From the President:
Spring is really here; now I am spending a lot of time weeding and organizing my garden. But I still find a little time for quilting!
I am looking forward to gaining a skill or two in Lisa Walton’s upcoming workshop on fusing in June.

I am happy to report that temporary Treasurer, Sherrie Moomey, has found a simpler program for the Treasurer to use. So the role of Treasurer has been simplified!! Remember that soon we will be needing to find volunteers to fill the following jobs that keep our Guild going: President Elect, Treasurer, Treasurer Elect, Program Elect, Publicity, Newsletter….
I would really appreciate it if you would volunteer for one of these positions! Just give me a call….. Board meetings will continue to be Zoom meetings!
Hopefully we will be able to see each other in person again!

Some members have asked for more information on photographing your work. We have created a Tip List to help guide you toward feeling more confident about this skill that is so very important for all artists. If you have further questions or concerns, please contact Jill Hoddick.
Tips for Photographing Art submissions for the CFG Website
- Follow directions; ask questions: Contact Jill Hoddick hoddick@up.edu
STAGE
- Use a solid color white, black, or other neutral background which contrasts with your subject: Avoid props or artsy backgrounds.
- Avoid shadows and glare: Subject should be evenly lit with strong, diffused light.
PROPS
- No visible hands, fingers, feet, clips, pins or hangers holding flat subjects (quilts, scarves, etc.).
- Garments are 3D and should be presented on a mannequin, dress form, head form or stand, hanger, or model: Model must not detract from art subject.
- Mount camera on a tripod if you have one.
FOCUS
- Be aware of location of camera eye relative to subject - align camera with center of subject.

Exception: Some 3D pieces may benefit from odd angle shots (hats, vessels).
- Avoid “selfies”.

Make your art the focus of the photo. Get as close to the subject as possible: Avoid capturing excess background.

Show all edges of the piece in the photo surrounded by a small amount of background. Crop photo (background) if necessary.
- In focus? Before you submit, upload the photo to your computer and zoom into at 100% view: Is it still in focus and shadow free?

Kathleen Roulet’s pieces Mosier Plateau View and Coloring the Gorge: Wild Lupine are two of the quilt-based artworks currently on display at the Discovery Center in The Dalles. This collection of “Gorge Impressions” by members of Beyond the Block: Art Quilters of the Gorge celebrates the sights and emotions experienced by those lucky enough to live along the river. Representational and abstract artworks depict iconic images of sunsets on the water, rugged cliffs, waterfalls and petroglyphs, and capture everything from the emotional terror of forest fire to the joy of sweeping meadows of wildflowers. The show is open April 10th through May 31st. The Discovery Center is located at 500 Discovery Drive, The Dalles, Oregon. Open daily 9am-5pm. A diGloria Richardson is thrilled to be one of two artists invited to display their work at the new Lincoln City Cultural Center Fiber Arts Studio Gallery. My co-artist is Jane Wilson who is a master with art gourds and coiling. Her free standing work compliments my fiber art pieces that are on the walls. Please come see this new venue and this exciting showing that runs through June 13th. The gallery is next door to the Chessman and is open currently from Thursday through Sunday.
We will also be participating in the Artist Studio Tour May 21-23.

Noelle Evans’s piece, “Clarity” sold from the SAQA Oregon Habitat exhibit while the Coos Art Museum hosted the exhibit from February 1 to April 10, 2021.

Karen Miller has had two quilts selected for Oregon State University’s annual traveling show Art About Agriculture. Fish Market and Farmer’s market are both whole cloth katazome. It begins at OSU June 5 and moves to the Chehalem Cultural Center later in the summer.

Prickly Pears is currently showing at the Keizer Police Department building having received the Juror’s Merit Award from the Keizer Art association in their recent virtual Orange show.

Sherrie Moomey
Milky Way, was juried into the Starry, Starry Night exhibit in Tubac. AZ. The exhibit is a national juried exhibition of artwork representing artists from 18 different states. The exhibit was inspired by and in support of the Tubac Dark Sky Initiative application by Tubac Heritage Alliance and Tubac Presidio State Park and Museum. The Jurors, Catherine Nash and Robert Renfrow selected 53 works of art from 191 submitted for consideration.
This piece sold during the exhibition. In addition, another piece from my Night Sky Series, Northern Lights, sold on the last day of the final venue for the High Fiber Diet Purple exhibit

Kathy will have her quilt “Z is For Zinnia, C is For Cosmos” at the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum in a show entitled “Here Come the Judges.” The show will be from July 19th through October 16th, 2021 in Golden, CO

Our speaker this month is Kristina Hodgetts. Kristina’s program is “Making a Flat Hat with flower decorations.”
She will show a video and discuss the supplies needed to make this type of hat.
Meetings will again be held virtually at Zoom café. Call in at 9:45-10:00 am and be ready to share the projects you've been working on for the last few months. The newsletter is published seven times a year: October, November, January, February, April, May and a combined issue in July/August.
