The Messenger of St. Mark's | Epiphany | January 4, 2024

For your thought:

On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.  --Matthew 2:11

This Sunday: Feast of the Epiphany & Party

The Feast of the Epiphany (celebrated Sunday, January 7 at St. Mark's) honors the story - in the gospel of Matthew - of the three kings' visit to Jesus. They bestowed gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

The first day of the Epiphany season, also happens to be the first day of the Mardi Gras season, which precedes Lent. King Cake is a New Orleans tradition that dates back to the 1870s. The cake is colorful and typically has a plastic baby Jesus inside. The cake is shared by all, but the person who discovers the small plastic baby in one of the king cakes will become one of the Magi for the day, or wise ones, and be asked to offer a simple toast in the Parish Hall.

Also, there’ll be a scavenger hunt around the church to locate a doll baby Jesus.

Come to worship this Sunday, then enjoy the Feast of the Epiphany -- St. Mark's style. This joyous event will occur in the Parish Hall after the liturgy concludes. It is sure to be a time cherished by all, and all ages.

Outreach: Collecting Warm Items for Those in Need

Collecting Warm Items for our Neighbors at the International District Library

St. Mark’s is again collecting items to keep warm – this time for our neighbors seeking help at the International District Public Library. The most needed items are sweatpants, jackets, sweaters, and blankets. They can also use hats, scarves, and socks. Please bring NEW or very gently used items to the bin in the narthex.

Please contact Deacon David (via email here) if you have any questions or would like to donate money and have us do the shopping.

Starts Tuesday: Midweek Morning Prayer & Yoga

In Stoney Chapel (or Zoom), join Mother Sylvia throughout the Season of Epiphany (Beginning January 9th, ending February 13th) in person or online via zoom or Facebook Tues/Wed/Thurs at 7am Mountain Time for an abbreviated service of sung morning prayer followed by 20-30 minutes of gentle yoga/stretching/movement practice. Feel free to participate and adjust or adapt the prayers and/or movement practice to fit your schedule and needs. Please bring your own yoga mat and alert Mother Sylvia in advance if you are sensitive to incense. You may also follow along on Zoom here. Here's the link to the "Order of Worship" for Morning Prayer.

Take Home Your Kitchen Items, Please!

St. Mark’s kitchen is overflowing with serving bowls, platters and other items in which parishioners have shared food and treats. Please take them home. There will be a table at the entry doors this Sunday, January 7, with everything placed on it. If you will not be at church this week and know you have a serving piece you’d like back, contact Deacon David (via email here) at and he’ll hold it back for you.

Please Return Advent Wreath Frames

Please return your wire Advent Wreath frames to the collection bin in the narthex. We will use them again next year. Thank you.

Please contact Deacon David (via email here) if you have any questions.
