One year ago today, our community was shattered by the horrific mass shooting at the Santa Clara Valley Transportation (VTA) rail yard. My heart goes out to the families and friends of the victims for whom this tragedy will undoubtedly leave devastating scars. I also want to express my deep appreciation for the brave responders, our Police Officers, Fire Fighters, Fire and Police Dispatchers, Medical Personnel and others who assisted, and continue to assist, in helping our community heal.

Last year, San Jose joined a long list of cities that have experienced mass shootings, a list which continues to grow each day. Less than two weeks ago, Buffalo, New York and earlier this week, the community Uvalde, Texas became the latest victims. 19 children were killed. The pain and suffering that their families, friends and neighbors must endure is incalculable. The lingering effect on that community is unimaginable.

We cannot accept murder, particularly the murder of children, as normal in a civilized society.

You can make a direct donation to support local victims on gun violence, including those affected by the VTA tragedy, here.

Future Paving Projects in District 4

I'm excited to announce a number of future road work projects that are coming to District 4. Among those will be road improvement, traffic calming, safety, speed reduction and sideshow deterrent projects aimed at creating streets that are safer and more drivable.

Below, highlighted in orange, are areas in the northeast section of the district that will be seeing improvements and repaving this summer.

The current goal is to pave over 300 miles worth of city streets in 2022, 50 of which is held over from previous paving projects suspended due to winter weather. The Department of Transportation plans to pave over 1,500 miles of city streets by 2028 with much of that being in District 4.

The section of Murphy/Brokaw near the 880 and 101 interchange will also being seeing improvements this summer.

SERVE YOUR COMMUNITY BY APPLYING TO A BOARD OR COMMISSION (UPDATED)

The City of San Jose is always on the lookout for residents who have an interest in joining a board or commission. Their purpose is to advise the city council and to provide ongoing input into policies and issues that affect the future of our City. Applications are accepted year round and if you'd like to be more civically engaged, I'm sure there's a board or commission that matches your interests. Visit here to see a full list.

We are currently in search of applicants for the Planning Commission, Library and Education Commission, and Youth Commission. This commission serves as one of the most vital and foundational advisory bodies to the City Council and staff. This commission deals with General Plan amendments, rezonings, tentative maps, appeals of environmental impact reports, and more. Please email my office if you have any further questions. You can also apply directly by going here.

In addition, we have a vacancy on the Library and Education Commission. We will be accepting applications over the next few weeks so we can appoint somebody by the end of June.

The Berryessa Community Center is also in need of board members. The last 2 years of pandemic have created unique challenges for the community center and we're looking for new leadership to help spearhead efforts to evolve existing programs and create new ones that reflect the changing needs and requirements of the community. Please email Karen Aguirre if you're interested in being a Board Member.
