Congrats on your new position, and best of luck on your journey!

Current volunteers who work with our students can reach out to Terrell Nichols or Alison Owens in the interim. Other volunteering questions can be directed to the Director of Philanthropy, Anne Hurt.

Lunch and Learns are back!

Come join us for a walk-thru of the Coleman Promise Center as we share information and awareness about opportunities to engage with us, as well as updates on our programs.

Lunch and Learns are held every 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month. This is a unique opportunity for you to speak with Peter Paul's staff, as well as our Executive Director, Damon Jiggetts, about the exciting things happening now and in the future.

We invite you to grab a few of your coworkers, friends, or family members to join us and register here. Please email Anne Hurt with any questions. See you all soon!
