NATIONAL ROOF OVER YOUR HEAD DAY

National Roof Over Your Head Day was created as a day to be thankful for what you have, starting with the roof over your head. There are many things that we have that we take for granted and do not stop to appreciate how fortunate we are for having them.

All across our nation, there are many who do not have the things that are necessary to everyday life. They may lack a roof over their heads, enough food to eat, or clothes to wear. For those who have those bare necessities, it may be insufficient.

The day reminds us to appreciate what we have. This day follows closely after Thanksgiving, a day to be thankful. So just like Thanksgiving, be thankful for what you do have and always remember, that it is a better feeling than worrying about what you do not have.

This annual recognition and celebration aims to highlight individuals who showcase exceptional leadership, dedication, and positive influence across the New Orleans community. Nominations will close December 11, 2023. Nominations allow community members to shine a spotlight on those individuals whose impact has been transformative in the city of New Orleans. "The Role Model Awards are a testament to the power of leadership and community impact. An exhibit of original works by Art Deco icon Erté will include almost 170 items as well as other period pieces that characterized the movement of style and design.

"Erté and the Era of Art Deco" will remain open through Jan. 3, 2024.

Often called "the father of Art Deco," Romain de Tirtoff, known as Erté, was the central figure of the art and design evolution that emerged during the 1920s. The look featured stylized forms, geometric patterns, vibrant colors and sleek lines. Its influence flooded the world of art, fashion, architecture, furniture design, serviceware and more.

The Rau exhibit includes a large collection of the artist's original gouache paintings, used to create designs for fashion shows, clubs and stage performances.

During the Christmas season, almost every local has made their way through the cold streets of downtown New Orleans to see the lobby of the romantic Roosevelt Hotel.

Faux tree stems wrapped in glimmering white lights stand tall as they hover over guests and nearly touch the ceiling chandeliers. Neighboring the branches are snow-white Christmas trees covered in red ribbons and ornaments. Both decors line the lobby in a perfect, picturesque pattern.

Hence, it isn't hard to understand why Travel and Leisure named the Roosevelt one of the 15 most festive hotels in the U.S. during the holiday season.

“Our hotel guests, New Orleanians and tourists from all over the world come to The Roosevelt at this time of year because it is truly the brightest, most brilliant place to bring out the holiday spirit,” Tod Chambers, general manager of the Roosevelt, said in a news release.

This year, the Roosevelt is bringing back its beloved Christmas tradition on Nov. 28, unveiling 1,600 feet of garland and 4,000 glass ornaments, the hotel announced Wednesday morning.

New Orleans Saints Executive Vice President and General Manager Mickey Loomis will be there to help switch on the ceremonial lighting of over 112,000 lights, the Roosevelt said in a news release.

The hotel will also be offering various options for holiday dining experiences and drink options at the Sazerac Bar and Teddy's Café.

The Sazerac Bar is bringing back their annual holiday drinks, including the Christmas Cookie — a sweet, vodka-based mixed drink — and the Candy Cane, a sugar drink featuring Rumple Minze.

City Park Prepares for Enhanced Celebration in the Oaks

Expanded holiday festival to include Driving Tour, amusement-park rides and reimagined Walking Tour

New Orleans City Park’s Celebration in the Oaks, one of the most-spectacular holiday lights festivals in the country, has fascinated guests for generations. The month-long fundraiser attracts over 135,000 visitors each year who come to see City Park’s famous live oak trees swathed in over a million twinkling lights and discover hundreds of breathtaking displays throughout the Park. This year, THE New Orleans holiday tradition is taking it to another level.

“With the Driving Tour and Walking Tour, this will be the biggest footprint Celebration in the Oaks has had since Hurricane Katrina,” said Cara Lambright, City Park Conservancy CEO. “As our largest annual fundraiser, we can’t wait to share this exciting celebration with our community.”

Boasting more light displays, new attractions and the return of the Botanical Garden Walking Tour, the 2022 Celebration will offer a variety of options, and price points, for guests to choose from.

Highlights this year include:

2.25-mile Driving Tour with enhanced displays

Walking Tour with Botanical Garden access and Carousel Gardens Amusement Park rides included

Multiple dedicated Bike Nights

Botanical Garden Dripping Tree, Poinsettia Tree, Historic Train Garden and “Cajun Night Before Christmas”

Carousel Gardens Train, Christmas Tree, Mr. Bingle and free marshmallows and hot chocolate

Holiday-themed Storyland

Iconic LED dinosaurs, flamingos and pirate ship

New exhibits such Toy Land, a 12-foot Dandelion Meadow Display and Winter Wonderland

“We heard the call of the community and challenged ourselves to step it up,” said Julie LaCour, Director of CITO/Special Events. “We know how important this event is to visitors, and we feel confident this year’s final product will make memories for folks that will last a lifetime.”

City Park Conservancy’s annual operating budget is largely reliant on self-generated activities, often weather dependent, and Celebration in the Oaks plays a key role in funding the Park’s continued maintenance and beauty each year, providing nearly 10% of the Park’s annual budget. The public’s investment and attendance at Celebration in the Oaks supports City Park’s success going forward.

Orange you glad there's something to celebrate besides Christmas? This year the Plaquemines Parish Fair and Orange Festival returns to the magnificent grounds of historic Fort Jackson in Buras. The three-day event celebrates a century of citrus farming with live music, family activities, local foods, Civil War re-enactments on the hour, carnival and helicopter rides—and lots of cooking and eating contests. Few festivals offer an array of competitions as diverse as this one: pie eating, orange eating, orange peeling, duck calling, shrimp peeling, catfish skinning, catfish de-heading, and oyster shucking are all categories in which the competitive may excel.

THE DOOKY CHASE KITCHEN: LEAH’S LEGACY cooking series celebrates Leah Chase, the “Queen of Creole Cuisine.”

The 26-part cooking series, produced by WYES-TV in New Orleans, was shot on location at Dooky Chase’s Restaurant with dishes prepared by younger generations of the Chase family who have led the restaurant since Leah’s death in 2019.

Viewers will meet Leah’s grandson, Edgar “Dook” Chase IV, who now oversees the restaurant’s kitchen; her niece Cleo Robinson, who joined Leah in the kitchen in 1980; and the restaurant’s newest chef, Leah’s great-granddaughter Zoe Chase. Paired with some of the menus are specialty cocktails crafted by Leah’s granddaughter Eve Marie Haydel, the restaurant’s beverage manager who has updated drink recipes from the restaurant’s earlier days. Granddaughter Chase Kamata narrates. Each 30-minute episode explores a new take on Creole classics and a different chapter of the restaurant’s history.

See it every Saturday at 10am and on Sundays at 11:30am. Watch on WYES-TV and stream on wyes.org/live and on the WYES and PBS Apps. Out of WYES’ viewing area?

SAINTS VS. LIONS GAME PREVIEW

The New Orleans Saints begin a crucial three-game stretch of home contests when they host the Detroit Lions at the Caesars Superdome on Dec. 3 at 12:00 p.m. CT. The game will be regionally televised on FOX.

The Saints will be looking to even up their record at 6-6, where they share the same 5-6 mark in the NFC South with the Atlanta Falcons, who they dropped a 24-15 decision to on Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, giving the Falcons the initial division edge, with the two clubs set to face off a second time in the Week 18 season finale.

The Saints have a 13-12-1 regular season record against Detroit. This will be their first matchup against the Lions since a 35-29 win at Ford Field on October 4, 2020. New Orleans will be seeking their third consecutive win over Detroit. The first game ended in a 20-20 tie on Nov. 24, 1968 at Detroit's Tiger Stadium. The two clubs split all 10 meetings from 1970-89. 14 contests have been decided by a touchdown or less. The Saints are 9-5 in home contests

So much happened before Dorothy dropped in.

WICKED, the Broadway sensation, looks at what happened in the Land of Oz…but from a different angle. Long before Dorothy arrives, there is another girl, born with emerald-green skin—smart, fiery, misunderstood, and possessing an extraordinary talent. When she meets a bubbly blonde who is exceptionally popular, their initial rivalry turns into the unlikeliest of friendships…until the world decides to call one “good,” and the other one “wicked.” With a thrilling score that includes the hits “Defying Gravity,” “Popular” and “For Good,” WICKED has been hailed by The New York Times as “the defining musical of the decade.” Time Magazine cheers, “if every musical had the brain, the heart, and the courage of WICKED, Broadway really would be a magical place.” From the first electrifying note to the final breathtaking moment, WICKED—the untold true story of the Witches of Oz—transfixes audiences with its wildly inventive story. It will send your spirits soaring to heights you’ll never forget.

The festivities kick off with a dazzling ceremony to illuminate the more than 2,000 lights, casting a magical glow over the Holiday of Lights event. On December 1 at 6 p.m., the Holiday of Lights Parade will take center stage on Koop Drive, lighting up the night and filling the air with holiday spirit. And guess who'll be in the parade?

  • Santa Claus: Yes, the man in red himself, Santa Claus, will be making a grand entrance to join the festivities. After all, it's not a holiday celebration without Santa!
  • Parish President Mike Cooper: Parish President Mike Cooper will be there to officially turn on the lights at the water tower and spread the joy and excitement of the season.
  • Abita Springs Children’s Academie: These little stars will be shining brightly in the parade, adding an extra touch of holiday magic.
  • Louisiana Ladies Dance Team: Get ready to be wowed by the grace and talent of the Louisiana Ladies Dance Team as they dance their way into your hearts.
  • Be Hooper Be Happy Hula Hoopers: These hula hoopers are not your average hoopers; they glow in the dark, creating a mesmerizing spectacle.
  • St. Tammany Parish Fire District 12: Our local heroes from Fire District 12 will be there, big red fire engine and all!
  • Adorable Dogs from St. Tammany Parish's Animal Services Shelter: Prepare for some heartwarming moments as these lovable dogs join the parade. Some of them are dressed as reindeer and some looking for their forever homes, making this parade extra special.

KEEP THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT ALIVE: DRIVE-THRU LIGHTS UNTIL DECEMBER 31

The fun doesn't end on December 9! After that date, the Holiday of Lights continues as a drive-thru experience on Koop Drive until December 31. The twinkling lights will illuminate the night from dusk through dawn, ensuring that the holiday spirit lingers long after the parade ends.

A Community Tradition

In 2022, after a years-long hiatus, the Holiday of Lights returned and welcomed an estimated 20,000 visitors! As it approaches its quarter-century anniversary, the Holiday of Lights has become an integral part of the Northshore's holiday celebrations, bringing families together to celebrate the most wonderful time of the year.

NOW THROUGH SUNDAY, DEC. 31

HOLIDAY LIGHTS: 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. nightly, Baton Rouge General, 8585 Picardy Ave. The large green space in front of the hospital is transformed into a twinkling, singing and musically synchronized lights display. "Snow & Glow," a special event taking place 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursdays, Dec. 7 and 14, will feature snow, glow-in-the-dark performers, jingle and mingle with Santa, Mrs. Claus and elves, and food trucks. $5. eventbrite.com.

What were colonists protesting with the Boston Tea Party?

Colonists were protesting The Stamp Act, a British tax on print materials such as stamps and newspapers.

Did You Know? The Boston Tea Party occurred in 1773, but the first time that the actual words “Boston Tea Party” were seen in writing was in 1825, and in most of the early mentions, when the word “party” didn’t even refer to a celebratory event with cakes and balloons as we know today but to a party of men.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

Each year on December 3rd, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities promotes the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. The day raises awareness of the political, economic, social and cultural aspects disability affects people around the world.

More than 1 billion people in the world have a disability. At 15 percent of the world's population, persons with disabilities account for the world's largest minority. Furthermore, one out of every seven people is affected by disability.

Definition and Types

Disability is defined as a condition or function that is significantly impaired. Types of disabilities include:

  • Physical impairment
  • Sensory impairment
  • Cognitive impairment
  • Intellectual impairment
  • Mental illness
  • Chronic disease

Discrimination and Challenges

Some persons with disabilities live with multiple impairments. No matter what kind or how many impairments, the impact of disability on one's life is profound. Disability often leads to poorer health. Additionally, a person with a disability may attain lower educational achievements. As a result, disability may lead to fewer economic opportunities. Those with disabilities also have higher rates of poverty. Many countries and cultures shun persons with disabilities causing them to live in isolation.

For many years, discrimination, lack of access to services, lack of social support, and ignorance about disability have been some of the main challenges persons with disabilities face. Even in today’s age of inclusivity, these challenges continue.

Another challenge persons with disabilities face is access to adequate health care. In developing countries, sufficient healthcare is especially difficult to access. Often people with physical impairments are forced to go without the necessary mobility aids. They live without supports like wheelchairs and other mobility devices. Children can't attend school, and adults can't work. In some cases, a simple procedure or rehabilitation improves function. Sadly, in many developing countries persons with disabilities go without. As a result, their function often declines.

In 2006, the UN adopted the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). The CRPD declared accessibility and inclusion as fundamental rights for persons of disabilities. Unfortunately, much still needs to be done for these rights to be recognized.

Steamboat Natchez passing under the "new bridge" under construction next to the 1958-vintage bridge. Times-Picayune, 2-December-1983The pair would be re-christened the "Crescent City Connection." "Steamboat Stories" author Derby Gisclair will be able to tell us which incarnation of the Natchez this is.

While the traitor Lee's personal connections to New Orleans were tenuous (he only stopped in New Orleans once, for about 30 hours, on his way to the Mexican War), his legend was always strong here.

1883: Parade of the New Orleans Fire Department

The New Orleans Fire Department held their forty-sixth annual celebratory parade on March 4, 1883, with visiting fire companies from across Louisiana and as far away as Mobile, Alabama, marching along. The artist shows the parade as it crosses Canal Street from St. Charles Street (Avenue) – notice the statue of Henry Clay on the left.

Prominently seen is Mechanic’s steam fire company No. 6 whose beautifully ornamented Amoskeag engine was drawn by four horses, with a veteran horse “Billy” leading the way. Billy was exempt from active service.

An interesting side note was that there were two surviving members of the department when it was first chartered in 1835 – A. C. Labatt and R.H. Brunet, aged eighty-four and seventy-three respectively.

Chef Warren Leruth

Few people have an impact on all levels of society as culinary master Warren Leruth. The New Orleans native dropped out of LSU in the late 1940s to become an apprentice baker at Solari's -- his mother had been a baker. He also apprenticed at Galatoire's, Diamond Jim Moran's, and the Monteleone Hotel.

He was drafted into the US Army while he was attending the National Guard's cook and bake school. Typical of Leruth, he rose through the ranks to become a baker, mess hall supervisor, and eventually the personal chef for General Mark Clark in Korea.

After his military service, Leruth went to work for Proctor & Gamble where he helped develop the line of Duncan-Hines cake mixes. This led to a job developing salad dressing for Anderson Clayton in Shreveport, LA where he formulated their Seven Seas line which included Green Goddess, Creamy Italian, and Thousand Island.

Leruth then opened his first restaurant in Sherman, Texas, where his food garnered the acclaim of critics nationally. He returned to New Orleans after Hurricane Betsy devastated the city in 1965, opening a new restaurant in a renovated shotgun house on Franklin Street in Gretna which he called LeRuth's (capital "R" in the restaurant name, not his name). That restaurant became popular nationally, with a reservation list peppered with prominent names who had to wait sometimes as long as four months in advance. His creations included oyster-artichoke soup and soft shell crabs with lump crabmeat.

He closed that restaurant in 1991 and continued to operate his food consulting business. In that capacity he worked with restaurants as diverse as Krystal, Outback Steakhouse, and Popeye's. If you enjoyed the red beans and biscuits at Popeye's you can thank Warren Leruth. Chef and food scientist Warren Leruth died in 2001 at the age of 71.

City of New Orleans Encourages Residents to Participate in the Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program to Rebuild Wetlands

NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans today reminded residents of the annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program to restore our wetlands. For over 25 years, this program has contributed to the restoration of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge, while preventing them from being placed in landfills. The trees also create an important habitat for birds, fish, crabs, crawfish and shrimp.

"Every year, our Christmas trees bring light and happiness into our homes, but their significance goes far beyond spreading holiday joy," said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. "Recycling and placing these trees along our eroding coastline to help rebuild our wetlands will assist in the effort to protect our great city and state for generations to come. This robust tree recycling program is another example of how New Orleans will continue to lead in combatting the global climate crisis while promoting innovative opportunities to create a better, greener and more vibrant community. So far, recycled trees have restored an area of marsh equal to approximately 200 football fields. Thank you to our residents who continue to donate their Christmas trees year after year to enhance our coastline restoration efforts."

The program is coordinated by the City's Office of Resilience and Sustainability (ORS) and Department of Sanitation, in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the Louisiana National Guard.

“We’re bringing attention to the Christmas Tree Recycling Program today because Black Friday and Small Business Saturday are popular days for New Orleanians to buy and decorate live Christmas trees,” said Director of Economic Development Jeff Schwartz. “The City can only accept trees without tinsel and flocking, and we ask residents to please consider this while decorating your tree.”

“While we are making great progress, protecting our natural resources remains more important than ever for New Orleans,” said ORS Deputy Chief Resilience Officer Greg Nichols. "The Christmas Tree Recycling Program is a great way for residents to get involved in the fight to restore our coast.”

Residents are encouraged to place their trees curbside for collection by Department of Sanitation contractors from Jan. 8 - 12, 2024. Trees cannot be flocked, and all ornamentation must be removed before placing them on the curb.  Once they are collected, they will be sorted, bundled and airlifted by helicopter and dropped in targeted sections of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge. The City’s goal is to collect 10,000 trees this year.

“The annual Christmas Tree Drop represents a long-standing partnership between the Louisiana National Guard and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service," said Louisiana National Guard, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Gabriel Ruiz. "It benefits the City of New Orleans and surrounding coastal environment, while also providing valuable training hours for our pilots and crewmembers of the 1st Assault Helicopter Battalion, 244th Aviation Regiment."

“I’d like to thank the residents of New Orleans for sharing their Christmas trees with us each year and making their contribution to coastal restoration," said USFWS Refuge Manager Shelley Stiaes. "Their tradition of donating Christmas trees is helping to rebuild our coastline and build habitat for wildlife."

WHAT NOW? Julia and Emily Save Christmas!

What Now? is a comedy show celebrating the darkness the dysfunction the mania in all of us. It’s about sitting in the shit and still finding laughter and levity.

Comedians Julia DeLois (Reductress The Air Sex Championships) and Emily Slazer (Edinburgh Improv Festival San Francisco Sketchfest) are back with their quarterly show that audiences have described as “like being at the funnest sleepover ever with all your best friends.”

Each show is an ALL NEW ALL UNHINGED hour of scenes sketches and interactive segments. This installment WHAT NOW? Julia and Emily Save Christmas! is a downward spiral into holiday hysteria and the mania that only December can deliver.

What Now? is built around audience connection so we can’t do it without you. But don't worry - no terrifying or hacky audience participation required. You're free to be a part of the show as much or as little as you like - but we promise you'll have more fun if you are.

See you there future besties. ❤

Exciting news from the Office of Lt. Governor and the Office of Tourism! We're thrilled to announce the stunning new design for our float as we gear up for our 3rd year in the 2024 Rose Parade in Pasadena, California.

This year’s theme is “Celebrating a World of Music: The Universal Language." Our float features a larger-than-life Mardi Gras jester, fleur de lis, second-line inspired umbrellas, and lots of purple, green, and gold.

LSU Athletics is proud to announce its year-long celebration of 100 Years in Tiger Stadium, highlighted by stadium upgrades, events, storytelling initiatives, and a season-long celebration throughout the 2024 campaign.

Tiger Stadium, one of America’s most iconic sporting venues, first opened its gates on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1924. Since then, the Tigers have won 450 contests in Death Valley, which has been home to two Heisman Trophy winners, four national championship teams, and 12 SEC title-winning squads.

Included in the celebration are several upgrades to Tiger Stadium, including a new videoboard and lighting system, as well as other upgrades designed to enhance the game day experience. Other events and celebrations will be announced throughout the year.

The 2024 home schedule features several marquee matchups, including home contests against Oklahoma, UCLA, and Alabama. Information on the full 2024 schedule and season tickets will be announced in the coming weeks.

One of the most legendary stadiums in all of college football, Tiger Stadium has been called “the best place in the world to watch a sporting event” by ESPN and “the pound-for-pound king of noise in college football.”

Entering its centennial season in 2024, Tiger Stadium has been a cornerstone of LSU Athletics and the Louisiana community for almost a century, hosting numerous NFL superstars, Heisman Trophy winners, and Hall of Famers since its opening in 1924. It serves as a sporting, cultural, and commercial hub for LSU Athletics, which contributes an estimated $500 million of economic activity for the state of Louisiana annually.

Professor Carl Nivale

Welcoming the new marching krewe, Krewe Mosaïque! They have their first parade on January 13th, from Armstrong Park to Ursuline Convent. Your favorite Professor and Grand Marshal Marty Graw look forward to being there!

#Carnival2024 #MardiGras2024 #OurCarnivalHeritage #krewemosaique

https://www.axios.com/.../new-krewe-mardi-gras-parade...

A new walking krewe will debut for Mardi Gras 2024, marching through the French Quarter on Jan. 13.

Why it matters: The event fills in an otherwise parade-free weekend during the weekslong celebration of Carnival in New Orleans.

What's happening: Krewe Mosaïque will march for 12 blocks from Armstrong Park to the Ursuline Convent for the first time.

  • This year's krewe will max out at 200 members, and organizers are putting an emphasis on DIY elements, handmade throws and cultural or historical relevance to the city.
  • The idea stems from the krewe's founding members preference for DIY costuming and contraption-building.

What she's saying: "Everything is bright and colorful and very unique unto themselves, but when we come together, it's this beautiful experience, like a mosaic," says Krewe Mosaïque founder Terese Aiello.
