Happy New Year, Tutors!

Achieving literacy in English is essential for integrating into the community, being able to complete basic daily living tasks, making new friends, and seeking employment.

As tutors, we want to support our students' sense of social and psychological well-being.

It is important that we see what our students bring to their tutoring sessions – wisdom, perseverance, courage -- not only what they lack, such as English and formal schooling.

Thank you for the understanding, empathy, and patience that you demonstrate working with your student every week.

With gratitude and hope,

Teaching Tips

Here are some materials to use with low-literacy-level students:

  • The ESL Story Bank is a collection of short stories, by level, written specifically for adult ESL learners.

  • Making It Real: Teaching Pre-literate Adult Refugee Students: Where and how do you start teaching these learners? What do you need to teach them? What do they need and want to know? This book attempts to answer these questions and reviews some effective practices for teaching pre-literate adult refugees. (116 pages)
