Each day we renew our commitment to sustainability and decarbonization efforts. Since the building systems we design contribute to carbon emissions, directly impacting the Earth and its climate, we must remain vigilant and do our part to mitigate emissions as much as possible. In joining Carbon Leadership Forum’s MEP 2040 Challenge, we have pledged to advocate for and achieve net zero carbon in our projects – operational carbon by 2030 and embodied carbon by 2040.

As a first step towards honoring that commitment, we developed an in-house tool to help our engineers quickly analyze the operational carbon impact of various building heating strategies on every applicable project. This analysis informs our clients on the carbon impact over the building's lifespan. Our efforts also include two public web-based tools that were developed in response to building emissions legislation passed in New York City and Boston. These tools – the NYC LL97 Carbon Emissions Calculator and the BERDO 2.0 Calculator – help highlight and reduce carbon by allowing users to input annual utility information and building characteristics, then generate emission thresholds and estimated penalties based on carbon standards.

We continue to pledge our technical expertise to achieving net zero carbon, to educating others, and to helping our clients think differently about the way buildings are designed.
AKF values continuous learning opportunities as they fuel our knowledge of industry trends and stimulate our creativity for providing the best engineering solutions for our projects. We look forward to connecting with clients and colleagues at the following conferences:

New York, NY - April 26

Roanoke, VA - May 8 - 11.
Shannon Kaplan presenting "Healthcare Design and Decarbonization: Can They Coexist?".

San Francisco, CA - June 7-10. Jeff Rios presenting "Decarbonizing Historic Landmarked Skyscrapers: Challenges & Rewards".

Stay tuned for upcoming events and speaking engagements; we are excited to connect with you!
We’re proud to share that Jeff Rios has been included in Crains NY’s list of Notable Leaders in Sustainability! Jeff was recognized for his leadership of AKF’s Energy + Performance team and his commitment to reducing NYC’s carbon footprint.

Congratulations to Charlie
Marino who was appointed a Vice President of the New York
Energy Consumers Council (NYECC).

Jake Canale and Grace Kolb presented their paper "Energy Recovery Systems in Life Science and Healthcare Applications" at the ASHRAE Winter Conference.
