A Weekly Newsletter from Pine Street Church
A Word from Andrew... In-Person Worship and On the PSC YouTube Channel... Light Without Sight...

Good morning, Friends,

Join us today at 10am MST in-person or online at the Pine Street Church YouTube Channel.

We will explore the story of Bartimaeus (Mark 10:46-52), someone who had been ostracized and cast aside, because he was blind. He answers a question that all of us can take the audacity and courage to answer today, too: "What do you want me to do for you?"

Bartimaeus wanted Jesus to restore his eyesight. And nothing would stop him from being honest and open about what he needed. There is indeed light without sight--and sometimes there is what we might call sight without light--needing our vision to be corrected, too, as we find out that grace often comes to us in the dark.

Please take time to look around this Pine Street Post for ways that you can connect with God and with one another. And be sure to share all of the Pine Street Church goodness by following us on Facebook and Instagram---and telling others about it!

With heart,
Andrew

WORLD MISSION OFFERING -
We’ve Been Surprised by God’s Glory

During the World Mission Offering this October, we have the opportunity to join the transformational work God is doing around the world through International Ministries’ 120+ global servants and 250+ global partners. God can use our participation not only to change lives internationally, but also to deepen our own discipleship in Christ. You can take part in what the Holy Spirit is doing to bring God’s kingdom “on earth as it is in heaven.”

Please prayerfully consider a generous gift to The World Mission Offering which will be collected throughout the month of October. You can give online HERE, being sure to select "World Mission Offering 2021" from the drop down tab, or you can give in person Sunday mornings by dropping an offering in our offering box using a WMO envelope found in the pew racks. Thank you to everyone who's already given! So far we've raised $836!

With gratitude for your generous support,
Your Heart for Missions Team
2021 Crop Walk!

The Boulder County Crop Walk is scheduled for October 24th and the PSC Heart for Missions team is urging our participation and support.  The Boulder County Crop Walk takes place every October as part of a nationwide effort to increase awareness and raise funds to alleviate hunger and poverty here in our community, the United Sates and internationally. Our financial contributions support Church World Service (CWS), an organization that aids not just hunger and poverty, but helps with displacement and disaster needs. Currently CWS is offering aid to victims of the earthquake in Haiti and supporting the re-location of afghan refugees. Locally, 24% of the funds raised go to Community Food Share.
Last year the Crop Walk had a more virtual platform, with small groups of people walking together on event day. Fund raising was still brisk and the Boulder County Crop Walk raised over $42,000.

This year the actual walk will be hosted at Heart of Longmont Church. We created a PSC Pine Heads team. Regardless of your physical participation, you can support the Pine Heads who will be walking and this very worthy cause.

Alternatives to Capitalism and Socialism

In the past two presentations we looked at the pros of cons of capitalism and socialism, primarily from a moral and creative perspective. During much of the 20th Century, these two economic systems seemed the only two alternatives. During this presentation, we will look at attempts to combine the best of both systems while mitigating the worst. We will briefly examine some attempts that reject much of both systems, and which seek an individually self-sustaining model, with little to no reliance on government or private industry.

This is a hybrid event (Remote via Zoom link and in-person). It will take place at the Off-Broadway Art Salon at Pine Street Church located at 1237 Pine Street; Boulder, CO.
Partners in Parenting Haiti (PIPH) Update

Dear Members & Friends of Pine Street Church,

Since I last wrote to you in October 2020, Jovenel Moise, the President of Haiti, was assassinated on July 7, and there was a 7.2 earthquake in Jeremie (where our program is located) on August 14 which was followed by a tropical storm. I will tell you about your child’s reaction to these shocking and devastating events but first I will quote from Nazaire, our country coordinator.

Assassination July 7, 2021

[It is my understanding that no one liked the President because of the crime and corruption he was associated with but to have him assassinated was shocking to the Haitian people] “It is a shame for Haiti as the first black republic that got its independence. Haitians should be an example for other countries that fight for freedom. It seems that we do not know what does that mean: killing a President in this 21 century. This touched me very deeply.”

Earthquake August 14, 2021 followed by tropical storm Grace

“Haiti is definitely one of the countries where facing problems are the most frequent. When it is not unrest, starvation, drought, or socio-political situation, it is about natural disasters. That makes Haitians people do not know what to do and also on whom to count. The parents of the kids are very thankful for your kind support in that sad time. According to their words, you are part of their family members and they bank on you. They will do all possible effort to make you happy by their behaviors, the results of the kids etc.”

"During the devastating earthquake she was inside of her house. Suddenly, Rose Darline (her sister, also sponsored by PIPH) called her to go out. She run barefoot and cried. Sadness came upon her by seeing kids younger than her laying down in the streets."

Christa is 17 and in the Thirteenth Grade which is the last year of high school. Christa received a 78 for her last grade in Twelfth Grade which is very good since most of the PIPH children received grades in the 60’s (passing). She was a participant from her school in Juge Genie which is a intelligence contest that several schools in the Jeremie participated in. Her school won the trophy; Christa was overjoyed. Her goal is to get a scholarship to continue her education after high school.

Sadly Christa continues to have medical problems on a consistent basis. She goes regularly to Cremed (the HMO that all of the PIPH children belong to) and has been treated for bellyaches, headaches, anemia, eye pain, and reoccurring breast pain.

She recently attended a training where she learned how to draw flowers. She is interested in activities that can help her to be a polyvalent. [not my word, it means someone with multiple competencies]

Thank you for your generosity in sponsoring this talented and complex young woman.
