Our Gallery of Flags

The Gallery of Flags is an idea that grew out of our Let’s Start Here initiative, which is college-wide focus on increasing diversity, equity and inclusion on our campus. In the fall of 2021, the DEI Advisory Council approved the idea to hang flags in our A Building atrium to represent the various countries of origin for our engineering faculty, students and staff. In May 2022, the idea came to fruition. These flags represent not only the countries that produced our scholars and community members, but also our institution’s commitment to recognizing, celebrating and welcoming people from all corners of the globe. The cultures and civilizations reflected in these many colors matter to us. They are the foundation on which our college—and academia—is built. Find your country of origin in these flags and proudly share it with others. Our intention is to update the display annually with new flags as needed.

Once you’re on campus and can see the full display, let us know if the flag of your birth country should be added to our spring refresh.

Mental health help for Engineering student -
FAMU students – have access to FAMU’s in-person counselors on the main campus during office hours and self-directed help via the WellTrack website or app. To schedule a counseling session in the office, call (850) 599-3145. Students who would like to speak with a counselor after hours can do so free with WellConnect at (833) 848-1765.
FSU students - have access to FSU’s tele-mental health treatment options via Zoom (HIPAA link) as well as FSU’s after-hours crisis hotline. To initiate these services, just call 850-644-TALK(8255) during office hours (8-4pm) for tele-mental health services, and at any other time for crisis services.

Let's Start Here
Interested in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion work at Engineering?
On behalf of Interim Dean Alvi, everyone in our FAMU-FSU Engineering community is invited to join our diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) efforts at the college. This past year, our Let’s Start Here (LSH) Leadership Committee began this work in earnest for our faculty, students and staff. We are currently accepting volunteer interest in serving on the newly-formed Engineering DEI Advisory Council, which will pick up where the LSH committee left off.
 
In addition to the DEI Advisory Council, there are myriad other ways to get involved in creating a college culture that is more inclusive, offers equal opportunities for all and celebrates the diversity on our campus. There’s something for anyone who is interested in this important work. Please take a moment to complete this form if you are interested in joining us.

Automation Device to Save Natural Resources in Developing Countries Wins Entrepreneurial Prize

Muhammad Fasih Waheed is working towards his doctorate in electrical engineering at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering and sees the “big” picture globally. Especially when it comes to access to water and electricity. His invention TankiMatic took the grand prize of $1,000 in the 2022 Seminole Innovators Shark Tank Competition.

“I am from Karachi, Pakistan, and like many developing countries, basic necessities like water and electricity shortages are a common problem,” Waheed said, “Billions of gallons of water and electricity are wasted because people forget to turn off their water pump. It was even a problem in my own neighborhood, so I came up with the idea of automating the process as a solution.”

Waheed’s invention, TankiMatic, is a wireless device that automates the process of filling a water tank. It costs less than $15 for the consumer. When the water runs out of the consumer’s water tank, TankiMatic automatically turns on the water motor. When the tank is full the water motor shuts off.
