REFLECTING ON HANGING OF THE GREENS

We held our annual Hanging of the Greens service this past Sunday evening, and it held us. It held us in celebration. In amazement, in wonder, in enthrallment, in mystery, in hopefulness, in joy, and in gratitude — to name just a few moments of grace. But no summarization of the experience could be complete in so few words because each experience is unique to the soul that perceives it. From the youngest to the oldest person present, whether long-time or first-time attender or come from near or far, it is the nature of the human heart to be reachable by grace, like light in the darkness.

Our thanks go out to: Every volunteer, singer, ringer, player, or pray-er, director, leader, robe-wearer, robe-straightener, designer, decorator, holly-hauler, child-wrangler, lozenge-sharer, door-opener, greeter, fire-handler, fire-extinguisher, audio and light technician, print-designer, proof-reader, behind-the-scenes encourager, custodian, errand-runner, cookie-baker, food-preparer, punch-server, sweeper-upper, dishwasher, early-arriver and late-comer.

STEWARDSHIP UPDATE - GIVING GENEROUSLY WITH GRATITUDE

We are delighted to report that, as of November 30, we have received 109 pledges totaling $953,970.00 for the 2024 budget. We like to have 80% of the proposed budget pledged which means our goal is $1,306,063.20 (80% of the General Fund target of $1,632,579). This leaves us $352,093.20 short of the 80% goal, but we know we have not heard from a number of our members yet, and we are ahead of where we were this time last year.

We are grateful for those who have pledged, and we ask for the prayerful consideration of those who have not. You can find a pledge form in the church office, or just click here to go to the form on our website.

CARDINAL SINGERS PERFOR FOR

THIRTY-NINERS AND WEEKDAY PRESCHOOL

It was great to have the Cardinal Singers back again this year. Their voices are lovely and their music entertained those in the fellowship hall as well as the Hanging of the Greens workers in the Lewis Lobby. Two of their members were familiar to us: one of themClaire Sullivangrew up in our church, and the other was our own Kay Taylor. We also invited the weekday preschool children to come enjoy the music. The director gave them little instruments to play to accompany the piano and the singing. This was quite fun for all, as you can see in the pictures where all eyes are turned to the children. The Cardinal Singers stayed as our guests for lunch and of course we talked about when they will return next year! Nancy Moore Phillips, Thirty-Niners Program Chair

CHILD CARE-GIVERS DURING WORSHIP NEEDED!

We are in need of adults and youth who are interested in serving once a quarter to provide top-notch care for our preschoolers during worship (10:4512 noon). Folks interested must be church members or actively involved in the life of the church for at least six months.  You would know in advance your four dates for the year, and you can swap with others on the roster if one of your assigned dates doesn’t work with your schedule. Please contact Lynn as soon as possible if you’re interested.

AZAMAT RECOGNIZED

IN THE N&O

Azamat Allaiarov has been attending our church for a few years now. In addition to being a member of the Journey Sunday School class, he has helped with Toy Joy, assisted in the Clothing Ministry, and countless other churchwide activities. We were thrilled to see that he has been recognized for his work as an American sponsor through the program Uniting for Ukraine, where he has two Ukrainian men living with him in his apartment. Thanks to the News & Observer, his story is being told! You may read about it here.

COMMUNITY MEALS

As we approach Christmas, we want to provide an opportunity for our congregation to serve our neighbors a hot meal from And Also With 'Cue. The Helen Wright Center (3603 Bastion Lane) is an emergency shelter for single adult women experiencing homelessness and is a broader part of Urban Ministries, and they have been experiencing record numbers. This is one small way we can give back to our neighbors experiencing food insecurity, and a great way for families to serve together!

You can help us serve the women at the Center on Tuesday, December 12, 5:307:30pm. We'll be serving dinner to 65 women. We'll meet there, and begin setting up at 5:30pm. The meal is served at 6:30pm, and the entire shift will end around 7:30pm.

Please use the sign-up genius to RSVP, and email Leah with any questions!

DO YOU NEED OFFERING ENVELOPES?

Even as giving methods change, we continue to offer offering envelopes to those who request them. If you received offering envelopes this past year and wish to receive that same quantity again, you do not need to do anything. If you received envelopes this past year and wish to stop receiving them, please click here. If you wish to adjust the number of envelopes you received, please click here and indicate what amount of each envelope you would like to receive. If you have not received offering envelopes in the past but would like to have them for 2024, please click here and Wayne will contact you.
