Happy New Year 2024 from Tonari Gumi!

What a year it’s been at Tonari Gumi. Our financial donors and many dedicated volunteers have made it possible for us to offer powerful support programs and community-building events to our Japanese community. For this, we are truly grateful. The coming year will be significant for Tonari Gumi as we will enter our 50th year of service. There will be a gala event in October 2024 to mark this milestone and we hope you will join us in this celebration.

Tonari Gumi, also known as the Japanese Community Volunteers Association, began in 1974, offering companionship, translation services and obento lunches to seniors isolated in the Powell Street area and struggling with the post-war effects of relocation. While our community demographic has changed over the years, the heart of Tonari Gumi is still the same - service to our community through volunteerism. In fact, many seniors themselves are now among our volunteers, from ‘junior seniors’ in their sixties all the way to ‘senior seniors’ in their nineties. We encourage you to explore our wonderful programs and TG activities and to also consider volunteering with us.

A-pre-she-ate:

a Story of Appreciation

As my father became frail, he could no longer be the first one stepping up to volunteer. Instead, he became a recipient. He was shy about asking for services or support, so his friends reached out to Tonari Gumi. Volunteers from Meals on Wheels were soon dropping by to deliver lunches and have a nice chat. Even when he was in extended care, Tonari Gumi was there for the in-house Wednesday lunch and activities program. My father was able to thank his Japanese helpers, but we had to coach him for his non-Japanese caregivers. We would say, “Dad, tell them you appreciate them!” And so he did, referring to a piece of paper on which he had carefully written ‘a-pre-she-ate’ so he would say it correctly.

Since Dad’s passing, we, his daughters, have been showing our heartfelt appreciation by giving back to Tonari Gumi. This is an organization that makes a real difference in the Japanese community.

Looking forward to our 50th year, the Board of Directors and staff of Tonari Gumi extend our best wishes for your health, happiness and prosperity in 2024.

隣組より　2024年明けましておめでとうございます

新年のご挨拶

昨年は隣組にとって、素晴らしい年でした。隣組にご寄付してくださる方々、そしてたくさんの献身的なボランティアのみなさまのおかげで、日系社会にしっかりした支援プログラムと、コミュニティをつなぐ様々なイベントを提供することが出来ました。これも一重にみなさまからの温かい支援の賜物と、心より感謝申し上げます。

そして2024年は、隣組50周年という大きな節目の年です。10月には隣組創立５０周年記念祝賀会を行なう予定ですので、ぜひご参加ください。

隣組（英語名：Japanese Community Volunteers Association）は、1974年にスタートしました。当初はパウエル・ストリート地域で孤立し、戦後もつづいた強制移動の影響に苦しんでいたシニアに、交流の場を設けるとともに、翻訳やお弁当ランチのサービスを提供していました。

それから長い年月を経て、日系社会の様相は変わりましたが、隣組の心は今も同じです。それはボランティアを通して、コミュニティに貢献することです。

隣組では今、多くのシニアたち、60代の「若いシニア」から90代の「年長シニア」が、現役ボランティアとして活動しています。みなさまにも、私たちの素晴らしいプログラムや活動をご覧いただき、さらにボランティアとして参加することをお考えいただければと思います。

アプリシエイト：感謝のものがたり

私の父が年を取り、体力的にも衰えてしまった頃の話です。彼はもうボランティアとして活躍することはできなくなり、ボランティアをしてもらう側となりました。

ですが父は、サービスを利用したりサポートを頼むのが苦手でした。そこで父の友達が隣組に問い合わせたのです。すると、すぐに「Meals on Wheels」のボランティアの人たちがやってきて、ランチを届けるとともに、父とおしゃべりをしてくれました。その後、父はケア施設に入りましたが、施設内で水曜日に行われる隣組のランチとアクティビティには参加することが出来ました。

父は、日本人には「ありがとう」と言いましたが、日本人ではないケアギバーに対しては言えませんでした。

「お父さん、ケアギバーさんに感謝してるって言わないと！」

私たちに言われ、父は、そうしました。自分で「アプリシエイト」と一生懸命書いたメモを見ながら。

父が亡くなってから、娘の私たちは、隣組にお返しをすることで、心からの感謝を表しています。日系社会に真に変化をもたらす組織、それが隣組です。

来たる50周年を前に、隣組理事会とスタッフ一同、2024年におけるみなさまのご健康とご多幸、一層のご繁栄をお祈り申し上げます。

TG iPad/iPhone Class

For our beginners' iPad/iPhone classes, we provide clear and easy-to-understand instructions covering the basics to advanced aspects of smartphones and tablets. In this small-group setting, you can easily ask questions and learn in a friendly and cheerful atmosphere, discovering the fun of digital technology together. With a touch of humour, we will explore the world of technology in an enjoyable way. The explanation by our long-time volunteer instructor, Eri Nakano, is clear and thorough. This is a highly popular program.

TG iPad/iPhoneクラス

初心者向けのiPad / iPhoneクラスでは、スマートフォンやタブレットの基本から応用まで、わかりやすく説明します。少人数制で質問しやすく、笑顔あふれる雰囲気で学ぶことができるこのクラスで、デジタルの楽しさを一緒に発見しましょう。ユーモアも交えながら、テクノロジーの世界を楽しく探索していきます。

長年ボランティア講師をして頂いている中野えり先生の説明はわかりやすく丁寧で、このクラスはとても人気のあるプログラムです

New Year Lunch with “Gaji” and Bingo!

　Date: Saturday, January 20

　Time: 12:00-3:00pm

　(Doors open at 11:30a.m.)

　Fees: $5 will be collected at the door.

We need 6-7 assistants who would be willing to help us make a Japanese lunch, including tonjiru (pork and vegetable miso-soup) and a few kinds of onigiri. If you can help, please contact Yuko.

MERRY CHRISTMAS 2023!

From our hearts to yours

Good food, good company and much enthusiasm. A lively mix of participants joined together to celebrate the Christmas season at Tonari Gumi on December 8th.

As Masters of Ceremonies, Rie and Mayumi guided us through a program that included addresses by both our TG Board of Directors Chair and our Executive Director. This was followed by a joyful singalong of Christmas Carols in both Japanese and English led by Yasuko Tamazaki with Azusa Blake on the piano. On this special occasion, we were honoured to host Consul General Maruyama and Consul Ishiura, who greeted us with kind words and led the kanpai toast leading in to a lovely lunch of bentos from Aburi Market. A laughter-filled session of Janken in which winners received surprise gifts was enjoyed by all.

As we say farewell to 2023, let us be grateful for opportunities to connect with old friends, make new friends and celebrate our community together.

メリークリスマス

２０２３！

おいしい食事と楽しい仲間との弾む会話。去る12月8日（金）、隣組にてクリスマスシーズンを祝うために７０名ほどが集いました。

スタッフのリエさんとマユミさんが司会進行をする中、隣組理事長と事務局長の両名からの挨拶でクリスマスパーティが幕を開けました。山崎康子さんの素晴らしい歌声とブレイクあずささんの軽快なピアノ演奏によるクリスマスソングの演奏に続き、参加者のみなさんと日本語と英語のクリスマスキャロルの合唱を楽しみました。この特別な日に、在バンクーバー日本国総領事丸山浩平氏と領事の石浦氏をお迎えし、心あたたまる言葉でのご挨拶と、乾杯の音頭をとっていただきました。続くランチでは、炙りマーケットの素敵なお弁当を満喫し、全員で楽しんだジャンケン大会では、勝者がサプライズのギフトを受け取り、笑いに満ちたひと時となりました。

2023年に別れを告げるにあたり、長年の友達と繋がり、新しい友達を作り、共にコミュニティを祝う機会を持てたことを皆さんと一緒に感謝したいと思います。

Meals on Wheels Service News

The last day of Meals on Wheels service is December 19, 2023.

The service will resume on January 9, 2024.

The price will remain at $7/meal for Tonari Gumi members, and $8/meal for non-members.

Looking for pairs comprising of a 60+ year old participant and a person they feel close to who is 18+ years old. Attend two zoom meetings, complete short questionnaires and wear a physical activity monitor for 10 days.
