Flora & Waking Worlds Opening Weekend


Jan 27-29. Party. Tour. Read. Watch. Listen. Play. Plan your weekend in Winona, Minnesota, joining us to mark the opening of three new exhibitions, all under the theme of Flora, and the debut of MMAM’s new literary arts gallery, Waking Worlds: Wondrous Reads for Curious Minds. Featuring the First Look Preview Party (Friday, January 27 7p-10p), Members & Media Day (Saturday, January 28), and Family Day (Sunday, January 29). Kick off our 2023 Season. Something for everyone.

Book Signing with Author & Illustrator of New York Times Bestseller, World of Wonders


Jan 28. Meet the creators of "hands-down one of the most beautiful books of the year" (NPR) - illustrator, Fumi Nakamura, and author, Aimee Nezhukamatatil - as they read and share samples from the book World of Wonders: In Praise of Fireflies, Whale Sharks, and Other Astonishments (Milkweed Editions).

Frozen River Film Festival @MMAM = Water Set


Feb 5. Catch a 90-minute curated set of four short documentaries that highlights what draws us to water. Featuring Freshwater, an odyssey that "captures Lake Superior's surf culture" (MN Monthly), Little Stream, Big Magic, a "heartwarming story of people's resilience and commitment to conservation" (Tandem Stills + Motion), LOON, a passionate characterization of Mike Freed's goal to preserve 2,000 acres adjacent the Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness Area, and The Wintering Grounds a hyped portrait of one of the most amazing urban paddling destinations in North America, if not the world. Presented in partnership with the Frozen River Film Festival.

Flora & Fauna of the Driftless Printmaking Class


Mar 25-26. Investigate the methods of relief woodblock printmaking. This 2-day class, taught by Winona-based artist and educator, Matthew Wagner, is created for all levels. The workshop will introduce the basics of creating a multicolor woodblock print. Inspired by the flora and fauna of the Driftless region - referencing the steep bluffs and valleys surrounding the museum, left relatively untouched during the last ice age - kicks off MMAM's fledgling new studio arts programming based out of the museum's Oberton Education Room. Come for the artwork. Stay to create.

Driftless: Sam Amidon Riverside

 

May 20. Catch a one of a kind, site specific outdoor musical concert riverside, featuring Sam Amidon and the Winona Symphony Orchestra. Amidon who “stages a polyglot conversation among folk, classical and jazz” (Pitchfork) ensembles an all star cast of composers - Katherine Bergman, Manami Kakudo, and Darian Donovan Thomas (all first-time collaborators) - as well as both new and old orchestrations by Nico Muhly, to produce a program that highlights new explorations into traditional American music amidst the spectacular backdrop of the Mississippi. Waking Worlds - Wondrous Reads for Curious Minds

 

All Year (Opening Jan 27). Explore MMAM's new literary arts gallery - a dedicated space to celebrate and amplify the work of today's most ambitious authors and illustrators centering their work on water, and our connections to it. The Stephen and Barbara Slaggie Family Gallery re-opens with an installation that taps into the ageless beauty of wonder and our search for it in nature, both near and far. The exhibition brings together three lauded and celebrated books turned exhibition experiences: World of Wonders (Milkweed Editions), "a book about nature that is so much more (New York Times), and Wake Up, Island and Hush, Hush, Forest (University of Minnesota Press).

Courtney Mattison: Undercurrent


May 6 - Sep 3. Get inspired by the large-scale wall installations created by San Francisco-native Courtney Mattison. Mattison's work has graced the covers of lauded publications like Oprah Magazine, Smithsonian Magazine, Elle and American Craft, and have been featured on Good Morning America, BBC and CNN. Undercurrent will be the most comprehensive installation of her work to date. Mattison creates intricate and large-scale ceramic sculptural works that visualize climate change through the fragile beauty of marine life.

Liz Sexton: Out of Water


May 6 - Sep 3. Tip your head back in awe (and joyful laughter) as Minneapolis-based Liz Sexton brings the "perfect medium of our times" (New York Times Style Magazine) to MMAM this summer.

Kao Kalia Yang Story Share

Oct 11. Take in a powerful and heart-warming gallery performance by Kao Kalia Yang, who brings "Hmong storytelling into the American Canon" (Twin Cities PBS), "packed with the stuff of life" (Entertainment Weekly). Author of The Latehomecomer (Coffee House Press), The Song Poet (Metropolitan Press), and numerous children's books, Kalia has been recognized for her work by the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Chautauqua Prize, and the PEN USA literary awards, amongst others. Tickets and details released this spring. Stay tuned. Presented in partnership with the Sandbar Stortyelling Festival.
