IN MEMORY OF THE REV. DAVID SIBANDE
by The Rev'd Paul Gilbert,
6th Rector of St. John's (1996-2003)
The Rev. David Sibande was a warm, kind hearted man with a huge sense of humor. I think he was a very successful minister. He had the good fortune to attend a conference in NY in the early nineties, and we were able to connect the day before his flight from JFK back to Africa. I took him shopping at the local KMart and bought him many items; dresses for his wife, a watch for both of them, some children's clothes, shoes and other items that were not available in his country. We had so much stuff I had to buy him another suitcase!
There was, thanks to the ladies at St. John's, a last minute lunch organized for him in the parish hall. During the chat someone asked "what do you most need for your ministry in your community." He paused for only a minute and said, "I will need a house to live in when I retire in a few years." He said that because there was no provision for the support of retired clerics in Malawi-too poor. A little silence followed his response but then there was another question. "How much would that cost? Sibande replied very positively, "fifteen thousand dollars." Someone else said, "well, I think we can help."
I arranged for a local bank to handle the transfer and set up an account in Malawi from which he could draw the funds with a trustee of the Bank of Malawi overseeing the project. I didn't want anyone at the church worrying about some kind of African scam-it wasn't.
Two years later the project was completed and paid for. The house was a brick structure of four rooms on one floor. It had a kitchen, bathroom and two bedrooms, all with windows. Now he could retire and have a safe place to live. He named the house St. John's Cottage. Recently, David Sibande died at 80 from complications of COVID-19. He leaves a large family and his spouse to carry on.
Not too long ago in a thank you note for the quarterly financial gift I sent him, he wrote: "You are the best friend I have ever had." I think the reverse is true.
Susanne Dillenback, Cora Michalis and a few others might remember this occasion. The generosity of St. John's traveled halfway round the world and made a huge difference to one man, his family and a community too, thanks be to God.
Faithfully, The Rev'd Paul Gilbert

"Sacred Ground"
A 10-Week Dialogue Series on Race & Faith
Announcing a New Virtual Lenten Program
Mondays, 7:30 – 9:00 pm via Zoom
(February 22, March 1, March 8, March 15, March 22
April 12, April 19, April 26, May 3, May 10)
Sacred Ground is a film-and readings-based dialogue series on race, grounded in faith. Small groups are invited to walk through chapters of America's history of race and racism, while weaving in threads of family story, economic class, and political and regional identity.
The 10-part series is built around a powerful online curriculum of documentary films and readings that focus on Indigenous, Black, Latino, and Asian/Pacific American histories as they intersect with European American histories.
Sacred Ground is part of Becoming Beloved Community, The Episcopal Church's long-term commitment to racial healing, reconciliation, and justice in our personal lives, our ministries, and our society. This series is open to all and especially designed to help white people talk with other white people. Participants are invited to peel away the layers that have contributed to the challenges and divides of the present day – all while grounded in our call to faith, hope and love.
This course from the Mercer School is designed for those in our Diocese who do not have access to Sacred Ground in their own congregations, or for congregations who may not have enough interested members to form their own circle. It is part of our Diocesan commitment to building Beloved Community together. Facilitators are EDLI clergy and learning materials will be provided from the TEC website. No fee required.
