Monthly Dispatch

January 2023

Hello D42,

Happy New Year fellow Toastmasters!!!

Welcome to the January issue of District 42’s Monthly Dispatch for the 22/23 Toastmasters year.

Did you enjoy the Holidays with your loved ones? I hope you had an enjoyable time, partied some, recharged a bit, and maybe even get some sunshine somewhere.

Now it's time to get back to your Toastmasters goals. Leadership training is coming up, did you register yet? Contest season will be here before you know it. Are you planning to challenge yourself and compete, or maybe help organize the contest?

There are so many things happening in our District, that can help you on your Toastmasters journey either leadership or communication. Take advantage and learn from our seasoned members. Check out the Event Calendar on the D42 website for upcoming events.

Send us some of your club's December holiday event photos and we will publish them on our Social Media.

Have a great 2023 year.

Would you like to read about anything specific in the future? We look forward to your feedback. Send your comments to Vesna Ivkovic - D42 Dispatch Designer

Leadership Is About Behavior, Not Titles - Eugene Sicat, D42 PQD

I read this article last year and have been thinking about it since then. I wanted to know if I ever fall into the category of being a leader for the title. I never really knew the difference during my early years in leadership at work, but I think I fell more into that category during those years (not easy for me to admit).

DISTRICT NEWS

The Speechcraft program - Daisy Wei, District 42 CGD

The Speechcraft program allows experienced Toastmasters to present the fundamentals of public speaking to non-members. It can be offered as an integral part of your club meeting or as a seminar-style program presented outside the club. It can be conducted in four, six, or eight sessions. It is one of the effective ways to attract new members. District 42 provides a $50 incentive to clubs that organize a Speechcraft program in 2022-2023. Please get in touch with Club Growth Director Daisy Wei if your club has arranged a Speechcraft program.

Congratulation to the clubs who have completed Speechcraft or Communication Workshops. They have attracted new members to join.

There are more resources available about Speechcraft here: Toastmasters International -resource-library

DID YOU KNOW

Did You Know: New Year’s Edition - Twila Tayfel, D42 Dispatch Editor

January 1st is the start of the calendar year in the Gregorian or New Style calendar which first became used in 1582 AD when it was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII.

The tradition of making New Year’s resolutions dates back about 4,000 years. The ancient Babylonians celebrated a 12-day festival known as Akitu. During this festival, the Babylonians crowned a new king or reaffirmed their loyalty to the reigning king. They also made promises to the gods to return objects they had borrowed and to pay their debts. Those who kept their promises were bestowed favours by the gods while those who did not keep their word would fall out of the gods’ favour (a place no Babylonian wanted to be)
