Newcomer Welcome Brunch - November 20 | |

The time has come to celebrate the many newcomers who have graced our parish doors, and internet pathways, during these last few years of COVID and beyond. We invite the entire congregation to share a meal together, namely brunch, after the 9:30 a.m. service on Sunday November 20th.
Please come on down to the undercroft, pull up a chair, enjoy some food, and together let us spend some time getting to know one another better.

While you are likely starting to plan Thanksgiving dinner for your family, there are many right here in our community who can’t imagine such a meal for their family. You can provide holiday food for a family in need this Thanksgiving.
Your ICA team will be selling turkey certificates in the narthex after both services this coming Sunday. Each $25 certificate will provide a turkey and all the fixings for a holiday meal to a local family. We will accept either cash or checks made out to ICA. Hope to see you Sunday! remaining"!

We wrapped up our Giving Campaign on Sunday, November 6 with delicious sugar cookies and pumpkin bread made by the youth group. It was so fun to see the creative decorations on the cookies – I didn’t know that fish could have bloodshot eyes! Thanks Youth Group and leaders! Thanks as well to all of you who decorated loaves and fishes to contribute to the window decorations on All Saints Sunday.
As of the end of the campaign, we have received 69 pledges for a total of $313,441 which gets us to 84% of our goal of $375,000. Thank You to all of you who pledged during the campaign. Knowing what income to expect is a big help as we start the 2023 budgeting process.
Even though the campaign is over, there is still time to send in your pledge. If you misplaced your pledge packet, you can send an email to the office at [email protected].

The 165th Convention of the Episcopal Church in Minnesota (ECMN) was held on October 28-29 in Rochester, Minnesota. St. David's Clergy Delegates in attendance were Guy Drake, Len Freeman, Lindsay Freeman, and Katherine Lewis. Lay delegates were Nan Drake, Julia Handley, and David Niles.
After a brief morning worship, the Bishop gave his address. Most of this address was played in church on Sunday, but for those who missed it, Bishop Loya started by reading the first part of Genesis, Chapter 11, the Tower of Babel story. In reflection, he observed that diversity is God's design, and uniformity is human regression. We were called to be gardeners, not builders, both back then and today.
The Bishop remarked that we are trying to build a reimagined church tower, but the tower we thought we used to be as a church has been toppled down. We are exhausted from trying to rebuild it.
He calls on Minnesota Episcopalians to mark this as a turning point to set aside our desire to be builders and take up our calling to be gardeners. He outlined three possible ways forward for ECMN. 1. We could keep doing what we've been doing (trying to rebuild the church). 2. We could retreat and walk away, or 3. We could just stay here but let go (but not give up), just play in the dirt together and stop keeping God at arm's length with building. He urges us to garden God's church for God's world.
Bishop Loya gave us three things to consider for what this might look like: 1. We need to spend time tending to the root system - apprenticing ourselves to Jesus. We can do this through small discipleship groups. 2. Try to relearn together to let God consciously and intentionally lead our lives and stop living as functional atheists. Let God use us - lay down our burden of it being our job to force fruit to grow. 3. Help God cultivate a diverse church ecology. Get rid of the notion that bigger is better and focus on small communities. What if our future is more, smaller faith gatherings?
At convention we also elected clergy and lay candidates to a number of diocesan committees and positions. We elected deputies to the 2024 General Convention of the Episcopal Church. We heard stories from several faith communities across ECMN, including a church in Old Frontenac that created a beautiful outdoor worship space and the merging of Saints Luke and James to form one faith community. We adopted the 2023 financial statement of mission (budget). We recognized Good Courage Farm as an Episcopal-affiliated organization. We adopted a resolution expressing support for bodily rights and reproductive autonomy, and we adopted a resolution urging ECMN faith communities to pray for creation.
We engaged in four worship services with beautiful music led by our own Roger Stratton. Roger and Katherine also hosted a jazz compline on Friday night attended by approximately 85 people in person, plus seven of our St. David's compline group via Zoom.
On Saturday we heard from the Rev. Canon Blair Pogue - ECMN's new Canon for Vitality and Innovation. Both she and the Bishop shared their "Jesus stories," and we discussed ways in which we can center discipleship in our congregations. One quote from the morning: "We can't do the what until we address the why."
Next year's convention will be held November 9-11, 2023, in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. The Presiding Bishop will be in attendance.

Interfaith Thanksgiving Gathering | |

St. David's joins the communities of Bet Shalom Congregation, The Mills Church, and the Spirit of Peace Church, in inviting you to join together in celebration of Thanksgiving with music, prayer, poetry, sacred scripture, opportunities for reflection, community building and the sharing of food. In divisive times, we know we are stronger together.

For anyone who likes to sing, we’re forming an interfaith choir for the event, made up of members of these four communities. Singers will meet before the service, 5:30 at Bet Shalom, for a brief rehearsal. If you’re interested in singing, contact Roger Stratton at [email protected].

We have enough people interested in Bridge lessons that we will be offering a class this Fall. If you are interested in learning or relearning to play bridge please join us. We welcome both youth and adults. Bridge is a fascinating game. If you have ever played Hearts or Spades or Whist, then you already have a head start. The lessons will be at church on Friday nights from 6:30 to 9:00 on the following dates:

Advent is coming soon, meaning it’s almost time for the Posada! In Spanish-speaking regions, “la posada” refers to an inn or a hotel. In many Hispanic traditions, “las posadas” is a term for a type of re-enactment of Mary and Joseph's search for lodging in Bethlehem and is performed just before Christmas. St. David’s honors this tradition by having a set of beautiful felted wool figures of Mary and Joseph travel to our homes for a few nights, affording those who participate the opportunity to be innkeepers. It is a chance for us to extend warm, safe and welcoming hospitality to our “guests” for a few days during Advent.
Each household interested in being an innkeeper should sign up via email. A schedule of overnights for Mary and Joseph is made and provided to the innkeepers who have signed up. Our Mary and Joseph will make their first overnight at a St. David’s home on the first Sunday of Advent (November 27). Then they travel to different homes in the St. David’s community, according to the schedule, and stay for about 2 nights. Each innkeeper is responsible for contacting the next host on the schedule, arranging to drop-off of Mary and Joseph at a time and place that is mutually convenient, and providing a small holiday treat for the receiving innkeepers to enjoy. On Saturday, Dec. 24, the last innkeeper on the schedule brings Mary and Joseph to St. David’s for the 4 pm Christmas Eve Service, marking the end of their long journey.

It’s Turkey Time!
For over 20 years, ICA’s Holiday Food Program has given away turkeys with all the fixings to so many families in our community. You are invited to help our neighbors in need this holiday season. Each $25 donation will provide the gift of a holiday meal to a local family. It is anticipated that about 1000 turkeys will be given away this year. The turkey giveaway will be on Saturday, November 19 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at ICA’s K-Tel location. In addition, turkeys will be available through the mobile food shelf, home deliveries and at regular food appointments before Thanksgiving. There is a limit of one turkey per household through December.
How can you help?
1. Stop in the narthex after either service this Sunday and purchase a turkey certificate from the St. David’s ICA team. Either cash or a check made out to ICA ($25 for each meal purchased) will be welcomed.
2. You can also donate online at www.icafoodshelf.org/turkey. In the donor information section, be sure to select “St. David’s” in the congregation section.
Give to the Max Day 2022 - November 17
ICA is participating once again in Give to the Max Day. It is Minnesota’s annual giving holiday which has raised more than $250 million for more than 14,000 nonprofits in its first 13 years. Contributions made through November 17 will be eligible for matching funds.
You can donate through GiveMN.org. Hit the Donate button, then enter ICA using the search function, hit cart and enter the amount you wish to donate. Perhaps while you are in the website, there may be some other local or state nonprofit that you would like to support using the matching funds of Give MN.
ICA Day at Maynard’s - November 28
Mark your calendars for Monday, November 28. ICA Day at Maynard’s in Excelsior is back. Enjoy a meal there with family and/or friends anytime that day. 100% of the proceeds will benefit the ICA Food Shelf. Call 952-470-1800 for reservations.
A Story to Warm Your Heart
Twelve year old Zoey Busch has made it an annual birthday tradition to collect food and monetary donations for ICA. In fact, she has been able to donate over 6000 pounds of food through her initiative. Earlier this month, Zoey stopped by the Food Shelf to drop donations from her annual ICA drive. This year, she was able to collect and donate 552 pounds of food and over $500! What a great example for everyone in the community!
