’Tis the season for giving! Thank you to all who donated to the Military Women’s Memorial during Giving Tuesday last month. With your help, over $10,000 was raised in support of MWM and our important mission - to tell the stories of women’s service to the nation. As a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization, your support is critical to our ongoing operations and mission to honor and tell the story of every woman who has served in our nation's defense.

As the year comes to an end, we want to take this opportunity to thank each and every member of this community for your commitment and support of MWM throughout the year. From our 25th Anniversary Celebration to traveling the country alongside our interactive “Color of Freedom” exhibit, our most dedicated supporters have been there every step of the way. Thank you, and we look forward to continuing to uplift and honor the stories and contributions of women to the Armed Forces in the year to come!

It is an honor to continue to highlight the stories of the many servicewomen who have defended our country. Help us celebrate their accomplishments by registering your service today.

A Message From The President

Greetings and happy holidays. This is a season of many blessings and your Military Women’s Memorial team is especially grateful to our members, friends and supporting organizations for their generosity and support throughout the past year. We are, indeed, counting our blessings. None of what we do to honor and tell the story of women’s service to the nation would be possible without you. Thank you, thank you!

We’re delighted to bring you the December 2022 edition of The Register. You’ll find information about upcoming events such as the December 17 “National Wreaths Across America” day and how you can participate in this meaningful annual event. We’ve also featured opportunities for you to complete your holiday shopping with unique MWM merchandise. Check out the 12-days of Christmas “shop-a-thon” for a great way to save while you shop.

You’ll also find lots of pictures from the 25th Anniversary Celebration – I’ve gotten so many thoughtful cards and messages from those of you who attended. Also included is a recap of the 25th annual Veterans Day program; and a piece about a special art demonstration and exhibition launch hosted by the Memorial.

As we close out 2022, please accept my heartfelt thanks for all that you do throughout the year to support your memorial – from registering eligible women and helping them take their rightful and visible place in history, to supporting our fundraising efforts, attending events, and so much more. Thanks to you, for more than 25 years there has been a place that honors the contributions of military women and tells their stories of service. Thank you for your confidence in us to be good shepherds of your memorial and your generosity. We look forward to the next 25 years of honoring military women with you.

Wishing you a wonderful holiday season and a happy new year.

PS: An end of year gift to the Military Women’s Memorial can be a great tax deduction. Also, the 2022-2023 Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) runs through Jan. 14, 2023. If you are currently serving, a federal employee, or a retiree and you give through CFC, please consider including the Military Women’s Memorial (#11350) as one of the worthy charities you designate.

Very Respectfully,

Phyllis J. Wilson

New in the Military Women's Memorial Collection

One of our newest acquisitions at the Military Women's Memorial is a testimony of selfless service during one of the most hard-fought battles of World War II—the Battle of Anzio.

The Battle of Anzio, January 22, 1944 to June 5, 1944, began with the Allied amphibious landing known as Operation Shingle, and raged on until ending with the unopposed march into Rome. During the five-month battle, German forces on the high ground above the beachhead showered the Allies with artillery fire. The area became known as “Hell’s Half Acre.”  Over two hundred Army nurses served at Anzio of whom six were killed during the fighting. Among the danger and horror, though, emerged stories of bravery, sacrifice, and courage.

One of those stories is that of First Lieutenant Anne (Zadylak) Krohe. Anne joined the Army Nurse Corps in March 1942, and served with the 93rd Evacuation Hospital in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and Germany. For her service at the Battle of Anzio, Anne was awarded the Bronze Star.

The citation for her award, issued on May 5, 1944, reads,

“For heroic achievement in action on 29 March 1944, near Anzio, Italy. During an enemy bombing raid, incendiary bombs were dropped in a hospital area, causing considerable casualties and extensive damage to equipment. One bomb landed near the tent in which First Lieutenant Zadylak was on duty, and fragments and burning magnesium pierced the canvas. First Lieutenant Zadylak was thrown to the ground by the initial explosion, but she immediately arose and went to work administering first aid to the wounded in her ward tent. Although two subsequent explosions showered the tent with metal fragments and blazing magnesium and set fire to nearby cans of diesel oil, she continued her task with complete disregard for her personal safety. Her courageous performance under fire contributed to the prevention of panic among the patients. Entered military service from Everson, Pennsylvania. /Signed Mark W. Clark, Lieutenant General, U.S. Army, Commanding”

Thank you to the Krohe family for donating First Lieutenant Anne (Zadylak) Krohe’s memorabilia to the Military Women’s Memorial and allowing us to tell her story. Your donation significantly enhances our mission and our ability to tell these important stories of service, sacrifice, and heroism.

Her Story: "My most memorable experience was being in the training department at Ft. Oglethorpe, GA in December 1943. A unit of WAAC's was waiting to be sent overseas, but was detained until after Christmas. I knew we needed to celebrate Christmas day, so with permission from the owner, the Auxiliaries cut a beautiful pine tree and then we needed decorations. So we popped corn and made strings of it and also strings of cranberries; for icicles we cut strips from gallon tin cans and twirled them around and around and hung them on the tree. It was beautiful. We then sang Christmas songs and we talked about the "Birth of Jesus." This vividly comes to my memory every Christmas."

Service Dates: Air Force 1976-1980; Air Force 1981-2005

Her Story: "I remember my first Christmas in the Air Force. I was assigned to weekend duty. The weekend duty crew was also responsible for "stand-by" on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Sure enough, we were called out around 10 p.m. on Christmas Eve. It was cold and snowing but a transit C-141 had stopped for gas. Being new to the world of airplanes, I hoped for a chance to tour the plane. My team leader asked the crew chief of the transit plane if he would give me a tour and of course he obliged. To this day I wished he had said no. The only thing on that big cargo plane was a single coffin with an American flag draped over it. They were taking a soldier home for Christmas. I didn't join the Air Force for patriotism; I joined to get out of that small town in Maine and see the world. I lost a lot of my naivety that night. For on that Christmas Eve I felt I had truly seen the world."

MWM Holiday Hours & Closures

December 23 – 26, 2022

This year, due to the holiday falling on December 25th and 26th, and traditionally reduced visitation as people travel for the holidays, the Military Women’s Memorial will close December 23 – 26.

After enjoying some downtime with our families for the holidays, our team looks forward to welcoming you back to the Memorial on December 27th. In observance of the new year, the Memorial will also be closed on January 1st.

Early January Closure

The Memorial will be closed for major repairs to our HVAC system for approximately 10 days, starting on or close to January 2nd. The safety of our visitors and staff is our priority. Excessive noise, dust, and an active construction environment at the beginning of this project will require that we close. While this much-needed work will continue through the end of February, we will be able to reopen to the public on or about January 12th.

We apologize for any inconvenience this closure may cause. For updated information regarding closures, please visit our website. While the Memorial is closed, please continue to take advantage of our online virtual tour, educational resources, and videos on our YouTube channel - don't forget to subscribe!

Veterans Day 2022

Thank you to all who joined us for the Military Women's Memorial's 25th Annual Veterans Day Ceremony. This year's Veterans Day program included formal military honors, a keynote address from Women In Military Service For America Memorial Foundation Board Chair, retired Major General Jeanette (Jan) Edmunds, a 32-year veteran of the U.S. Army.

We were honored to hear remarks from military women, past and present, representing each of the services, as well as view wreath-layings by several military and veteran service organizations.

Our Battlefields - US Launch of French-American Art Exhibition

We had the distinct honor of hosting acclaimed French artist Elo de la Ruë du Can at the Memorial on November 30th for the US launch of the international exhibition Nos champs de bataille – Our Battlefields, an art exhibition honoring the service and sacrifice of our French, British and American veterans.

The initiative of Madame de la Ruë du Can, Our Battlefields began four years ago when she suffered a catastrophic back injury and was hospitalized at les Invalides Paris, an historic castle built in the center of Paris by Louis XIV as a tribute and symbol of gratitude for the nation’s veterans. During her rehabilitation, the artist befriended wounded French soldiers and pensioners who were living there. So taken with them, she was compelled to capture the setting, the resiliency of the veterans, and the humanity of the medical teams in paintings and portraits. Her work was so well received, she replicated the project at the Royal Hospital Chelsea in London where more than 300 veterans from the UK are treated and live. Now, she has traveled to the US to include America’s warriors in the project.

During the program at the Memorial, Madame de la Ruë du Can painted the portraits of selected Purple Heart recipients, two of whom were women, as well as military medical personnel as they told their stories of service. Plans are to bring these portraits, and others that will be added to the collection over the coming months, to the American public in the spring of 2023 in exhibitions in Washington, DC, and New York.

It was fitting that the Military Women’s Memorial, the gateway to America’s most hallowed ground, serve as the US launch site for this meaningful project honoring battlefield heroes, especially given the Memorial’s mission of telling the stories of service. It was our pleasure to host the launch in cooperation with the French Embassy, American Battle Monuments Commission, and the American Society of le Souvenir Francais.
