The Four Poisons of the Heart

Maintaining a healthy heart requires continuous spiritual maintenance & commitment to righteous actions. If we are concerned about the health of our heart, we must rid it of the effects of 4 poisons and continues to protect it by avoiding new ones.

The following are the most widespread poisons that have the greatest effect on the heart’s well-being.

1. Superfluous “Unnecessary” Talking:

The Prophet saaw said:” The faith of the servant is not put right until his heart is put right, and his heart is not put right until his tongue is put right.” This shows that our Prophet saaw has made the purification of faith conditional on the purification of the heart, and the purification of the heart conditional on the purification of the tongue.

2. Unrestrained glances:

The Prophet saaw said:” The glance is a poisoned arrow of Shaytan. Whoever lowers his gaze for Allah swt, He (Allah swt) will bestow upon him a refreshing sweetness which he will find in his heart on the day that he meets Him,” Shaytan enters with the glance, so he travels with it. Staring and gazing without restraint is disobedience to Allah swt. Allah swt said: ” tell the believers men to lower their gaze and guard their modesty. That is more purifying for them. Surely Allah is aware of what they do.”

3. Over Eating:

The Prophet saaw said: “ The son of Adam fills no vessel more displeasing to Allah than his stomach…. If he must fill it , then he should allow a third for his food, a third for his drink, and leave a third empty for easy breathing.’

4. Bad Companionship:

Mixing with bad people is certainly bad for the soul. It can be one of the most distressing aspects of a servant’s life. Servants should associate themselves with righteous people. The Prophet saaw said: “ A man is upon the religion of his friend let one of you look at whom he befriends.”

May Allah swt purify our hearts and make us always steadfast on the right path.. Ameen

Harvard Model Congress 2022

For three days, 15 BHA students participated in the Harvard Model Congress Middle East Conference. HMC is a world-class government simulation where students take on the roles of U.S. Representatives, U.S. Senators and UN delegates and tackle world pressing issues. Led by Dr. Jolyn deMeritte, BHA students competed against students from 15 other countries. For most, this was their first time participating in this kind of activity. Our students challenged themselves to become better public speakers and negotiators. They learned the art of compromise and the intricacies involved in creating and passing bills and resolutions. Students were so excited when bills and resolutions they helped to write passed!
