Why Donate?
- The HRFA was arguably the first and most successful group to find polluters of the Hudson River and hold them accountable. We continue our mission to "Fight for the Hudson" to this very day.
- The HRFA is a 501c3 tax-exempt nonprofit organization. You need another charitable tax deduction don't you?
- All of our members are volunteers. No member of the Elected Board of Directors earns an income for all their hard work. Every penny donated goes to support our programs.

- Let us continue to offer scholarships for worthy college-bound high schoolers.
- Support the restoration of the world's first Riverkeeper vessel so it may take its rightful place in history. Perhaps, in a museum on the Hudson River; the river it protected for decades before its decommissioning.
- Help us realize our dream of having our own museum and meeting place in the Palisades Interstate Park. A beautiful historic place, one that can be shared with the public to enjoy as well.

The Hudson River Fishermen’s Association is a group of recreational fishermen who make active use of the N.Y. Bight and the surrounding water system and are concerned with the present and future state of these fisheries. We have many wonderful events & exciting guest speakers planned for the coming months. Scroll down through the newsletter to see what's ahead.
As covered in last month's issue, the HRFA's Hooked on the Hudson event took place after a 2-year hiatus due to COVID-19, on 30th of April. I would like to thank Peter Musse, the chairman of this year’s HOH, and all the volunteers that worked relentlessly and ensured the success of the event. This month we share some additional photos.
The 4th annual HRFA Fred Rung Memorial Catch, Tag & Release Striped Bass Derby is now over. I would like to sincerely thank the Derby Organizer, all participants and congratulate all the winners. Please see the detailed report & photos below.
The General meetings are being held, at the Elks Lodge. We are making the effort to also reach out to those not able to travel by live streaming the meetings. I would like to express our thanks to the May 10th presenter, Jim Hutchinson, the publisher/editor of The Fisherman magazine. He shared his experiences and satellite tagging program to help with better understanding of fish behavior, migration, etc. Jerry Crean & Joe Albanese were blessed with an invitation to participate in the Gray FishTag Research Northeast Striped Bass Tagging Expedition on May 12th.
The 2nd annual HRFA Saltwater Fly Fishing Derby, organized by Miguel Sardinas was a success. As a result, we are planning to expand the Annual HRFA Fishing Contest in 2023, to include new Fly Fishing Categories for both Salt & Freshwater.
We have successfully initiated the HRFA Fishing Clinics as part of the Youth Angler Program. We already had already two fishing programs for children with special needs organized by Wayne Geider and assisted by Tony DiModugno and Jeff Christie. At least two more similar events are scheduled in the coming weeks. Please look for the scheduling for when you can participate. We need YOU.

Earth Day was celebrated on a number of occasions. Back in April Arnie Ulrich, Dan Harrison, Joe Albanese and I represented the HRFA at the event organized by Bergen County Community College. Then on May 15th Marvin Oresky and I represented HRFA similarly at the Hackensack Riverkeeper's EarthFest event at the Overpeck Park. We took advantage of these events to introduce our organization to attendees and solicit new membership.
However, the weekend of May 21st and 22nd was the busiest of all:
- Wayne Geider, Arnie Ulrich, Kevin Morgan, and Pete Orenzo, participated in the Ridgefield Park celebration of Earth Day. It was reported that the children enjoyed a very rewarding fishing day.
- Janice Soto, Dave Mercer, and Antony Carbone joined me for the Waterford River Festival, a two-day event on the Hudson River at Lock #2 and Peebles Island. We conducted the Fishing Clinic to more than 30 families. They learned about fishing as well as the role and contributions of our organization. And of course, there were some notable fish caught.
- Past President Dan Harrison, his wife Eileen, Pete Musse and his wife Michelle, all represented the HRFA at the annual fair organized by the Liberty Landing Marina with our member/liaison Ivan Garcia. A fun day, introducing our organization to the attending guests and vendors.
During that weekend there was also some time for play. Stephanie Hess, Mona Mak, Scott Havner, Joe Albanese, Carl Bruger and Al White did some remarkable fishing on the Niagara River and Lake Erie. Some noteworthy catches were submitted in the HRFA Fishing Contest from that excursion by Stephanie, Mona and Carl. See the updated standings at the end of the newsletter. At the HRFA board meetings we continue to review our plans and strategies. As always, we appreciated your suggestions for meeting topics and fishing events. From our last board meeting, I would like to bring to your attention a few items.
We have been discussing the status of our volunteers. We are in an increased need for dedicated members to participate and take lead in our activities. Sadly, we have lost some of the most reliable, and others like me, are getting up in age. We appeal to our general membership to step-up and help.

Reviewing our current financial status, we came to the realization that the HRFA funding is in need. We appreciate the donations, and fund-raising efforts, but to help support the numerous commitments and programs we have to consider increasing the membership dues. At the last General Membership meeting we presented the suggested membership dues of $35, $40 or $45, for consideration and feedback. We will be finalizing and deciding at the upcoming HRFA Board meeting. Please note that the HRFA dues have not changed for over 30 years.
The Outdoors/Sportsmen Show is scheduled for: Garden State, Edison NJ: 10-13 August 2022. We need your help fo this single event and are seeking some volunteer(s) to head a committee for these events.
I would like to thank Dirk van Everdingen who relentlessly worked to raffle off custom-made outdoors grill and raised $1000 for our organization. We appreciate the Grill donation by Chris Limbardo, of the Engineering Devices Corporation.
We are receiving invitations to participate in Youth Fishing Programs/clinics of our Friends/organizations. As the schedules are confirmed, we will be reaching out for volunteers. Look for schedule in the newsletter.

As the restrictions of COVID-19 pandemic are fading out, our organization continues to function successfully, and thanks to our dedicated members activities are increasing. I would like to take this opportunity the express my sincere appreciation.
Also, I would like to remind those members, especially the recipients of the HRFA prestigious “Pete Barrett” award, that is expected from them to continue their efforts and contributions, to the best of their abilities. We are a charitable organization, we provide our services to many, and we expect our members to participate and support us, accordingly.

We will hear from Ross Kushner of the NJ Coastal Alliance. He is leading more than 20 environmental, conservation and land preservation groups in the opposition to beach replenishment along the New Jersey oceanfront. |
|
As the former director of a watershed protection group in northern New Jersey he is familiar with conservation issues and campaigns. As an avid saltwater angler and surfer, the health of the ocean and coastline is important to him.
The Army Corps of Engineers beach replenishment projects have caused great damage to marine ecosystems, and created dangerous conditions for anglers, swimmers, surfers, and other beachgoers. Over several decades these projects have piled almost 130 million cubic yards of sand on the NJ beaches. Migratory species like striped bass, following the coast on their way to the Hudson River, are deeply impacted by the devastation of ocean life.
A number of organizations, including HRFA, have banded together to form the New Jersey Coastal Alliance in opposition to these coastal projects. Kushner’s presentation will cover this joint opposition, why it is so necessary, and how HRFA and its members can help.

The Fred Rung Memorial Catch, Tag & Release Striped Bass Derby
April 16 - May 15, 2022

We had more anglers tagging fish than ever before. The combined total of the 11 taggers was 154 stripers. Chris Palmer had the most tags again with 76 this year. We will offer a prize for the angler who reports the first recapture of a striper tagged in this year's Derby. |

For over 20 years, Fred Rung was a very dedicated HRFA member. He served as HRFA Vice President with Gil Hawkins (President 2014-16) and a Director. He was an educator and his experience and skills helped pioneer the HRFA website together with his mentor Charles Stamm (President 1996-98).
For his dedication and valuable contributions, he received the highest HRFA honor, the Pete Barrett Award, in 2013.
Fred Rung passed away in March 2020. We still miss his friendship, dedication and wisdom,

This year we had many more large fish entered. The prolonged winds made fishing the river difficult and the water murkier than usual. Anglers fishing further north seemed to be doing better. Especially in the final week. The Derby paid out a total of $2,875.00 in cash prizes to eight winners. The big winner this year was Douglas Dean. Douglas entered the largest fish all but the last week. Scott Havner's 2nd Place finish won that week. It also was largest from shore. Doug was entered into the Calcutta, tagged more than 10 stripers (14) AND he tagged the largest striper too! So, his 1st Place finish wins a combined total of $1,450.00 along with other prizes. We were so happy to have Jim Hutchinson, Editor of The Fisherman spend time with us this past month. As a bonus, Roxane Wilner and Bill Dobbelaer, both of Gray FishTag Research, tagged along. Pun intended. Roxanne & Bill also provided additional insight on the northeast striped bass study that Jim presented. The trio made a good tag team. (There I go again!) Gray FishTag Research (GFR) is a 501(c)(3) Non-profit organization.

The Northeast Striped Bass Tagging Expedition

It was a pleasant surprise to be invited by event organizer Roxanne Wilner to actually go out and tag stripers aboard one of the boats participating in the tagging expedition. While none of the stripers caught by Jerry Crean or Joe Albanese received a satellite tag ($5,000 each) they did get to use Gray FishTag Research's short dart-style green spaghetti tags inserted under the scales above the lateral line and below the dorsal fins. |

At the obligatory Captain's meeting held at a micro-brewery on the eve of the expedition (tough work if you can get it) gift bags went to the 7 captains whose boats, time & talents were donated to the cause. The bags included the Save a Million Bass bumper stickers and the 16" ARC DEHOOKERS (shown in the photo) donated by the HRFA and Riverkeeper. |

We invited all members and their guests to join the HRFA's Fly Fishing Derby. The Derby intends to inspire the interest and growth of saltwater fly fishing within the HRFA. The Derby was a catch-photo-release, fly-fishing-only |

The second annual derby was on May 14th at Sandy Hook NJ. The predicated temps for the day were low 60’s with the wind blowing SW and overcast. Perfect conditions for casting flies in back bay waters of Sandy Hook. Joe Albanese wins the derby. The fish was a healthy beautiful 22” striped bass. Great job Joe! and keep up the good work.

Ridgefield Park Earth Day/ Green Fair

Steve Quinn, Chairman of The Ridgefield Park Environmental Commission, invited us back to their annual event. Why? Because the kids and community love the fishing derby we run. This was a wonderful opportunity to get kids "hooked on fishing, not on drugs" and to raise awareness of the HRFA.
Youth Angler Program Chair Wayne Geider, Arnie Ulrich, Kevin Morgan, Pete Orenzo, Tony DiModugno. and Skip Wisniewski were on hand.

The Waterford Canal Festival
Saturday-Sunday, May 21-22.
|
The festival lined Tugboat Alley in Waterford, with live music, craft food vendors, kids activities and dance. Boat rides were hosted from the visitor center and Lock E2 Park on both days. A kids’ fishing clinic was run by the Hudson River Fishermen’s Association.
Members Janice Soto, Dave Mercer and Antony Carbone joined President Aram H. Setian at the event.

The marina hosted their annual vendor showcase from 11:00am – 3:00pm. Dan Harrison & Pete Musse were there to represent the HRFA. That is Dan Harrison with Jeff Sublett of Boating on the Hudson in the photo. Jeff homeschooled his daughter who went on to graduate at the top of her class at Yale!

On the morning of May 25th Pete & Michelle Musse's little girl Marissa delivered a beautiful baby boy into the world. Giovanni Luca Viera (now THAT'S Italian) will be treasured by everyone. Mother & child are doing well. Congratulations to all - his parents Dan Viera and Marissa, grandparents & uncles Peter & Dalas Musse.
Now, get that boy a fishing pole. What? Too soon?

LAKE ONTARIO REPORT – SPRING HAS SPRUNG!

All sorts of fish are biting during the April to May feed fest that anglers will encounter on Lake Ontario. Delectable white and yellow perch filled half my bucket with 26 fish over nine inches and up to seventeen in
under an hour of worm fishing off my dock.
More than half the time I had double headers and the catch was far less time than it took to fillet and pass the delectable
morsels to grateful neighbors.
I saved some smaller specimens for cut chunk bait and the next evening was rewarded with four huge channel cats that tipped the scales at 15, 18 and twins of 22 pounds each!
Just this month the new state record was set in Black River Bay within sight of our home by a Watertown native, Bailly Williams. He also made the haul by using a perch head to land the record monster
weighing 35 pounds 11 ounces! Good news for my four captured cats! Every whopper was side looked in its blubbery lip by size 8 Gamagatsu circle hooks enabling a quick and efficient release after a quick photo of the twins. Williams also freed his state record after all data was recorded.
Other monster sized fish are in the lake waiting to be caught. I have landed carp, salmon, and Lake trout well over thirty pounds. With pike, walleye, sheepshead,
bowfin and steelhead all reaching double digit amounts and sturgeon topping 100 lbs. (they must be immediately released). Anglers better be sure their tackle is in perfect working order.
The weirdest catch off my dock this spring so far was the eight pound bowfin that I thought was a gargantuan pike. This 200 million year old dinosaur descendant has two layers of skull, an armored body and
gulps air when it needs extra oxygen. I never heard of a fish with more local names. Researched articles told me that you would only eat this creature if you were close to starving.
The Latin name Amia Cava locks the
identification but local folks all over the country have been known to call them spot fish, mud trout, mud pike, swamp Muskie, spot tail, freshwater barracuda, grinnel
and grindel. It looks almost like the invasive snakehead but can easily be distinguished by the false “eye spot” near its tail. My thrashing specimen stretched 26 ½ inches and was four pounds under the NY state record. The world record was caught in South Carolina and stretched the scales to 21 pounds!

On the other side of Ontario stretching into Lake Erie, all six HRFA members experienced quality sized smallmouth bass fishing with the Chris Cinelli charter group.
Organizer Scott Havner, Stephanie Hess, Joe Albanese, Mona Mak, Al White and this scribe landed many lunker bronze backs over two windy days on the water.
My best beauty, a rugby ball thick with eggs
female, measured twenty inches and was released with all the other fish we caught. Our second day Lake Erie guide, Peter Goretti, estimated it could push six pounds.
The day before on the Niagara River below the falls my dozen landings had a couple of cows at 19 inches. Our guide that day was Connor Cinelli, son of Chris who we’ve known since the early 90’s fishing with the late great HRFA member and dear friend,
Darren Cardinal. I was paired with my old friend since the 1970’s, Al White, and we landed nothing but quality smallmouths with almost every fish over three pounds.
The ladies in the group caught the biggest fish with Stephanie landing a 13lb. 8oz. lake trout and Mona tackled a huge 14lb. 8oz. sheepshead!
We are eager to return for walleye this summer if not steelhead in the fall.

What is HRFA Free Money? Are you a paid member.?
At every HRFA in person meeting, half of the HRFA portion of the 50/50 money goes into a virtual jar. At the end of the meeting, a paid HRFA members name is picked (from a jar of all paid HRFA members) to receive the money. The name is announced three times. If the HRFA paid member is not present, the money goes back into the jar for the next months meeting. The process continues and is repeated at the next HRFA meeting.
HRFA Free money (split 50/50) for May 10th meeting was $61.00. From the bucket of HRFA paid members, a name was picked at the meeting by brand new member Daniel Ekmekjian.
HRFA member name Ricky Taliaferro was picked and announced to all present three times. Ricky Taliaferro was not there, so the HRFA free money goes back into the bucket. Note: Treasurer holds the HRFA free money, whatever the amount.
Will you be there at the June HRFA meeting to collect the HRFA free money?

Pay your dues. Get your 2022 membership card.
The generous grace period ended for renewals on March 31st. Those not renewed are on the stale list and are removed from the membership rolls. Note , If you do not have a 2022 or life time membership card , you are not a HRFA member.
For those people who join(ed) the HRFA in October (or later) of a given year, their new or renewal membership also is covered for the following new year. There is also a generous grace period (3 months) for those who are unable to update their membership in January, however paying your dues late puts a strain on the records maintenance and consequently the ability of the executive board’s planning of activities and events.

On May 21 & 22 HRFA members Carl Bruger, Joe Albanese, Mona Mak, Stephanie Hess, Scott Havner, & Al White fished Lake Erie and the Niagara River. The trip included a couple of wine tastings at local vineyards. Fishing & wine - perfect together!

Members Dirk VanEverdingen, Aram Setian, Marvin Oresky, Rich Wheeler and the newest new guy Dan Ekmekjian fished May 26th on the XTC out of Belmar. It was epic!
The action was HOT trolling Bunker Spoons & Mojos. At one point they had 3 fish on the lines at the same time. The group caught over 35 stripers all between 42-45". So no keepers. Boo hoo. Around 11 AM a GIANT tuna over 400 lbs. grabbed a lure and broke off soon after with no problem. Exciting to witness though. Especially considering that they were well within the 3-mile limit. They rounded out the day targeting sea bass, ling and cod for the dinner tables.
