The Ascension of the Lord - Thursday, May 26th

In this homily for the Ascension of the Lord Year C, Bishop Robert Barron comments that the feast of the Ascension is meant to awaken hope. In Jesus, risen from the dead and ascended to the right hand of the Father, our lowly human nature participates in the very life of God. In the light of the Ascension, therefore, we are permitted to hope for a way of being, elevated and perfected beyond our imagining.

In the Archdiocese of Seattle, the Ascension is transferred to Sunday.
Prayers Following the Uvalde Elementary School Shooting

O God our Father, whose beloved Son took children into his arms and blessed them: Give us grace to entrust your beloved children of Uvalde to your everlasting care and love, and bring them fully into your heavenly kingdom. Pour out your grace and loving-kindness on all who grieve; surround them with your love; and restore their trust in your goodness. We lift up to you our weary, wounded souls and ask you to send your Holy Spirit to take away the anger and violence that infects our hearts, and make us instruments of your peace and children of the light. In the Name of Christ who is our hope, we pray. Amen.

Love in Christ,+David Reed
Bishop of West Texas

SYNOD RESULTS ARE IN!
The 76 parishioners who gathered for the synod listening sessions on March 27 and April 3 came up with some terrific ideas for our parish, archdiocese, and worldwide Church. Our synod team compiled and forwarded their input to the Archdiocese on May 6.
Click here for the document they sent.

Printed paper copies are at the doors of the church. Please read it and email any additional ideas to synod@stjohnsea.org or call the Parish Office at 206-782-2810. Our synod team will be meeting with parish leadership to assess ways to launch these ideas.

More information can be found on our Synod Web page.

St John Book Club
Pope John XXIII, born Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli was a sharecropper’s son who became pope in 1958 and convened Vatican II. In his different diplomatic roles for the Vatican, he took action to save the lives of thousands of Jews living under Nazi occupation. He was made a saint in 2014. Much has been written about him (and by him too), and for our next book, we will be reading the biography that most suits your tastes. Click here for some suggestions.
Date to be determined.
A Heartfelt Thank You

Once again, we’d like to thank everyone who answered the call for pasta sauce and canned vegetables. We are so blessed to have your continued support for whatever we may need to help our neighbors! It’s a great opportunity to involve our whole parish family and school in service to others.

We take the food you have donated from our pantry when we help our neighbors with rent, utilities and other needs. We count on your generous financial contributions as well to make this all happen. Quite often, we’re just someone to listen and let our neighbors know we care.

Remember: If you or someone you know needs our help, call 206-767-6449 weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. All contacts are strictly confidential and the call center then forwards the request to whichever parish is nearest to the caller.

Gratefully,

Laudato Si
in Action
Laudato Si Week
Each year, on the anniversary of the release of Pope Francis' Laudato Si encyclical, the global Catholic community celebrates Laudato Si Week. To start the week, Pope Francis prayed the Regina Caeli (prayer to Mary, Queen of Heaven) from his balcony, followed by this:

Today, Laudato Si’ Week begins, to listen ever more attentively to the cry of the Earth which urges us to act together in taking care of our common home. I thank the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, and the numerous organizations taking part in it, and I invite everyone to participate.

The Laudato Si Movement is hosting a number of virtual events to celebrate the week, which you can find here. Please consider joining one or more of the events, which include:
  • Faith-Consistent Investing—Living Laudato Si’ on Thursday
  • Laudato Si’ Movie presentation on Friday
  • Ecological spirituality/Laudato Si Festival from Assisi on Saturday
Can't make it to any of the scheduled events? Why not simply read (or re-read) Laudato Si, which you can find in its entirety here.

Working together, we can help take care of our common home. Paul Litwin

“Together We Can: Walk with Justice, Love with Mercy, and Walk Humbly with God”. This year we will focus on how we can walk humbly with God by following the steps of saints, and learning how to be the best version of ourselves for God.
May
In the month of May we dedicate it to Mary, the Mother of God. She always points us to her son Jesus. Our saint of the month is Blessed Chiara Luce Badano. She is a model of what it means to offer up suffering as a form of prayer to grow closer to Jesus.
Students will be like Blessed Chiara in learning how to resolve conflicts, set goals, and explore the Catholic Social Justice Teaching of Rights and Responsibilities.
