Chapter 5: The Pit of Despair

Sit Down Before Reading Cover.png

Sit Down Before Reading is an epic medical memoir unlike any you've ever read. This unbelievable story of stories is unfolding in near real time. That means the conclusion of this tale isn't written yet... because it hasn't happened yet. The story I'm telling will challenge the medical establishment to reexamine life with a debilitating disease, send reverberating shockwaves throughout the disabled community, rewrite the rulebook of healthcare (God willing), and potentially change your entire future. I recommend you buckle up and hang on, it’s going to be one hell of a rip-roaring ride. A new chapter releases every Wednesday here:

David, I think you would agree with my anti-catheter preference, especially given the length of catheters for dudes. To my untrained eye, they look to be five, six feet long, something that could lasso a horse or hogtie a pair of criminals. So, in an effort to cut the awkward tension during that eye-opening first cathing lesson I took last year, I opened my mouth to tell a raft of inappropriate male anatomy jokes that were flooding my brain at the time. But before I could speak, my pants were off, my member was out, my hands and privates were sterilized, and the lesson had begun, and you can read all about it. Chapter 5: Pit of Despair releases today along with a preview for Chapter 6. Below is the direct link to the home page of Sit Down Before Reading: A Memoir where all available chapters are displayed. BONUS CONTENT: Official Book Cover!

The official book cover for SDBR is finalized! It was designed and illustrated by up-and-coming artist Marigold Kitzmiller, an undergrad at the prestigious art school Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. A fellow artist reviewed her work and came away duly impressed.… “The mixed-case title font is suspenseful and looks like it betrays a secret, like a handwritten diary. The white text on the black background feels serious, and the warm orange seems to promise something positive in the end.” Positive, indeed. View the book cover in high-res.

Laura Rhino.JPG

This is the final repeat of chapters sent previously to members, and this one remains largely unchanged from the previous version. Largely. There are extra images that were newly added to round out the story (but not Laura petting a rhino, so I included it here) and the ending was tweaked to better reflect what is in store. If your finger is in a cast and you have frustratingly been unable to click the link to read the last two sentences of the chapter, I’m reprinting them here.

“In just days, the abject horror of being stuck at the bottom of a latrine for days would sound refreshingly preferable as Laura and I unknowingly were about to enter the most terrifying time of our lives. For cloaked in dazzling, distracting sequins—his hot breath singeing away any kindling of hope, his curled tail methodically sweeping away its last vestiges—lurked the devil.”

Yup, it’s gonna get hairy. Think a cross between a Wookiee and painter Bob Ross of PBS fame. That hairy. Be active, stay fit, and keep exploring!

Sincerely,

Dave Bexfield

p.s. If you heard whoops and hollers of excitement emanating out of Albuquerque recently, don’t be alarmed. That was just me finding another important puzzle piece as I continue to unravel one of MS’s greatest mysteries.
