A Message to our Community Members

As we kick off Black History Month, we want to acknowledge the African American community members that make our work possible. The many residents, educators, providers, and organizers that have supported our work have allowed us to sustain our goal of uplifting and empowering our community. We are committed to continuing to offer resources to the Black community in order to bridge the gap between academia and the needs of our community. This month we plan on continuing to show up for the community by promoting various health fairs, food distributions, and other outreach events. We will remain open to growing and learning from the people that we’re serving!

Community Member Spotlight

South Los Angeles Promotora: Denise Serrette

Since 2015, Denise has been employed by Para Los Niños working in Community Transformation on the promotora team for Best Start Region 1. She helped create and continues to support the Neighborhood Leadership Group called the Universal Dream Team, a diverse team of community residents and partners in Koreatown and South Los Angeles. The group is one of the eight Neighborhood Leadership Groups located in the area of Los Angeles. She also collaborates with other community partnerships of Best Start Region 1.

In 2013, after working many years in television production, she began seeking a new career path where she could be more involved in the community. Denise enrolled in and graduated from the Esperanza Community Housing's Promotores De Salud program where she immediately began working with the outreach team.

Denise’s community service work, advocacy, and experience started at St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in South Los Angeles. As the church council's vice president, she has had the pleasure of serving at a multicultural congregation by producing media and coordinating various activities, fundraisers, and outreach programs for seniors, youth, and young adults in the neighborhood. Her motto is “I believe in life-long learning, mentoring, and developing various skills to improve and enjoy all chapters of my life”. She is a graduate of the University of Southern California with a bachelor's in Cinema/Television Production.

Connect with her on the Best Start Metro LA Facebook page or via email at Dserrette@paralosninos.org.

Family Enrichment Program

The goal of the Family Enrichment Program is to advance the development and kindergarten readiness of children 0-3 years of age while developing parents’/caregivers’ education and abilities as their child’s first teacher by:

1) providing a high quality parent/caregiver and child learning environment

2) improving the development of children

3) improving parenting skills, knowledge of child and brain development, and building social connections of parents/caregivers.

The program offers bi-weekly classes for parents and children to support and strengthen families.

The Family Enrichment Community Program (FECP) is a volunteer-led program whose purpose is to enrich parent and child interaction. Parents who have participated in the center-based family enrichment program are recruited to become Parent Facilitators. Parent Facilitators undergo a three-month core training covering: Child Development, CPR, Protective Factors, Leadership skills, and Lesson Planning. Additionally, Parent Facilitators also attend ongoing monthly workshops and support meetings. FECP Groups meet once a week for a duration of two hours. Each group is composed of children ages 0-5 years.

Stir Fry Cauliflower

This cauliflower stir fry is fast and easy to make! On its own, it works as a side dish but eat it with a plant-based protein and it’s an easy dinner. The main thing to note is that cauliflower requires much more time to stir fry than other veggies, so you’ll need to add it to the pan first. Here are the basic ingredients you’ll need for this stir fry:

  • Cauliflower
  • Bell peppers
  • White onion
  • Green onions
  • Stir fry sauce: rice vinegar, soy sauce, miso, gochujang (optional), sugar, sesame oil, and cornstarch.

Nutrition note: This recipe uses 2 bell peppers along with the cauliflower. 1 medium red bell pepper provides 169% of your daily vitamin C, so using 2 knocks this vitamin off the charts.

Cauliflower

Cauliflower is one of several vegetables in the species Brassica oleracea in the genus Brassica, which is in the Brassicaceae (or mustard) family. It is an annual plant that reproduces by seed. Typically, only the head is eaten – the edible white flesh is sometimes called "curd" (with a similar appearance to cheese curd). The cauliflower head is composed of a white inflorescence meristem. Cauliflower heads resemble those in broccoli, which differs in having flower buds as the edible portion.

VaccinateLA Campaign

VaccinateLA is a joint effort between the University of Southern California (USC), multiple hospitals, and the community. This campaign works to make access to COVID vaccines fast and easy for every Angeleno. We provide you and your family with resources, such as interviews with experts, to help you make the best choice for your health.
