Evangelism: When Thanksgiving Overflows

When you think of the overflow of thanksgiving you might think of leftovers in your fridge. As great as leftover turkey is, this series has been about the overflow of our hearts when we are thankful for all that God has done. It’s from that place of peace, hope, and love that we are called to tell people what God has done in our hearts and lives. That’s evangelism!

I hope that you have a positive perspective on evangelism after this series. But my prayer is that the perspective is transformed into a holy desire to tell someone why you put your hope in Jesus. Friends, be evangelists because you will do it with humility and a good conscience.

Next Sunday will be our final one in this series. We will talk about evangelism being necessary instead of optional. We have the good news of forgiveness and grace, life now and forever, and it’s in the name of Jesus. It is Christ the King Sunday, so let’s keep Christ as THE King instead of one of many…and then share him.

Keep Growing Your Faith

At Shueyville UMC, we believe that being a follower of Jesus is a journey. It isn’t just worship, spiritual growth, or service. It’s all of those aspects combined that help us grow closer to Jesus. Take a look at the opportunities below and try to take in each of the areas of emphasis: Deeper Roots (worship), Stronger Branches (your personal faith), Bountiful Fruit (serving God and others).

Deeper Roots

Worship Times

All services are mask optional.

8:00 a.m. This service has traditional music and is a wonderful way to start the morning in worship. We will Live Stream parts of this service on Facebook.

9:30 a.m. This service is a blend of traditional and contemporary music.

Sunday School is offered during this service.

10:45 a.m. This service contains traditional elements that tie us together with our Christian tradition, but the music is contemporary. The environment is more relaxed and it is held in the Family Life Center.

Ecumenical Thanksgiving Worship Service

Being ecumenical means we believe in being connected with other churches around us. Shueyville UMC has a history of sharing in some fun celebrations, and a Thanksgiving Worship Service is one of them. Check it out and join the choir if you would like!

On November 20th at 7:00 p.m. St John’s Lutheran Church in Ely is hosting an ecumenical Thanksgiving worship service. This is going to be interactive and a great chance to take part in worship in a way that is family friendly and welcoming to all. Give it a try!

Stronger Branches

Part of growing in our faith is prayer. Please take a moment to pray for these people and situations, plus what is on your heart.

  • Steve Kinkead, battle with younger onset Alzheimer’s.
  • Kim York, prayers for her healing and comfort
  • Stephen Stepanek, as he battles brain cancer.
  • Kitty Brink, as she recovers from surgery.
  • Dick Lang, as he continues his battle with leukemia.
  • Dawson Jansa, 2 year-old grandson of Fred and Denise Walker who is battling pulmonary hypertension. Dawson needs prayers to stay healthy for his rescheduled surgery on November 29th.
  • Family of Myrt Patterson, as she passed away this week.
  • Family of Annelee Mahachek, as she passed away this week.
  • Our church family as we grieve.

Friends, Myrt and Annelee were long-time members who have

served this church for many years. They leave their mark on many

ministries and hearts in this church family. We will all miss them

greatly. And if you are newer to this fold, please know that these

saints helped prepare this place for you and your family. And they

LOVED that you chose to be a part of this church family.

Thank you for all the cards and prayers I received prior to my surgery. I appreciate them all so much. The surgery went well and I am home recuperating. Kitty Brink

Bountiful Fruit

Angel Tree: A Favorite Shueyville UMC Mission Tradition

Thank you for your generosity and taking an Angel Tree Tag. This will go a long way in brightening Christmas for families and pointing them to the love of Jesus. The tags are almost gone, but we might be getting a few more, so keep on the lookout for more opportunities.

The Tanager Place angel tree is in the church narthex to help collect gifts for the children Tanager Place serves and their families. Put gifts in a box if breakable. Don't wrap with gift wrap. Be sure the angel tag is attached to your gift. Bring to the church by Sunday, December 4th. Thank you for your help. If you would like a tag but aren’t present in church, one can be mailed to you. Please call Nancy Streeper at 848-4398.

Adult Mission Trip!

You know, our youth aren’t the only people who can go on mission trips! Adults can, too. We have some folks who have been on this Habitat for Humanity build for many years, but we want some new folks, too. It seems like a big jump to head off on a week long trip but you will make

a difference, encounter God’s love in your own heart as you spread it, and build great and lasting relationships. Pray about it and get signed up!

Early notice of the ACTION group trip to work with Marquette

Habitat for Humanity: We will go the week of June 24 - July 1. This is

a chance to get it on your summer calendar. If you are

interested and want to be kept in the loop please email Russ Husted.

Thanksgiving Food Baskets

Many of you have given to help make our Annual Thanksgiving Food Baskets for families in need in our community. Well, the need is bigger than we thought, and we now have 8 families in need of a basket. This includes 15 adults and 25 children. This is a rallying call for all to chip in and make a big difference and share the love of Jesus. You can buy non-perishable food or

you can donate ear-marked funds. Please have your contribution to the

church by 9:00 a.m. on Monday, as we will deliver these baskets later on Monday.

Christmas Market!

Get ready for the Christmas Market 2022. It will take place from 7:45-11:00 a.m. on Sunday, December 11th. This will include a variety of homemade baked goods and craft items, along with gift baskets for silent auction. Come hungry because we will also have a pancake and sausage breakfast for a free will donation

We want you to plan to be there AND invite a friend!

If you would like, we are also hoping people will join in by donating a gift basket or whatever you think people might like. Some of you are crafty and creative! We are thankful when you share those gifts at the market. For others, a fun gift basket can be a family affair to put together. There will be a sign-up at church if you know what you would like to bring, or let Pastor Brody know. Drop off for these items is Saturday, December 10th from 9-11:00 a.m. so we can set up for the event. If that doesn’t work, please let us know.

Ways to Continue to Financially Support SUMC

We pass the offering plate the first and third Sundays of each month and bring it forward for prayer. It is a good reminder that our giving is worship. Carrying the offering to the front of the church and thanking God is nothing to hide or be ashamed of. It ought to be celebrated! But there are a variety of ways you can give.

The offering plate is available each Sunday as you enter worship or is passed during worship.

We encourage Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) as a consistent way of giving. You can change or stop it at any time.

You can request, fill out, and return an EFT form. Some are also available on the table outside the sanctuary. We are more than happy to mail this to you.

You can also give on the website by clicking here.
