DC MOVES FORUM updates

June 22, 2022
9:00 to Noon
8:30 coffee and networking

From the May 20th issues of WOTMs , the answer, or question in Jeopardy style, the author was Dr Seuss. Dr Seuss has written many wonderful “kids” books – here’s the link to Horton Hears a WHO https://anyflip.com/wyvqq/nrud/basic . A very important story.

This book tells the story of Horton the Elephant and his adventures saving Whoville, a tiny planet located on a speck of dust, from the animals who mock him. These animals attempt to steal and burn the speck of dust, so Horton goes to great lengths to save Whoville from being destroyed.

Looking at this story as an analogy for Human Services in Dufferin County
Who / what are the animals attempting to do harm?
Covid, continuous uncertain uncertainty, repeated rapid responses, the systemic inequities in delivery systems?

Who are the who’s?
Our Dufferin county citizens, our service seekers, those you keep safe, sound, whole and well every day.

Horton is analogous to each of you – putting yourselves in the role of keeping others safe, sound, whole and well every day, you too share his mantra ″Of course, of course I will stick. I will stick by you Dufferin folks through thin and through thick! You commit to this mantra though it may be exhausting – maybe even terrifying?

I ask  My friends! Tell me! Do tell! Are you safe? Are you sound? Are you whole? Are you well?" And like the mayor of Whoville who pleaded with the Who’s to save them from destruction, I ask you to register and attend the June Forum because “We’ve got to make noises in greater amounts! So open your mouth folks, For every voice counts!”

On the 22nd of June, in the virtual room, we'll be giving to you, new ways of thinking, not more to do!

Meet 2 local guest presenters: Erin Goodyear, ED Choices and Rohan Thompson, Dufferin County Director, People and Equity

Meet 2 guest facilitators: Mary Harvey, for some serious fun improv-ing ourselves. Mary was with the Second City Touring Company for three years. As Andrea Martin’s understudy, she had the pleasure of performing on stage with John Candy, Dan Ackroyd and Catherine O’Hara, to drop a few names, and Hildy Gottlieb, founder of Creating the Future, introducing Catalytic Thinking http://creatingthefuture.org/about-our-founder/

"I highly recommend attending the next DC MOVES Forum! Guest speaker Hildy Gotlieb is the head of an organization called Creating the Future and the creator of Catalytic Thinking. I’ve had the privilege of working with Hildy and learning from her – I am not exaggerating when I say that the practice of Catalytic Thinking has changed my way of approaching almost any challenge I face as a leader!" Norah Kennedy, Executive Director FTP

"It is more important then ever for us to carve out time to attend networking opportunities like the upcoming June Forum. We need to dedicate time to re-engage, re-connect and be together coming out of the past two years. Our prioritizing of engagement and re-connecting with each other as service providers will result providing us with more resources to service our clients."

Brenda Burman, MA
Campus Manager, Orangeville and South Georgian Bay

"The last few years have seen extraordinary partnerships and collaboration where community agencies, charities and the non-profit sector worked together to provide support services. The range of services our collaborative partners are involved in is immense. At the heart of those partnerships and collaborations are relationships. The relationships we have with each other. We may not all be meeting in person as we once were, but make no mistake, gathering together is still virtually important to what we do. Please join us as we reconnect and share valuable information."

Many thanks.

Today our partners at John Howard Society of Ontario, the Canadian Observartory on Homelessness, and the Social Research and Demonstration Corporation launched a new report on homelessness and incarceration which looks at the growing number of No Fixed Address admissions into Ontario’s correctional facilities.
This report is a summary of the first phase of a larger research project examining the experiences of justice-involved people living with homelessness in Ontario.
The report looked at the number of admissions to Ontario correctional institutions since 2007 who had No Fixed Address at the time of admission.
Even though the total number of admissions to Ontario’s correctional facilities has fallen steadily over the last 10 years, the number of No Fixed Address admissions has grown, from 1 in 16 to 1 in Check out the report

The National Housing Strategy (NHS) introduced on November 22, 2017, promised rights-based legislation to implement the government’s commitment to the progressive implementation of the right to housing, as guaranteed in the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. That promised legislation, the National Housing Strategy Act, received Royal Assent on June 21, 2019. Read more here
One option to consider in our current difficult housing market is adding a second unit to a home. Such units can be used to help loved ones live independently.
Here's is Ontario's guide to building a second unit in an existing home:
The Workforce Planning Board, in partnership with the Guelph-Wellington Local Immigration Partnership and Waterloo Region Immigration Partnership, is excited to share our latest research report which examines immigrants as they pertain to our local labour markets in Waterloo Region, Wellington County and Dufferin County. Specifically, this project provides a review of the changing nature of the local labour markets and what this means for skilled immigrants and the economic challenges and opportunities which lie ahead for our communities. This project aims to provide research and analysis to help local industries, community partners and policy makers make better informed decisions on how best to support and integrate Internationally Trained Professionals who are identified as a key talent pool for employers.
The BICN Annual Report for 2021-22 is out now, highlighting a year of some remarkable achievements in challenging times and the seeds of an even greater push going forward.
