STEM(M) AT ST. LUKE'S
FEATURING: BIOMED STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN MASS CASUALTY DRILL AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA
What a great experience for our students! St. Luke’s Biomedical Sciences students were the "victims" (actors) in the University of South Alabama Mass Casualty Drill. After studying their assigned injuries, learning how to respond, and applying moulage to make their wounds appear real, our students looked and acted like they were in an actual gas explosion at a concession stand in the Hancock Whitney Stadium.
The mass casualty drill was a well-scripted scenario that was as close to a real-life emergency as possible to allow students to experience chaos in a real-world setting. As soon as the explosion occurred, screams, moans, and cries for help were heard as the healthcare students attended to the “patients” in real-time. Once the “patients” were examined at the scene, they were transferred to a hospital-like setting.
This drill allows the healthcare students to utilize what they have learned in the classroom and receive feedback from their professors. It also provided our students with an invaluable opportunity.

ST. LUKE'S TEACHES THE VALUE OF HELPING OTHERS STARTING IN K2!
No child is too young to volunteer, even toddlers can learn the value of helping others! Studies show that helping others makes kids kinder, more empathetic, have higher self-esteem, and are much more likely to continue volunteering as adults.
Ms. Kim's K2 class donated and packed snacks to send to Major Troy Clemmons. Major Clemmons (US Airforce) was deployed to Africa for 6 months. Both of his children attend St. Luke's preschool!
