It’s Time to Help Us “Stock the Pantry”
during our Food Assistance Drive!
Catholic Charities Stock the Pantry Drive is gearing up! We currently provide food for over 3,000 households each year. In a single month, we distribute over 10,000 pounds of food through our food pantries and cooperative programs.

Now through February, Catholic Charities locations will accept donations of nonperishable food, such as canned meats, soups, fruits, and vegetables; boxes of pasta, cereal, baking mixes; jars of peanut butter and jelly; coffee, tea, powdered milk. We also welcome donations of cleaning products, dish detergent, paper goods, and personal care items like shampoo and soap.
In addition to nonperishable food and grocery store gift cards, Catholic Charities also accepts monetary donations in order to purchase additional food to fill bags for the food distribution programs. Each distribution is valued at $50.

Now is a Good Time to Apply for Our Energy Assistance Program!
LIHEAP Applications Are Still Available
The Cold months are here! The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), administered in Delaware by Catholic Charities, continues to accept applications for the current heating season.

This federally-funded program assists low-income Delawareans with heating bills through direct payments to home energy suppliers. The LIHEAP benefit is based on a household's income, size, and type of fuel. In order to apply, you must call the Catholic Charities office closest to you and schedule an appointment. You must reapply each year for the benefit.

If you are eligible for LIHEAP, you also may qualify for other programs that require LIHEAP eligibility. For example, if your home is not as energy efficient as it could be, you may qualify for home weatherization improvements through the Delaware Weatherization Assistance Program, administered by Catholic Charities in Kent and Sussex Counties.

Catholic Charities Awarded Potter Trust Grant for
Homeless Prevention Services in Kent County
The Delaware Community Foundation has awarded $322,100 in Potter Trust Grants to Kent County nonprofit organizations providing services ranging from emergency food and shelter to medical care for low-income children. Catholic Charities is the recipient of a $35,000 grant to help increase homeless prevention in Kent County.

The grants were awarded from the Benjamin F. Potter Trust, which was created in 1843 and is one of the oldest continuing trusts of its type in the nation. The purpose of the Potter Trust is to aid the economically underprivileged in Kent County by supporting charitable organizations serving these individuals.

The CenDel Foundation, which brings expertise in needs in Kent County, serves as the grant recommendation committee. The Potter Trust grants target crisis/emergency assistance funding for basic needs, homelessness, hunger and health care. This year the committee also considered needs stemming from the COVID-19 crisis.
A Warm Welcome to Our Newest Staff Members
Lisa Schieffert
Director of Program Operations

Lisa has spent much of her life in non-profit leadership and community advocacy, most recently as Manager of Community Health and Well-Being at Saint Francis Healthcare. Her move to Catholic Charities as the Director of Program Operations is a natural next step.

When asked about her decision to become part of our team, she says, “It comes from a deep desire to honor the sacred in each person, especially the poor and vulnerable. I want to be part of building up a spirit of community at Catholic Charities.”

Lisa looks forward to getting to know the people of Catholic Charities, our programs, and to learning how she may be of assistance, focus, and support for the work to be done. Her connections in the Delaware nonprofit, healthcare and government circles will be an asset for our ministry.

Lisa lives in Middletown, Delaware with her husband and two daughters. She is also a stepmom to four grown children. A happy golden doodle dog rounds out the family circle. She is a member of St. Joseph’s parish and she has served as a parish religious education catechist and a Stephen Minister.
Aaron Prince
Bayard House, Program Manager

Aaron is the new Program Manager at Bayard House, coming to us from Northern Children’s Services, where he worked with programs for mothers and babies and providing transitional housing to those in need.

Aaron likes the structure and cohesive team of care which he sees at Bayard. He sees the compassionate spirit of our staff which seems “effortless and essential to quality care.”

Aaron looks forward to providing stability in leadership and taking a professional approach to the work to be done.
