December 3 - December 12, 2021

In a special reception after the 11:00 AM service on Sunday, we are celebrating a transformative gift to Saint Paul's from Dr. and Mrs. Bleakley Chandler. Jane and Bleakley left their beautiful home to the church, for the proceeds to establish the Jane and Bleakley Chandler Endowment Fund. When it matures, this fund will support the mission of Saint Paul's and give special consideration to the work of Christ Church, right down the street from us.
The gift is a testament to the Chandlers' generosity, and to their vision and passion for the work of the Church in the world. It is also a testament to their relationship with the Reverend George Muir, recently retired from Saint Paul's. George's pastoral friendship with the Chandlers made this new fund possible. Parishioner Gardelle Lewis managed the sale of the house. After George's retirement, Senior Warden Ashley Wright oversaw the whole process and was the primary contact with the Chandler family. And so, the gift is a reminder to us that individual relationships of love and care can lead to large social impact. They can, in fact, change our lives, our churches, our neighborhoods, and the world. The process of selling the house and establishing the fund reminds us that all of our gifts and skills can be put to use for God's kingdom.
Accepting this gift is making a promise: of course that we'll be responsible stewards, but also that we are committed to bold ministry in the world. The Chandlers did not regularly attend Saint Paul's, but they saw in us a promise for transformative ministry. We'll keep that promise, with gratitude to all who made this fund possible, and for the glory of God. Join us Sunday to celebrate!

Sunday Forum
9:30 AM -10:30 AM, Berlin Room
|
This Sunday at 9:30 AM we will continue our journey through The Christian Year as we explore the Second and Third Sundays of Advent. On these Sundays, John the Baptist calls us to prepare the way of the Lord in our own hearts through repentance. “Repentance” is one of those Christian ideas that has become narrowly associated with a particular approach to Christian faith. What can it mean for us today? What role does it play in Advent at Saint Paul’s? All questions will, of course, be comprehensively answered.

Tuesday, December 14, 1 PM - 4:00 PM

At just the time when life becomes most hectic for many of us, the Church tells us to slow down, wait faithfully, and prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ. How can we wait while we run from appointment and errand to appointment and errand? This Advent at Saint Paul's, we'll hold three quiet (half-) days, to give us all a chance to take a breath and wait in the presence of God.
Join us on December 8, 9 AM - 12:30 PM and December 14, 1 - 4:30 PM. The quiet day on December 8 is sponsored by the Daughters of the King, and December 14 is a Blue Christmas themed quiet day, in special memory of Ramzi Assad and all the beloveds we have lost in the last year, is sponsored by EfM.

The Vestry Nominating Committee is seeking candidates whom you believe would make outstanding Vestry members for Saint Paul's. If you'd like to suggest someone, including yourself, please contact retiring Senior Warden Ashley Wright. Prior to nominating someone else, please discuss with them their interest and willingness to serve in this role.
VESTRY RESPONSIBILITIES
The basic responsibilities of the Vestry are:
- to help define and articulate the mission of this congregation
- to support the church's mission by word and deed
- to support the clergy in furthering the mission of Saint Paul’s
- to ensure effective organization and planning
- to manage resources and finances
- to attend monthly vestry meetings and annual vestry retreat
- to serve as liaison to assigned parish committees
We expect to elect for three full three-year terms and the remaining year of Matt Gullette’s unexpired term. If the new senior warden comes from the current vestry, we may have an additional unexpired term to fill.
MINIMUM CRITERIA
To be eligible for the Vestry, a nominee must answer "yes" to all of the following questions.
- Have you been confirmed or received in the Episcopal Church?
- Do you regularly attend worship services at Saint Paul's?
- Are you a pledging member of Saint Paul's?
CANDIDATE PROFILES
Each nominee slated to run for election to the Vestry will be invited to share a profile with the parish via our regular parish communications including the weekly newsletter.
A Note on Eligibility: It was recently brought to our attention that some of our election practices vary from what is required in the diocesan canons (church law in our diocese). Conversations with the Bishop’s staff have clarified the language that will bring our practices into alignment with diocesan canons. On page 19 of the attached Constitution and Canons, those eligible for election are those “confirmed adults in good standing eighteen years of age or older enrolled in the Congregation” (Canon 2.1). Those eligible to vote in an election are “those confirmed adults enrolled in the Congregation who are in good standing and who have reached the age of sixteen” (Canon 2.3). Those already in the process of being confirmed or received and otherwise eligible, are eligible to run and vote while waiting for the bishop’s next visit.
