PERCENTAGE OF SIMMENTAL REQUIRED FOR PUREBRED STATUS IN CANADA

Producers purchasing bulls from the United States or semen from American bulls should be aware of differences that exist between Canada and the United States in the percentage of Simmental required to qualify for purebred status.

In accordance with CSA by-laws which are approved by Agriculture and Agrifood Canada, the Canadian Simmental Association requires a male to be 15/16 Simmental to reach purebred status while the American Simmental Association accepts males who are 7/8 Simmental or less by Canadian standards as purebred. As is regulated by the Federal government through the Animal Pedigree Act, it is the responsibility of the purchaser to ensure that these bulls meet the requirement of being 15/16 Simmental if they wish to register that animal in the Canadian Simmental herd book as a purebred. Please see our website under CSA Bylaws for our Upgrade Table
BREED IMPROVEMENT
Foot and Leg Scoring

At the recent Breed Improvement Meetings in Calgary discussions involved collection of feet and leg scores. This is a tool available for breeders to collect information on feet and legs in their seedstock cattle. Data will be collected on claw set, hoof angle and rear leg set as these moderately heritable traits were found to be highly related to other foot and leg characteristics and strong determinates of longevity in the cow herd.

Video information on foot and leg scoring is available at the following link:

Management Groups

Management group information is collected in the performance system to help identify animals that have had the same opportunity to perform (same management). It is important when identifying management groups at birth, weaning or yearling to use numerical values (1, 2, 3, etc.). Cattle that are managed together should all receive the same group number. This applies to pre-calving management of cows for birth groups, pre-weaning management of pairs, and post-weaning management of calves prior to yearling or ultrasound.

UItrasound/DNA Program

The CSA board has approved an ultrasound/DNA rebate program that provides a credit of $27.50 per head for replacement heifers/yearling bulls that are carcass ultrasound scanned using approved UGC technology as part of a complete contemporary group and have a completed 100K DNA test.
A list of approved technicians is available here:

The program has a $100,000 budget and is available on a first come, first served basis. Cattle must be scanned and DNA tested to qualify for the rebate. Watch for more detailed information on the program.

Heifer DNA Program

CSA is pleased to continue the Heifer DNA project which rebates $10 on all parentage tests for first calve heifers enrolled in THE program.
