A letter from Mrs. Mares
Dear Notre Dame of De Pere Families,

As January wraps up, there are a lot of exciting things on the horizon!

Next week is Catholic Schools Week! We look forward to celebrating the strength of our faith and academics as a Catholic School with many fun activities, dress down days, and service projects with our students next week. Monday will launch our school-wide drive for Longs Johns for St. Johns, collecting blankets and other warm winter gear for adults served by the St. John Homeless shelter. This initiative was started last year by Delaney Gallagher, NDDP alumni and current student at NDA. Make sure to check out the flier and calendar below for more information.

If you have not been to mass in awhile, this would be a beautiful weekend to start a late New Years Resolution of attending mass more regularly. Our parishes are vibrant communities with joyful masses led by Fr. Mike and Fr. Matt and so many familiar faces ready to welcome all through the doors. Students are invited to wear their uniforms this weekend in celebration of Catholic Schools Week and may stop at the cookie tables to pick up a No-Uniform-Today (NUT) card for future use. We are also looking for families to serve cookies at each of the weekend masses. Please consider signing up to show your support and gratitude for our parishes! Enrollment for the 2022-2023 school year officially begins on Sunday, January 30th with reenrollment emails making their way to current families a bit earlier in batches beginning on January 28th. You are encouraged to complete this process early on to help us solidify class numbers and navigate new enrollments in a balanced manner. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call our office for help. Thank you to all who have also shared their child’s successes with friends, neighbors, and family. The best marketing tool for any school of choice is word of mouth from current stakeholders and alumni.

Finally, just a short note on the topic of COVID. (Note, it’s moving further down the list! This has to be a good sign!) We saw a significant change in protocol this month as we shifted to mask-optional. We have closely monitored school numbers, had a handful of classes required to mask for short periods of time, and consistently maintained numbers within the range of what has been “normal” for our school in the past 1.5 years. At the time of writing this letter, our overall positive and close contact numbers are actually the best they have been since early October. The monthly COVID update for February will be published on Friday but will not mark any changes from our current protocols. Thank you for your continued diligence, patience, and trust.

Wisconsin Tax Deduction for Tuition Expense
Wisconsin Tax Deduction for Tuition Expense
Tax legislation signed into law gives Wisconsin taxpayers the opportunity to deduct private school tuition expenses from their taxable income. A subtraction from income is allowed for tuition expenses that are paid for any of the GRACE schools. Parents/guardians are eligible for a maximum deduction of $4,000 per child in grades K-8 and $10,000 per child in grades 9-12. Students transitioning from eighth to ninth grade are eligible for both deductions. Per state guidance, any amount spent on tuition and book fees are eligible for the deduction. Book fees include digital books, such as laptops or tablet fees issued by the school.

Tuition tax credit information is available to GRACE families online via GRACE’s enrollment management system, TADS. The TADS Household Paid Tuition Tax Report will provide a breakdown of payments made for the specified household’s tuition account during the tax year. When gathering information for tax preparation, GRACE families are to access their TADS account | select Billing | Billing Account Number | Reports | Household Paid Tuition Tax Report | enter the tax year (i.e. 2021) and submit. Happy 2022! Hope your new year is off to a fantastic start! My year is off to a great start, though I will be happy to see these really cold temperatures go away. I enjoy winter, just not the bitter cold.

I just wanted to share a few things that have been going on in my classes. Before Christmas, we talked about gratitude and being grateful for what we have. In addition we discussed empathy and putting yourself in someone else’s shoes. Realizing that at times, others may struggle and/or may not have the things we do.

In January, our focus has been academic success. Lessons involving what a successful student looks like were part of our discussions. Also, now that we are midway through the school year, students are identifying ways they can improve to be the best students they can be. Each grade level had different lessons targeted around these concepts and many set goals to work on.

As always, please feel free to reach out if you have a concern with your child that I may be able to help with. I am available at Notre Dame of De Pere on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and by email the other days. Stay warm!

A Big Thank You!!!
Thank you so much to everyone who donated to the St. John’s Meal that took place on Monday, January 24th. With your donations we were able to provide the St. John’s residents a meal of tavern burgers, fresh fruit, chips, green beans and brownies. A special thank you to Audrey Moulton made over 40 lbs of meat for the tavern burgers that were served for the meal. Also, a big thank you to Mrs. Kopp, Audrey Moulton and Shannon Metzler for volunteering their time to serve the meal on Monday night.

A big thank you to everyone who donated an item and/or money towards the meal, prepared an item for the meal or who helped serve. We couldn’t have made this possible without you all.
Free COVID tests available
The US government launched the website https://www.covidtests.gov/ this week and will send 4 free at home COVID tests to each household. We are sharing this as purely informational, if you are interested.
