A message from Pastor Will Malambri
|
|
I concluded my sermon on Sunday, “When you examine your life in light of who Jesus is in your life, who and how do you want to be as his disciple?” Since it was New Year’s Day, I wished I had asked it this way: If you were to let Jesus make your resolutions for this year, what would they be?
That is an essential question because it helps reveal what you understand about Jesus and about his call on your life as his follower. It helps move the thought from “What will Jesus do for me?” to “In light of what Jesus has done and is doing for me, what would he like me to do for him?” Or, to use some Biblical language, “What is my end of the covenant?”
Since God and Abraham entered into the initial covenant, our ancestors have made commitments to God. To be sure, we have always received more than we’ve given, but, like any meaningful relationship, we have been expected to give and not just receive.
Every Sunday (really, every day!) we have an opportunity to recommit to our covenant with God. Often at the start of the year, we give extra attention to this. Not only is this a time when our culture thinks about new starts and resolving to do better, it is also when the Church reflects on Jesus’ baptism. As we think about that expression of a deeply covenanted relationship with God, it gives us time to think about our baptisms and the covenant we have entered into with God.
In each of our worship services this Sunday, there will be an opportunity to remember our baptisms and recommit ourselves to trust and follow Jesus.
In the sanctuary services, we will add more formality to this by participating in a Wesley Covenant Renewal Service. John Wesley designed the liturgy in 1755 and Methodists have been guided by it since. To give you a feel for it, the Friday prayer for this week is the short version. Click here to read more about the Wesley Covenant Prayer. In the sanctuary services, we’ll use the longer version, which includes more liturgy. There will also be short reflections on the covenant.
All of this is designed to help us honor the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ by reflecting our desire to submit to his will as his devoted disciples. In other words, to let Jesus make our resolutions.
So be it,

Friday Unity Prayer
Follow along in prayer with us every Friday at noon.
I am no longer my own but yours. Put me to what you will, rank me with whom you will. Put me to doing, put me to suffering. Let me be employed for you or laid aside for you, exalted for you or brought low for you. Let me be full, let me be empty. Let me have all things, let me have nothing. I freely and wholeheartedly yield all things to your pleasure and disposal.
And now, glorious and blessed God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, you are mine and I am yours. So be it. And the covenant now made on earth, let it be ratified in heaven. Amen.

Candle Lighting Services Offerings
$30,864.42 Collected!
|
All offerings collected at our Candle Lighting Services will go to support the restoration of a home of a Murrells Inlet resident. After decades of neglect, the home of our neighbor had to be emptied and gutted. Plumbing has been installed and the wiring reworked. Painting has recently been completed and cabinets and flooring will be completed this week. The generous service by several Belin members and the generous offerings of over $30,800 show God's presence at Belin Memorial.
People have been asking, “How can I help?” One of our faithful volunteers has put together a list of items that can be purchased. Click HERE for the registry. If you have something that is not on the list contact Lauren Griffith (843.222.8751). Again, the love shown for this family, truly shows God is working here!

Prayers and Concerns
Almighty God, shield of the oppressed, hear us as we pray for the friendless and the lonely, the tempted and the unbelieving. Be merciful to those who suffer, in body and mind, to those who are in danger or distress, and who have suffered loss. Let your love surround the infirm and the aged. Be especially near to those who are passing through the valley of death. May they find eternal rest, and light at evening time.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
