Hingham Congregational Church,
United Church of Christ
Annual Finance Meeting Sunday
January 30, 2022
10 a.m.
Welcoming Covenant
In the name of God and Jesus Christ, the Hingham Congregational Church welcomes all who seek to know and worship God, and invites everyone to join in our mission through participation and leadership of the congregation.
As a community of faith, we take seriously the biblical call to love God and our neighbors as ourselves, and recognize that, although we are many members, we are one.
❖ We celebrate the uniqueness of everyone.
❖ We rejoice in our diversity of views and understandings of our shared faith.
❖ We affirm relationships based on love, commitment, and mutual respect.
❖ As is stated in our by-laws, we strive for righteousness, justice and peace.
It is with this spirit and the love of God that we openly welcome all persons, inclusive of every race, ethnicity, class, age, gender, physical or mental ability, sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression, and inclusive of any others, to journey with us as we move forward with the work of this church in the world.

Welcome and Announcements
Opening Prayer (unison)
God of the Cosmos, you are everywhere, beyond us and yet deep within each one of us. We often think too much or too little of ourselves. Please open our hearts to your compassion and wisdom for us and for all creation. We pray for perspective, for confidence in your love, and for humility...
(silence)
*Lord’s Prayer
Our Father* who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
*Please feel free to pray as you wish. We respect tradition — and we welcome images of the Divine that are diverse and inclusive.

Praise to the living God, the God of love and light, Whose
word brought forth the myriad suns and set the worlds in flight;
Whose infinite design, which we but dimly see, Per-
vades all nature, making all a cosmic unity.
Praise to the living God, from whom all things derive, Whose
Spirit formed upon this sphere the first faint seeds of life;
Who caused them to evolve, unwitting, toward God’s goal, Till
humankind stood on the earth, as living, thinking souls.
Praise to the living God, who knows our joy and pain, Who
shares with us our common life, the sacred and profane.
God toils where-e’er we toil, in home and mart and mill; And
Deep with-in the human heart God leads us forward still.
Praise to the living God, around, within, above, Be-
yond the grasp of human mind, but whom we know as love.
In these tumultuous days, so full of hope and strife, May
we bear witness to the Way, O source and Goal of life.

Ministry of the Word
Scripture Reading:
| |
|
|
The Beginning of the Galilean Ministry
Then Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and a report about him spread through all the surrounding country. He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by everyone.
The Rejection of Jesus at Nazareth
When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written:
‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.’
And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he began to say to them, ‘Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.’ All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They said, ‘Is not this Joseph’s son?’ He said to them, ‘Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, “Doctor, cure yourself!” And you will say, “Do here also in your home town the things that we have heard you did at Capernaum.” ’ And he said, ‘Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in the prophet’s home town. But the truth is, there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up for three years and six months, and there was a severe famine over all the land; yet Elijah was sent to none of them except to a widow at Zarephath in Sidon.There were also many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.’ When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with rage. They got up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they might hurl him off the cliff. But he passed through the midst of them and went on his way.
This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!

Teach Me, O Lord, Your Holy Way
|
Teach me, O Lord, your holy way,
and give me an obedient mind.
That in your service I may find
my heart's delight from day to day.
Help me, O Savior, here to trace
the sacred foot steps you have trod;
and fully trusting in my God,
to grow in goodness, truth, and grace.
Guardme, O Christ, that I may ne'er
forsake the right, or do the wrong;
Against temptation make me strong,
and keep me in your sheltering care.
Bless me in every task I face,
begun, continued, done for you:
Fulfill your will in all I do.
and grant me your abundant grace.

SUNDAY SCHOOL UPDATE
This week our Bible story touches on two important lessons; standing up for what you know to be fair and true, and what it means to not feel included. Jesus teaches us about the importance of showing love to those who do not feel included, and at the same time standing up for those who are marginalized. This is a good introduction to an ongoing conversation kids will have about these topics. Let’s encourage our kids to follow Jesus’s teachings about sharing God’s love. Join us on zoom this Sunday. Please bring paper, pencil, scissors, and crayons or markers to craft with. Be well, Miss Jen

Jr. Choir in January - Pause in Live Singing
It looks like the Jr. Choir will need to postpone our 2022 rehearsal startup until sometime in the (hopefully near) future. With HCC worship going on-line for the coming weeks, we will once again have an opportunity to sing along and record at home with the idea that we will create an audio/visual presentation of a song or two that would become part of our church family’s worship experience. Those of you already on the Jr. Choir e-mail list, be on the lookout for an e-mail that includes a song and directions for singing and recording at home. If you are not on the list but are interested in joining in our upcoming songs, please e-mail Mr. B. at jeeko@comcast.net. to be included

GREEN TIP OF THE WEEK: GREENWASHING
Here is a term with which we should all familiarize ourselves. Many companies, businesses & brands advertise being “green” and offer products that are “environmentally” friendly. (From the Global Citizen website:) “While this is a great step forward, it’s not all good news. Branding something as eco-friendly, sustainable, vegan, or green does not mean that it always is. Greenwashing is a phenomenon that several corporations have participated in, whether knowingly or unknowingly. What is greenwashing? It falls into the space between labelling something as good for the environment, and it actually being good for the environment.”….The products we purchase…have almost all had their effect on the environment, so it makes sense that “climate-action-chic” is the new generational trend.” Remember- it’s advertising - trying to sell you something!
For more information on GREENWASHING, either Google it or check out this website - one of many - educating us about this phenomenon.
