Board Brief
Dear Lovejoy Community:

The district’s communication plan includes updates regarding Board meetings. Following each meeting of the Board of Trustees, we share a recap of the evening’s events.

Following is the October 25, 2021 Board Brief:

The Board meeting was called to order at 5:00 PM with the Board retiring into Executive Session at 5:09 PM. Executive Session is a time where limited items such as personnel matters may be discussed. There are no votes taken in Executive Session. The Board entered into an Executive Session Personnel Hearing at 5:09 PM and closed the Executive Session Personnel Hearing at 5:43 PM. The Board Returned to Executive Session at 5:43 PM and recessed at 6:40 PM. The Board reconvened in Open Session at 7:03 PM.

The pledges were led by Puster Elementary School 3rd grader Sidra Khan.
The Board of Trustees and the Superintendent of Schools comprise the Team of Eight. The following members of the Team of Eight were present at the meeting.

The following New Hires were introduced:

  • Katie Kordel, Superintendent of Schools, introduced Kevin Parker as the Executive Director of Human Resources and Communications.
  • Dr. Jennifer DuPlessis, Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Operations, introduced Thomas Willman as the Senior Director of Financial Sustainability. 
  • Chris Mayfield, Principal of Lovejoy High School, introduced Chasidy Anderson as a Counselor at Lovejoy High School. 
  • Ray Winkler, Principal of Sloan Creek Intermediate School, introduced Jorge Jacquez as the School Marshal at Sloan Creek Intermediate School.

Katie Kordel, Superintendent of Schools, recognized campus principals for Principal Appreciation Month:

Each Board meeting has a time for Public Comments related to agenda items. There was one public comment related to agenda items:

  • Cheryl Anderson spoke in reference to Agenda Item 7, New Hires

Kevin Parker, Executive Director of Human Resources and Communications, presented Chasidy Anderson, Lovejoy High School Counselor, for consideration of approval as a new hire. The Board of Trustees unanimously approved Ms. Anderson.

The Board of Trustees approved the Consent Agenda which included the following items.

      
Katie Kordel, Superintendent of Schools, presented the following notification only items:


The Board of Trustees conducted a Board Hearing regarding the proposed mid-contract termination of the non-chapter 21 contract of Delene Lewis in Executive Session. The Board of Trustees approved the termination of Ms. Lewis during the Open Session.

Barrett Owens, Board President, opened the FIRST (Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas) hearing at 7:31 PM. Dr. Jennifer DuPlessis, Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Operations presented the FIRST Hearing. The presentation may be found here. There were no public comments related to the FIRST Hearing. Barrett Owens, Board President, closed the Hearing at 7:41 PM and resumed the regular meeting.

Dr. Jennifer DuPlessis, Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Operations, introduced Carl Deaton with Hankins, Eastup, Deaton and Tonn. Mr. Deaton presented the 2020-2021 Annual Independent Audit which may be found here. The Board of Trustees approved the 2020-2021 Annual Independent Audit.

Dr. Jennifer DuPlessis, Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Operations, presented playground equipment for the Carrie L. Lovejoy Child Development Center to the Board for consideration. The Board of Trustees approved the purchase of the playground equipment. The presentation may be found here.        
Katie Kordel, Superintendent of Schools, presented class size waivers for 4th Grade GT Math and 3rd Grade GT Math at Puster Elementary School. The Board of Trustees approved the waivers. Additional information may be found here.

Dr. Laurie Tinsley, Assistant Superintendent of Student Services presented the administration’s recommendation for the School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) which may be found here. The Board of Trustees approved the SHAC.
 
The Cabinet Reports were presented by:
 
  • Dr. Jennifer DuPlessis, Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Operations
  • Dr. Laurie Tinsley, Assistant Superintendent of Student Services

Katie Kordel, Superintendent of Schools, presented the Superintendent’s Report:

  • Very early on Friday morning, WFAA broadcasted their morning show from Leopard Stadium. The show featured Lovejoy High Cheer, Majestics, Acapella, Band and Guard. The students were very poised and shared their incredible skill sets in their areas of passion.

  • Mrs. Kordel will be holding important meetings with staff and parents regarding the characteristics of the next principal's of Willow Springs Middle School and Sloan Creek Intermediate School. Both principal positions have been posted.

There were no public comments related to agenda items.
