A Reflection Between Terms
I’ve always had fun living at and attending ASMS, but as I (and other students) have learned, Winter Term is always stressful. There are more breaks and national events, so teachers always have to fit in lots of learning, assignments, and tests all into a seemingly smaller amount of time. This, along with non-academic events and other winter gatherings leads to a balancing act for students and staff alike.

However, as we finish Winter Term and move into Spring term, there is always much to look forward to. We have new classes, Special Projects, Prom, and finally, Mardi Gras! I’ve waited the last 2 years of the pandemic for Mardi Gras to come back, and I think we should all be more excited about it!

Going into Spring Term, I think we should all take the mindset to be excited for what is to come. The times are changing, and there is not always something we can do about it, so let's take this time to simply be excited!

Microsoplastics and You

Day 1. Included a crash course in Microplastics and two awesome guest speakers. Jessi James, a graduate student at Mississippi State, who talked about her recent microplastics sampling trip across the Gulf of Mexico, and Olivia Lestrade, a fisheries technician in the Center for Fisheries Research and Development at Gulf Coast Research Lab, who spoke about her research investigating microplastic distribution in sargassum fish and the impacts on their microbiota.

Day 2. Dr. Ortell and Dr. Domangue brought sand and water from two different beaches, Mississippi and Dauphin Island, to investigate and compare the microplastics between each location. In the morning students worked in four groups to sample our "Bedsole Lawn Beaches" and then started processing samples using the density separator for the sand samples and a vacuum pump to filter the water. Tomorrow they will start analyzing their samples using microscopy

Sand is processed for microplastics using the density separator (the big PVC tube in the pics) and water is processed with a vacuum pump. Plastics are counted under the microscope. The third picture is what plastic fibers looks like!
