Dear Gesu Families,

The start of the third quarter brings excitement into our classrooms as students are introduced to new skills and explore new concepts. Below you will find brief overviews of what students will be introduced to this quarter in each content area. We are looking forward to seeing the personal growth of each student. Thank you for your continued partnership as we truly are one proud Gesu family.

Grade 1 Curriculum
Quarter 3
Religion
Students will prepare for the season of Lent and learn about the miracles that Jesus performed and the parables that he told to help us love and respect one another.
Reading, Writing, and Phonics
Students will practice decoding skills and oral reading fluency. They will also continue to practice comprehension skills and using the conventions of English while writing complete sentences. 
Math
Students will explore the relationship between addition and subtraction, identify place value and build measurement skills. They will continue to practice basic addition and subtraction facts. 
Science
Students will be introduced to the water cycle and how it relates to preserving our natural resources.
Social Studies
Students will be introduced to famous Americans who have worked for peace and justice in our world. They will work on a PBL about currency and how people are chosen to be represented on money.
Art
Students will explore drawing in cartoon style as inspired by Ed Emberley’s Art Alphabet. Students will also be introduced to painting resist after reading “Harold and the Purple Crayon.”
Music
Students will be introduced to AB musical form, quarter notes and rests. They will practice distinguishing beat versus rhythm. 
Spanish
Students will continue to practice vocabulary related to parts of the body and clothing. 
Technology
Students will continue to practice digital citizenship in addition to basic block coding programs. Students will be introduced to hands-on work with various robots and technology tools. 
Library
Students will listen to and reflect on stories about winter, penguins, unlikely friendships and classic/reimagined fairy tales. 
Physical Education
Students will practice and demonstrate locomotor and non-locomotor skills in a variety of ways.
