Easter Weekend

On this Maundy Thursday, I hope our newsletter finds you well and reflecting on the life and teachings of our Lord, Jesus Christ. This very evening, we have the opportunity to gather to mark his journey from the garden of his betrayal to the garden of his burial at our Service of Tenebrae at 6:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary. Then, join us for a homecoming of sorts as Katie Griffis comes to lead us in our Good Friday service at noon tomorrow.

Of course, soon Easter will be here and we have some updates to share with you about the schedule for the weekend. Due to the forecasted rain over the course of the weekend, we have had to pivot regarding our Easter Egg Hunt, Sunrise Service, and Butterfly release. I say pivot much on purpose; we as a staff have thought through how to maintain as much of this as possible without cancelling outright. I’m grateful to our staff for their creativity! Details about the changes are:

  • Egg Hunt: Children who attend Easter service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday will receive a kit, including eggs and other goodies, to do an Easter egg hunt at home. In this way, we will utilize all the eggs (some 5,000 of them!) that you generously put together. We will also donate 1,000 eggs to Daybreak for an adult egg hunt they do annually!
  • Sunrise Service: The only difference here will be location! We will meet in our sanctuary and follow the same order of worship, including music brought to us by Katie Trotter and Camilla Packroff and liturgical leadership from the interdenominational cohort as we return this service to its interdenominational roots: The Revs. Scott Dickison from First Baptist Church of Christ, Sara Pugh Montgomery from Centenary UMC, and Andrew Gordon from Christ Episcopal Church.
  • Butterfly Release: This will occur under the portico at 10:00 a.m., rather than in the courtyard. We will have orange juice and donuts for the kids! Then, they’ll head to Sunday School to learn the legend behind why we dye eggs at Easter!

All else will be as usual, including the flowering of the cross and the 11:00 a.m. worship service.

We will celebrate together, as Charles Wesley famously said, “love’s redeeming work is done…hail the resurrection, thou…Christ the Lord is Risen Today! Alleluia!” I’m very much looking forward to my first Easter with you here at Mulberry. Invite a friend (or several) to come join you here for all these great events. I look forward to seeing you soon!

Flowering of the Easter Cross

April 9 before Sunday School!

On Easter Sunday morning members of Mulberry are asked to bring flowers from their yards or gardens to place on the cross in Mulberry’s courtyard. The cross will be covered in greenery and chicken wire and flowers will be easily placed on the cross. Please bring flowers to the courtyard prior to Sunday school. This beautiful blooming cross will symbolize our risen Christ to all who pass by our church home after Easter.

Congrats to Spencer and Megan Smith upon the birth of their daughter, Sarah Ruth Smith!

World Upside Down: a Bible Study on Acts

Sundays from 5:30-7:00 pm at the church (room TBD),

Beginning April 16

In this class, led by Payton, we will explore the first half of Acts! We will discuss how the death and resurrection of Jesus ushers in a new way of life grounded in the work of the Holy Spirit; this work of the Spirit through God’s people (the Church) turns the “world upside down” (17:6) as the earliest Christians proclaimed that Jesus was King of Kings and lived out this truth together as the Church. We will examine the major events (Jesus’ Ascension, Pentecost, the Jerusalem Council), the major players (Peter, Paul, James, the Ethiopian Eunuch), and how their stories intersect ours today. We hope you’ll join us for this exciting study!

Enneagram Book Study

Missed the first round of Enneagram Book study, but want to learn more?

The Enneagram is a tool for spiritual, personal, and relational growth. Learn how God made us all in God's image and made us each unique at the same time.  We will read The Road Back to You: An Enneagram Journey of Self-Discovery by Ian Morgan Cron and Suzanne Stabile. Dana Goshorn will facilitate discussion. Please share your interest in this study by filling out this form. This group will begin to meet after Easter.
